The throne room was large and empty.

Black stone walls rose on every side. The ceiling was lost in darkness. Grey light came from the walls themselves. It pulsed slowly. It made the shadows move.

The King sat on his throne at the center of the room. He was tall and thin. His body was wrapped in grey cloth. His skin was grey and cracked. His eyes were pale and they glowed. He looked at Nathan and he did not blink.

"Welcome," he said again. His voice was soft and dry. "You are the first to reach my city in a very long time."

Nathan kept Moonlight raised. The party spread out behind him. Everyone had weapons ready. The summons were alert. No one spoke.

The King did not move. "You do not need your weapons. I will not harm you. Not yet."

"What are you?" Nathan asked.

"I am the King of Ashes." The King tilted his head. "Or what is left of him. What is left of all of us."

Smithy stepped forward. His Void Eel was coiled at his feet. "The records said the King locked himself in the Sunken City. That the world died around him."

"The records were written by those who did not understand." The King’s voice was quiet. "I did not lock myself away. I was buried. A bejng calling himself ’the Shepherd’ buried me here. Along with everyone else."

Nathan lowered Moonlight slightly. Not all the way. Just enough to show he was listening. "Tell us what happened."

The King was silent for a moment. Then he spoke.

"This world was bright once." He gestured. "The sky was blue. The sun was warm. My people built cities and farms and temples. We were happy. We did not know that anything else existed beyond our sky. We did not know about the Towers. We did not know about the Shepherd."

The grey light pulsed. The shadows moved.

"Then the sky broke. The sun went dark. The Towers came through the cracks. And the Shepherd followed. He did not attack us. He did not kill us. He simply... consumed. Our light. Our warmth. Our future. He took everything that made our world worth living in. And he left us with this." The King raised a hand. The grey light flickered. "Ashes. Endless ashes."

Nathan thought about the city above. The dead buildings. The grey creatures. The bones around the black tower. "The people above. The ones who attack us. What happened to them?"

"They are the ones who fled. The ones who tried to escape the consumption." The King lowered his hand. "The Shepherd does not kill quickly. He takes pieces. Names. Faces. Memories. Until nothing is left but hunger. The creatures you saw are what remains of my people. They have forgotten who they were. They only know that they are empty. And they want to fill themselves."

Dillon spoke. His voice was tight. "And you? Why are you different?"

The King looked at him. "I did not flee. I stayed. I held onto what I could. My name. My face. My memories. The Shepherd’s consumption was strongest here, but I refused to let go. I held onto my identity for centuries. And I waited."

"Waited for what?" Elise asked.

The King looked at her. His pale eyes were steady. "Then? I do not know anymore... but now? Maybe... for someone who could end it"

The party exchanged glances. Nathan felt something shift in the room. The grey light pulsed faster.

"The Clear Condition," Nathan said. "What is it? What do we need to do to clear this World?"

The King was quiet. Then he stood up from his throne. He was very tall. He looked down at the party with his pale glowing eyes.

"Ah, The ’Clear Condition’ is simple," he said. "You must decide."

"Decide what?"

"The fate of this world." The King spread his arms. "You can kill me. End the last remnant of my civilization. Destroy the Sunken City. The World will collapse. The Ashen Expanse will be cleared. And my people will finally be free."

He paused.

"Or you can help me. Restore what was lost. Bring back the light. But that would require a power you do not possess. And the Shepherd would never allow it."

Nathan stared at him. "Those are our options? Kill you or fail?"

"My World is dying," the King said. "It has been dying for centuries. My people are already dead. I am already dead. The only question is how long we continue to exist in this state." He looked at Nathan. "You came here looking for answers. The answer is that there is no happy ending. There is only an ending. And you must choose it."

Nathan felt the weight of the choice pressing down on him. This was what the Tower Worlds were. Not simple battles. Not simple victories. Choices that no one should have to make.

Mirko stepped forward. Her pink eyes were bright. "Master. This world has suffered long enough. The King is right. The only mercy we can give is an ending."

Kuro materialized beside Nathan. ’He is not lying. I can feel his exhaustion. He has been waiting for death for a very long time.’

Shiro pressed her fist to her chest. "The Young Lord must decide. But whatever he chooses, we will follow."

Nathan looked at Elise. She met his eyes. "The records said the Shepherd consumed this world. The King has been holding on out of duty, not hope. He wants to rest. We can give him that."

Nathan looked at Garrett. Garrett nodded slowly. "I don’t like it. But sometimes the kindest thing is to let go."

Dillon was quiet. Then he said, "I trust you, Cross. Whatever you decide."

Nathan turned back to the King. "If we kill you, the World collapses. Your people die. But they’re already dead. This is just... an ending."

"Yes," the King said. "It is."

Nathan drew a breath. "Then I choose mercy."

The King smiled. It was a sad smile. A tired smile. "Thank you."

He stepped down from his throne. He walked to the center of the room. The grey light pulsed faster. The shadows grew deeper.

"You must strike true," the King said. "My body is old. Fragile. A single blow to the heart will end it." He looked at Nathan. "You are the archer. You should be the one."

Nathan raised Moonlight. He nocked an arrow. The King stood still. His pale eyes were calm.

Nathan aimed for the heart.

The arrow flew.

---

The King of Ashes dissolved into pale grey light.

His body came apart slowly. Piece by piece. The grey cloth fell away. The light spread outward. It filled the throne room. It filled the Sunken City. It rose through the black tower. It spilled out into the dead city above.

The creatures stopped moving. They stood in the streets. They looked up at the sky. And for the first time in centuries, their black eyes saw something other than grey.

The sky was changing.

The grey light was fading. The sky was clearing. And in the distance, a faint blue appeared.

The Ashen Expanse was ending. Not with a bang. With a long, quiet sigh.

Nathan and his party stood in the center of the throne room. The light was all around them. Warm and soft. The King’s voice echoed one last time.

"Thank you. For the mercy. For the ending. May the light find you again."

The light faded. The Tower World dissolved. And Nathan Cross and his party returned to the real world. The portal behind them was gone.

They were standing in an empty field. The sky above was blue. The air was warm. The Ashen Expanse was over.

Nathan lowered Moonlight. He felt tired. He felt sad. But he also felt something else. Something that might have been peace.

"It’s done," he said quietly.

Mirko was beside him. "We gave them an ending. That is what they wanted."

Nathan nodded. "Let’s go home."

They walked toward the TCA camp in the distance. The blue sky stretched above them. The sun was warm on their faces. And Nathan thought about the King of Ashes. About the world that had died. About the mercy they had given.

Maybe not every victory was a battle. Maybe some victories were just endings.
