My Overpowered Bunny Girls

Chapter 178: Return after a fast clear

The field outside the portal was crowded.

Nathan stood with his party, blinking in the sudden brightness. The sky above was blue. Real blue. Not the pale grey of the Ashen Expanse. The sun was warm on his face. He could hear birds. He could hear wind. The world felt alive again.

Then he saw the other parties.

They were emerging from other portals scattered across the field. Silver Drake’s vanguard. Red Dragon’s strike team. Golden Hawk’s scouts. Goldcrest’s assault unit. The two independent parties. All of them were stepping out of their own exits, looking confused and disoriented.

Seraphine was the first to speak. She walked toward Nathan, her silver armor gleaming. "Cross. What happened? We were inside for hours. Then the World just... ended. The sky turned blue and the portal spat us out."

Hours. Nathan felt a chill. He looked at the sun. It had been morning when they entered the Ashen Expanse. Now it was late afternoon.

"Time moved differently inside," Elise said quietly. "We were inside for what felt like a day. Maybe two. But it’s been longer out here."

"How much longer?" Garrett asked.

Helena was running toward them from the TCA camp. Her Thunderbird was flying overhead, crackling with energy. "You’re out. We thought we’d lost you."

"How long?" Nathan asked.

Helena stopped. Her expression was grim. "A week. You’ve been inside for a week."

The party exchanged glances. A week. They had felt maybe two days pass. The Ashen Expanse had warped time around them.

Then Torren spoke. His voice was loud and confused. "Wait. The World was cleared? Already? We were just getting our bearings. We hadn’t even reached the center."

"The World is gone," Seraphine said. She pointed at the field behind them. Nathan turned. The portals were gone. The black towers that had marked the Ashen Expanse’s entrances had dissolved. There was nothing left but empty grass and the distant shapes of the TCA camp.

Derek Stone walked over. He looked tired. "The Tower dissipated. The it’s over."

"But how?" Torren demanded. "Master Class Towers aren’t cleared this fast. They’re supposed to take weeks. Months. The last expedition disappeared in there for twenty years. How did you clear it in a week?"

Everyone was looking at Nathan now. The other parties. The TCA staff. The guild representatives. All of them were staring at him like he had done something impossible.

Nathan felt the weight of their attention. He did not have an answer. "I don’t know," he said honestly. "The World was old. It has a King and he was waiting for someone to end it. We just... did what he asked."

"What do you mean ’what he asked’?" Seraphine frowned.

"The Clear Condition wasn’t a battle," Elise said. "It was a choice. The King of Ashes offered us a way to end the World peacefully. We took it."

"That’s not how Tower Worlds work," Torren said. "They’re supposed to be challenges. Battles. Tests. You don’t just ’choose’ to clear them."

Nathan looked at the empty field. The Ashen Expanse had been a test. But maybe not the kind any of them had expected. Maybe the real test was knowing when to fight and when to show mercy. Maybe that was the point.

"Maybe they work differently than we thought," Nathan said quietly.

The other parties were still confused. They exchanged glances. Murmurs spread through the crowd. Nathan could hear fragments of conversation: "Cleared in a week." "Impossible." "How did he know what to do?"

Nathan did not know how he had known. He had just followed the path. The spiral on the tower floor. The King’s words. The choice that had felt both impossible and inevitable. He had done what felt right. And the World had ended.

Helena put her hand on Nathan’s shoulder. "We can talk about it later. Right now, you need to rest. All of you. A week inside a Master Class Tower World is a long time, even if it didn’t feel like it."

Nathan nodded. "Let’s get back to camp."

---

The TCA camp was noisy and busy. Climbers moved between tents. Officials talked into communication crystals. The news of the Ashen Expanse’s clear was spreading fast. Nathan heard the same word repeated over and over: "Fast." "Impossible." "Unprecedented."

Nathan and his party found a quiet spot near the edge of the camp. They sat on supply crates. They drank water. They ate. The exhaustion was catching up with them. Nathan felt it in his bones. The Ashen Expanse had taken something from him. Not physically. But something deeper.

Dillon broke the silence. "It really was too easy, wasn’t it? We walked into the Tower World. We found the city. We found the library. We found the black tower. We found the King. We made a choice. And it was over. No big boss fight. No army of monsters. Just... a dying king and a choice."

"The Tower Worlds are not like regular Towers," Smithy said. He was sitting apart from the others, his Void Eel coiled at his feet. "They are not designed to be conquered. They are designed to be experienced. To be understood. The Ashen Expanse was a world that had already ended. The only challenge was figuring out how to let it rest."

"But other parties have been trying to clear these Worlds for years," Garrett said. "Decades. They all failed. Or died. Why did we succeed so easily?"

Smithy was quiet for a moment. Then he said, "Maybe it wasn’t easy. Maybe you were just the right people at the right time."

Nathan looked at his party. His friends. His summons. They had walked through a dead world together. They had listened to a dying king. They had made a choice that no one else could have made. Maybe that was the point. Maybe the Ashen Expanse had been waiting for them specifically.

He thought about the Shepherd’s words in the flower field. "You are merely one of many, little rabbit king."

Nathan did not understand all of it yet. But he felt something starting to form in his mind. A pattern. A connection. The Tower Worlds were not random. They were pieces of something bigger. And Nathan’s party was being pushed toward the center of it.

Elise sat down beside him. She did not say anything. She just sat. Their shoulders were almost touching.

"You’re thinking about the Shepherd," she said quietly.

"Yes."

"Do you think he knew? About the King? About the choice?"

"I think he knows everything about the Tower Worlds. He made them. Or helped make them. They’re his game."

Elise was quiet. Then she said, "Then we’re playing his game. But we’re not playing by his rules."

Nathan looked at her. She was looking at the sky. The blue sky. The real sky. "Maybe that’s why we cleared it so fast. We didn’t try to fight. We didn’t try to conquer. We just listened. Maybe that’s what the Tower Worlds actually want."

Elise turned to him. Her eyes were soft. "And maybe that’s why the Shepherd can’t clear them himself. He doesn’t know how to listen."

Nathan felt something shift between them. Something warm and quiet. He did not have words for it. But he did not need words.

Garrett stood up and stretched. "We should check our notifications. The clear should have given us rewards."

Nathan pulled up his interface. The notifications were there. A stream of them.

[Ding! Ashen Expanse — Cleared!]

[Overall Clear Rank: S]

[Level Up! Nathan Cross: Level 66]

[Level Up! Mirko: Level 54]

[Level Up! Kuro: Level 42]

[Level Up! Shiro: Level 25]

[Level Up! Garrett Voss: Level 50]

[Level Up! Elise Winterhart: Level 53]

[Level Up! Dillon Briggs: Level 48]

[Reward: Ashen Remnant (Legendary Material) — A fragment of the Ashen Expanse’s dying light. Contains residual power from the world’s final moments.]

[Reward: King’s Mercy (Unique Title) — Awarded for clearing a Tower World through non-violent means. Slightly increases persuasion and empathy with Tower World inhabitants.]

[Reward: Tower World Map Fragment — A piece of a larger map. Depicts connections between Tower Worlds.]

Nathan stared at the rewards. The title. The map fragment. The Ashen Remnant. These were not ordinary Tower rewards. These were things that would help them understand the Tower Worlds. Understand the Shepherd. Understand the game they were playing.

The other party members were checking their own notifications. Their own rewards. Nathan looked at them and felt something like hope.

They had cleared their first Master Class Tower World. They had done it together. And they had done it the right way.

Dillon laughed. "I got a reward called ’Ashwalker’s Boots.’ Apparently they let me walk on unstable terrain without sinking. Which is... actually useful."

Garrett was grinning. "I got ’Bulwark’s Gauntlets.’ They boost my defensive skill. Nice."

Elise was smiling. Just a little. "I received a book. ’The Last Lightbearer’s Journal.’ It’s a story about a priestess who kept the light alive at the end of the world. It’s... beautiful."

Nathan looked at the sky. The blue sky. The real sky. They were out of the Ashen Expanse. They were alive. They were together.

And they had learned something important. The Tower Worlds were not just challenges. They were stories. Stories of worlds that had ended. Stories of people who had suffered. Stories that needed to be heard.

Nathan Cross and his party were listening.
