The path to the true throne was open.
Seraphina stepped out of the carriage her violet eyes locked onto the towering obsidian doors of the main keep.
Leon followed closely behind her keeping a watchful eye on the dark corners of the courtyard.
The real game was finally beginning.
-----
The obsidian doors of the inner keep swung open with a heavy grinding groan.
The air pouring out from the throne room was freezing and smelled strongly of ozone mixed with rotting flowers.
Leon stepped over the threshold keeping his senses dialed to their maximum limit.
The grand hall was incredibly vast easily capable of housing a small army. Massive pillars of dark polished stone stretched up into a vaulted ceiling lost in the gloom.
There were no windows. The only light came from flickering blue magical torches mounted along the walls.
Seraphina walked beside him her hand resting instinctively on the hilt of her blade.
Her new crimson aura pushed back against the oppressive atmosphere creating a small pocket of breathable air around them.
The silence in the room was deafening. There were no courtiers whispering secrets or noble diplomats waiting for an audience.
The political heart of the empire was completely empty save for the towering structure at the very end of the hall.
The Imperial Throne was carved from a single colossal piece of jagged meteor iron.
Sitting upon it was a frail withered figure draped in heavy golden robes that looked three sizes too large.
The Emperor of the Solarian Empire did not look like a conquering warlord. He looked like a dying ancient ghost.
As they approached the dais a suffocating wave of chaotic magical pressure crashed down upon them.
It was a fragmented terrifying aura that felt like a dying star trying to explode.
It had enough raw volume to crush a normal human mind.
Seraphina grimaced slightly her boots dragging against the polished floor as she fought to maintain her posture under the immense weight.
Leon felt the pressure pushing against his kinetic barrier. He casually reached out and took Seraphina’s hand intertwining their fingers.
He silently fed a stream of his boundless vitality into her pathways grounding her against the chaotic storm.
She shot him a quick grateful glance squeezing his calloused hand tight.
They stopped at the base of the stairs leading up to the throne.
"House Sterling answers your summons your Imperial Majesty," Seraphina announced her voice echoing loudly in the cavernous empty hall.
The frail figure shifted.
The Emperor slowly lifted his head revealing a face mapped with deep hollow wrinkles and eyes that burned with a sickly glowing yellow light.
"The Silver Lioness," the Emperor rasped his voice sounding like dry leaves scraping across a stone floor. "And the feral shadow walking behind her. The ink is bleeding in the eastern winds."
Leon narrowed his eyes.
The Emperor was not speaking with the clarity of a sane ruler. The madness Julian Avgar had mentioned was clearly eating away at the old man’s mind.
"We came to report a massive treason your Majesty," Seraphina continued refusing to back down. "The Chamberlain is starving the capital and forging a royal decree to steal your power. The Eclipse Syndicate operates freely within your walls."
The Emperor let out a hollow rattling laugh that sent a chill down the spine.
He leaned forward gripping the armrests of his iron throne with skeletal fingers.
"The rat plays king in the pantry," the Emperor muttered staring past them into the dark corners of the hall. "But the green vipers are sleeping in the roots. The lotus blooms where the sun cannot reach. You look for decrees but you should look for the black ledger."
Leon processed the cryptic words rapidly. The Emperor was too far gone to issue a simple command or arrest the Chamberlain.
This was not a resolution. It was a messy complicated puzzle.
"Where is this black ledger?" Leon asked his deep voice cutting through the chaotic pressure.
The Emperor snapped his glowing yellow eyes toward Leon.
A sudden violent spike of dark mana flared from the throne testing Leon’s physical resolve.
Leon stood his ground entirely unfazed by the magical assault.
"Beneath the market of stolen sins," the Emperor whispered a strange manic grin stretching across his withered face. "Where the spy with purple smoke counts her secrets. Find the ledger. Cut the rot out. If you fail the shadow swallows us all."
The Emperor slumped backward against the iron throne his glowing eyes dimming rapidly.
The overwhelming magical pressure vanished in an instant leaving the grand hall feeling cold and dead. The old man fell into a deep unnatural slumber right in front of them.
Two Grey Robes materialized from the shadows near the dais. They did not attack. They simply gestured toward the massive obsidian doors indicating the audience was over.
Seraphina turned around her beautiful face tight with frustration.
She had expected a political victory. Instead they were handed a chaotic riddle from a dying madman.
"He cannot help us," Seraphina muttered as they walked back down the long empty hall. "The Chamberlain knows the Emperor is lost in his own mind. That is why the bureaucrats are moving so boldly."
"He gave us exactly what we needed," Leon corrected her keeping his voice low. "The Chamberlain’s forged decree is useless without the imperial seal. But if this black ledger contains proof of his Syndicate ties the neutral noble houses will string him up in the courtyard."
"And where do we find a mythical black ledger?" she asked glancing at him.
"Beneath the market of stolen sins," Leon quoted offering a dark confident smirk. "I know exactly who has it. We need to pay another visit to Lady Valeriana’s underground web."
The rabbit hole was opening wide beneath their feet and Leon was more than ready to drag the entire capital down into the dirt.
They just had to navigate the political landmines waiting outside the throne room first.
