The hired carriage rattled over the uneven paving stones of the eastern noble quadrant.
The atmosphere inside the wooden cabin was thick with heavy contemplation.
Seraphina leaned against the plush velvet seat staring blankly at the passing merchant stalls. The golden imperial scroll rested gently in her lap.
The reality of the Emperor’s fractured mind completely changed the landscape of their political war.
Leon sat opposite her watching the subtle shifts in her expression.
The capital was an intricate web of lies. The Chamberlain was playing a highly dangerous game by hiding the ruler’s madness from the Great Duchies.
"The Avgar family knew about the shadows in the walls," Leon stated quietly breaking the long silence. "Julian mentioned his father noticed the Emperor refusing food and talking to empty corners. The Chamberlain silenced them to protect his own forged authority."
Seraphina nodded slowly her violet eyes hardening with renewed determination. "If the neutral houses discover the throne is hollow the empire will instantly fracture into civil war. The Chamberlain is using the Syndicate to maintain order through pure terror. We need that ledger."
They arrived at the iron gates of the Sterling estate.
The heavy metal doors swung open revealing a courtyard that looked vastly different from the overgrown ruin they had first discovered.
Beatrice had worked her terrifying disciplinary magic. The marble pathways were scrubbed clean and the ancient stone fountains were actively flowing with crystal clear water.
The Vanguard knights stood at strict attention projecting a disciplined military front.
Leon stepped out of the carriage offering his hand to assist Seraphina.
She took it smoothly allowing him to guide her toward the main foyer.
The mouthwatering aroma of seared garlic and rich roasted meats drifted through the manor halls.
Elara had clearly spent the entire afternoon establishing her absolute dominance over the massive estate kitchens.
They walked into the grand dining room to find a massive feast spread across the long oak table.
A whole wild boar was roasted to perfection dripping with savory spiced glaze. Bowls of steaming root vegetables and thick cuts of fresh bread lined the polished wood.
Julian Avgar sat near the far end of the table.
The scrawny young noble was eating with the frantic desperate speed of a starved animal completely ignoring all standard highborn etiquette.
Elara stood near the doorway wearing her dark red chef’s coat. She carried a heavy silver platter loaded with roasted fowl.
Her dark eyes instantly locked onto Leon flashing with a warm possessive heat before she respectfully bowed to the noble daughter.
"Welcome back my lady," the fierce cook greeted setting the heavy platter down. "I prepared a restorative meal. Your magical pathways need raw fuel after yesterday’s breakthrough."
"Your timing is flawless Elara," Seraphina replied taking her seat at the head of the table. "We have a long dangerous night ahead of us. Everyone sit down. We are holding a war council."
Leon claimed the heavy wooden chair to her right. Beatrice materialized from the shadows carrying a thick leather tube filled with ancient architectural blueprints.
The pristine Ice Queen began unrolling the heavy parchment maps across the empty spaces on the table.
"I raided the estate’s historical archives while you were at the palace," Beatrice explained smoothing the curling edges of the maps. "The capital is built over centuries of forgotten ruins. The underground market operates within the old aqueduct system."
Julian swallowed a massive bite of roasted meat and grabbed a napkin.
The boy wiped his dirty face leaning forward to inspect the blueprints.
"My father mapped those lower levels," Julian interjected his voice trembling slightly under the intense gaze of the powerful women in the room. "House Avgar used the ancient smuggler routes to bypass the merchant guild checkpoints. There is a hidden entrance behind the weeping statues in the lower district."
Leon listened to the tactical exchange resting his chin on his knuckles. He analyzed the crumbling pathways marked on the old parchment.
Valeriana’s operation was deeply fortified. A frontal assault would alert the Syndicate and trigger a massive chaotic bloodbath.
A familiar digital chime echoed playfully in his skull.
[System Notice: The Tactician’s Reward]
[The freezing head maid is working tirelessly to map your path to victory. A true warlord ensures his loyal subordinates are well-fed during strategy meetings.]
[Objective: Pick up a slice of spiced roast with your bare fingers. Interrupt Beatrice’s presentation by sliding the meat directly into her mouth while Seraphina is looking at the blueprints.]
[Reward: +15 Strength, 450 Shameless Points.]
Leon did not even blink. He reached across the table completely ignoring the silver utensils.
His calloused fingers pinched a thick juicy slice of the spiced boar.
He leaned into Beatrice’s personal space just as she pointed toward a collapsed tunnel on the map.
"The Syndicate guards usually patrol this sector," Beatrice murmured her piercing blue eyes entirely focused on the parchment.
Leon smoothly pressed the warm spiced meat directly against her soft lips.
The Ice Queen gasped in pure shock her professional facade violently short-circuiting. She instinctively opened her mouth allowing him to feed her the savory cut.
Her pale cheeks instantly burned with a brilliant fiery flush as she chewed the tender meat.
Seraphina was deeply engrossed in tracing the smuggler routes with Julian. She completely missed the highly scandalous exchange happening mere inches away.
[Objective Complete. Distributing Rewards.]
A dense wave of raw physical power flooded his muscles. Leon casually wiped his fingers on a cloth napkin offering the flustered blonde maid a dark wicked smirk.
"Keep going Beatrice," Leon murmured softly. "The patrol routes are fascinating."
Elara watched the entire interaction from the opposite side of the table. The crimson-haired cook bit her lower lip fighting a desperate battle to hide her own jealous amusement.
Their magicless master loved living dangerously on the absolute edge of a blade.
"We cannot just walk through the front doors of the shadow market again," Seraphina decided tapping the map. "Lord Malakor survived your assault Leon. He is a Tier Two Grandmaster. He will have the main entrances heavily trapped."
"Then we take Julian’s smuggler route," Leon stated leaning back in his chair. "We breach the market from beneath. Valeriana has a private parlor where she conducts her high-level negotiations. We bypass the main floor and go straight to the spider’s web."
"The three of us will go," Seraphina commanded looking between Leon and the two loyal staff members. "Beatrice and Elara possess enough combat experience to handle Syndicate lackeys. Julian will remain here under the protection of the Vanguard."
The young noble nodded frantically deeply relieved he was not being dragged into a deadly underground warzone.
Leon looked around the table feeling a dark predatory thrill pump through his veins. He had assembled a highly lethal strike team of beautiful dangerous women.
The Chamberlain and his Syndicate dogs had no idea what was about to hit them.
