The teacher, a middle-aged man with slicked-back black hair and a thin beard, waited for all the students to show up.

Last time I’d seen him, he was teaching a class of 2nd year students, so I figured he only taught them. Wasn’t the case, apparently.

The red-haired woman I still had a score to settle with was there too. She’d entered the academy in the same batch as Selena and Brian.

She’d abandoned me, and even though she said Mike ordered her to do it, I just couldn’t let it go. She could have helped me, especially considering her ability was pretty decent, graded as a rank-A ability.

But that was something for me to deal with later. I already had a vampire problem coming my way, Ethan was suspicious, and the principal was up to something too. Everything around me sucked.

Once all the students were gathered in the middle of the gymnasium, the teacher introduced himself.

"Dorian Vael," he said. "I’m your combat teacher. During this class and future ones, I’ll teach you how to properly use your ability, control it, and take full advantage of it in combat."

"I’ll also be teaching you battle tactics, but that’s not something you’ll get right now."

I’d heard that surname before. This Dorian guy was from some rich family with a bunch of famous hunters. His name wasn’t unfamiliar either. I’d probably read about him online at some point.

He explained how the first class would run, and it wasn’t that different from the test I’d had with the principal.

"I’ll call you forward, and you’ll explain how your ability works. Then we’ll have a spar. Obviously I won’t attack, just defend, but I want to see how well you can control it."

Dorian started pointing at students one at a time, having them step to the center to explain their ability before trying to hit him.

Selena and Brian didn’t go, since they’d already had that class before.

"So why are you here with us, then? Don’t you have other classes to go to?" I asked Selena.

"Dorian wasn’t our teacher before. It changed, for some reason. People are saying the old teacher got sent on a mission or something. That’s why Dorian, who’s usually in charge of the 2nd years, is covering us too."

So that was the reason. Dorian was covering someone else’s class.

Anyway, I saw a few familiar faces, like the red-haired woman, showing off her lightning ability and getting all the praise. I could tell from her face she loved the attention.

"Impressive, Camille," Dorian said, praising her in front of everyone. "A powerful rank-A ability, and some say it has the potential to evolve into an S-rank one."

Camille. So that was her name, finally. I walked over to her once she was done getting praised.

Ethan and Tom frowned as I went. They had no idea I knew her.

"So what about that kiss you promised?" I whispered in her ear. "I didn’t forget."

Camille blushed. I wanted my revenge for what she’d done to me, sure, but I wasn’t about to waste a kiss from a beautiful woman like her.

"Shhh," she whispered back. "What if people hear this? And honestly, I thought you’d forgotten about it. How the fuck did you get a recommendation letter?"

She’d been avoiding me since yesterday. This was the first time we were actually talking.

"Why would I tell you? You left me to die."

"I couldn’t help you, I already told you that. Mike ordered me to, and I had to do it. If I hadn’t, he could’ve reported it to the academy. I really need this training. I really need to become a certified hunter."

Camille sounded honest. Were she and Ethan both telling me the truth, or were they just good liars? Either way, I’d have to figure it out and decide what to do about her.

Dorian noticed us talking. "Hey, you, Vince, right? Come forward, it’s your turn."

Honestly, I was surprised it had taken Dorian this long to call me. I figured he’d make me go first and try something. The guy was clearly still pissed about yesterday.

"Getting some tips from her?" Dorian joked. "She’s pure talent. You won’t reach her level of power."

The bastard was putting me down in front of everyone. Students were whispering, some even laughing. That blond guy was having the time of his life.

No way I was letting him talk shit to me. Sure, I had to respect my teachers, but not if they treated me like that.

"Maybe you should get some tips from her too," I said. "You’re not that skilled, or else you’d be out there exploring dungeons, not teaching a bunch of kids."

Everyone went silent. Dorian didn’t look nearly as pleased as he had a moment ago.

"Funny," he said. "How about I show you what a real hunter looks like?"

Dorian was changing plans. He wanted to actually attack me now, not just defend like he’d done with everyone else.

"A hunter who’s been training for what, a decade, wants to fight someone who started today? Wow. Real classy of you, teacher Dorian."

I could see he was getting even more pissed. Maybe saying that wasn’t my smartest move, but I wasn’t going to let the guy talk shit to me and do nothing about it.

Besides, with Bob on my side, getting way stronger than Dorian in the future wouldn’t be that hard.

Dorian cleared his throat. "You’re right. Attacking a new student with a rank-C ability wouldn’t be very classy of me. Honestly, a rank-C ability shouldn’t even be in this academy in the first place."

"You’re only here because we need new students, not because you deserve it. And I have no idea how you got that recommendation letter, but money doesn’t buy you shit in here."

Oh boy. Dorian was really pissed now. I’d managed to make the principal bleed when we fought, and he was definitely stronger than Dorian, so Dorian would regret saying that to me soon enough.

I would make him bleed in front of all the students, showing him that my ability wasn’t something he could make fun of...
