Make no mistake, I knew very well I was much weaker than Dorian. To become a teacher in such a prestigious academy, you had to be strong.
But he wasn’t among the best hunters. I’d probably rate him at rank A, at most. A hunter’s rank was different from the grade of their ability, though. I didn’t know which ability Dorian had.
A hunter with a rank-C ability could still reach rank B, or even rank A, depending on how well they used it, and of course, how high their attributes were.
If you could get your hands on a lot of monster crystals, it was possible to get powerful even without the best ability in the world.
There was a limit to it, though. Usually, people without a high-rank innate ability couldn’t endure the strain of absorbing too many monster crystals. Some could, since everyone was different, but most couldn’t.
That’s why there weren’t that many rank-S hunters in the world. They’d even had to create more tiers between A and S rank. There was A+, A++, A+++. The gap between a rank-A hunter and a rank-S one was massive.
Even among rank-S hunters, there was a gap.
Anyway, that’s what I’d read online, at least. Despite knowing all that, I couldn’t be sure of Dorian’s real power. He could be stronger than I thought.
Once I was standing in the middle of the room, with Dorian across from me, he spoke.
"Explain your ability to me," Dorian said.
I wasn’t going to explain all of it, obviously. Keeping a few secrets to myself. Being careful was never enough.
"I can summon a cube and control it with my mind," I said. "It can shift forms, so I can use it to attack and block."
Dorian smirked. "And which rank is it, again?"
The bastard already knew, but he wanted me to say it out loud for everyone to hear.
"A C-rank ability."
I heard a few laughs behind me. Most hunters had at least a B-rank ability, but they were now accepting new students with C-rank abilities too, for whatever reason. That was probably the real reason Dorian thought I got in.
The recommendation letter was part of it too, of course.
"Alright, get ready and attack me," Dorian said. "Show me how well you can control that cube of yours. I won’t use my ability."
Dorian didn’t think any of us could hurt him. He had high attributes, so even without using his ability, he was way stronger than any student there, thanks to the boost from monster crystals.
The principal had thought the same thing. And I’d made him bleed.
I decided to go all out from the start. Better than letting him read my movements and adjust.
"I’m attacking now," I said.
Dorian chuckled. To him, it was a joke, someone as weak as me announcing when I’d attack.
I transformed my cube into a dagger. Smaller objects were lighter, which made them faster. I sent the dagger flying toward Dorian.
Not at full speed, though. I slowed it down a bit. Dorian stood still, watching it approach. Since it wasn’t that fast, he looked confident he could dodge it.
But right as it got close, I switched it to full speed. Dorian’s expression shifted as the dagger closed in on his face almost instantly.
He still had the reflexes to jerk his head aside and dodge it. I wasn’t expecting that. The attack had been damn fast.
The dagger flew past him. Dorian was already turning to keep an eye on it, not wanting to lose track of where it was.
Before he’d fully turned, I did something else. I let a tiny portion of my cube drop to the ground, like a droplet of water. Hard to notice, especially mid-fight.
Dorian turned and didn’t seem to catch it. I couldn’t actually see through my cube, but it was like a connection, I could feel things and roughly sense where to move it. Like sonar.
The dagger curved back and flew toward Dorian again, still at max speed.
"It’s fast, but you won’t hit me, kid," Dorian said.
He started dodging side to side. I kept the dagger locked onto him, following wherever he moved.
I waited for the right moment, once he got close to where the droplet had landed. Right as he was almost on top of it, I made my move.
While the dagger was still closing in on him, I transformed the droplet into a needle and sent it flying straight into Dorian’s cheek.
He managed to dodge the dagger, but he didn’t notice the needle at all. By the time he did, it was too late.
The needle hit him in the cheek, and it drew blood. Strong enough to get through his defenses.
Dorian raised his right hand to his cheek, ran his fingers over it, and looked at the blood on his hand.
"No way, you actually hit me," Dorian said, turning to face me and the rest of the class.
I saw a shift in his attitude. Like he suddenly respected my skill.
"That was a good move," Dorian said. "All of you could learn something from Vince. He thought up a strategy mid-fight and caught me off guard. Very well done."
When I got back to where Ethan and Tom were standing, they both praised me. Tom already knew a few things about my ability, so he wasn’t as surprised. If anything, he was probably wondering why I hadn’t shown him the rest of it.
Ethan, though, looked genuinely impressed.
"That was pretty good," he said. "Makes sense how you surviv..."
I cut him off. "Don’t say that shit here, damn it."
Speaking of Ethan, I paid close attention when it was his turn to show off his ability. Turned out he could create illusions and mess with people’s minds.
Pretty cool ability. And just like me, he conveniently left out the part where his illusions could make him invisible.
The first class wrapped up once everyone had shown their abilities. Took a while, since there were a lot of new students.
The second class of the day, though, turned out to be... interesting. Not the kind of class anyone was expecting.
It just sort of happened out of nowhere.
