A massive amount of crystals. So much that I couldn’t store it all inside my pocket dimension, so I had to keep absorbing them throughout the week.

By the end of it, my stats jumped a lot. Based on what I’d read online about different hunters, I’d guess my attributes were getting close to a C-rank hunter’s, for sure.

Not that I could actually become a C-rank hunter. That required graduating from the academy first, along with meeting other requirements.

Without graduating, it was still possible to become a hunter, but the tests were usually harder. At this point, I was pretty sure I wasn’t sticking around for the full academic years.

While the other students got stronger at a much slower pace, since they didn’t have access to nearly as many monster crystals as I did, I was way ahead. Spending years in the academy would honestly be a waste of time.

Anyway, during that week, I kept waiting for the unknown energy to come after me. After 12 hours, it hit, then vanished the second I stepped into my pocket dimension.

As for the giant humans in that village, turned out they could absorb monster crystals too. That’s how they got stronger. But I never saw anyone use an actual ability, so maybe they just didn’t have any.

After that first week, I stopped taking all the crystals. They needed some too.

My arm had healed. I thought it’d take 2 weeks, but with the boost to my VIT, one week was enough.

Speaking of my attributes, they were looking pretty solid now.

[Name: Vincent Crane]

[STR: 109]

[AGI: 134]

[VIT: 96]

[WIL: 31]

Just 4 more points in VIT and all three main stats would be past the 100 mark. Fucking awesome.

WIL was climbing slower. I hadn’t found many of the right crystals for it, and since I wasn’t following any real training routine for my ability, it wasn’t growing "organically" either.

It wasn’t a massive jump considering how many crystals I’d absorbed, but the crystals weren’t high grade. The beasts attacking the village were pretty weak, weaker than what you’d find in F-rank rifts, even.

So either this Unstable Rift wasn’t as dangerous as I thought, at least in terms of beasts, or this particular valley just didn’t have any strong ones.

The rift looked massive, though, so there was probably more to it elsewhere.

During that time, I got closer to the villagers, picked up a few words of their language. I learned how to say hello, thank you, and one really important thing: the name of their language.

Took forever to get them to understand what I was even asking. Luckily, the man who’d sheltered me could actually read and write.

So he wrote the name down for me. Ithvani.

Never heard of it before. I kept the scroll from the man, Zuto, weird name too.

That was pretty much all I managed to learn from them. Couldn’t communicate well enough to find out if there were other villages, other kinds of people, what monsters to watch out for, none of it.

If I wanted answers, I had to go find them myself. So that’s what I did once I was fully healed.

The villagers were sad to see me go. That little boy came running up and hugged me.

The leader and I shook hands, a sign of respect. I could tell I’d always be welcome back there. Felt good. I’d definitely come back someday.

Then I summoned my cube and flew off, waving as I disappeared over the horizon.

From up there, I had a great view of the whole valley. I scanned for any sign of other villages, but saw nothing.

No smoke, no houses, no strange movement in the forest. Were they the only humans in the entire rift, or just in that region?

Also, how big was this rift, exactly?

Every rift had a different size, and the only way to know more was to explore, so that’s what I did.

I flew down the valley, taking in how beautiful the place was. Luckily, no flying beast came after me. I was still having nightmares about that fucking eye and its laser beams.

The valley stretched on forever, endless forest, gorgeous rivers and waterfalls. Something about the place made me feel oddly at home. Genuinely peaceful place to live, honestly.

Still, this was a dimensional rift, and I knew better than to get careless.

Something came flying at me out of nowhere. The clouds must’ve been hiding it.

A massive gecko with four wings on its back. Dark green, with big yellow eyes locked on me, full of killing intent.

Couldn’t tell exactly how strong it was, but now that my attributes were higher, I could sense its power, get a rough read on it.

This gecko was probably C-rank. The strongest creature I’d ever faced, not counting that eye.

I split my cube in two. One half stayed as the platform I was flying on, the other turned into a sword in my hand.

The gecko was fast, flapping toward me. I figured it’d try to bite me, but instead, once it got close, it opened its mouth and shot a stream of purple liquid at me.

Definitely poison. I didn’t want any part of that, so I steered the cube aside, barely dodging the shot.

The creature didn’t back off. Kept coming at me, mouth wide open, trying to swallow me whole.

I gripped the sword tight with my right hand and swung horizontally the second it got close enough.

Clean hit, right through its mouth. The sword sliced straight through. Sharp as hell. My cube wasn’t like any normal weapon.

Furious, the gecko went for another attack. Its claws. Didn’t see it coming, way too fast. The claws tore into my flesh, a nasty gash on my right arm, again. That arm had literally just healed.

The wound wasn’t even the worst part. I felt something moving through my bloodstream. Poison. Its claws were coated in the stuff too. Fuck.

I was pissed, ready to go after it and finish it off, but the gecko just flew away, bleeding from its mouth. Didn’t want to risk dying by sticking around.

It was so fast I wouldn’t have been able to chase it down anyway. Basically, it poisoned me and bailed. Fuck.

The creature was hurt, like me, but that wound wouldn’t kill it, but the poison in my body? I had no fucking clue.

I looked down at my arm. Didn’t look good. Needed to clean the wound. But how was I supposed to treat poison? Head back to the village?

Really didn’t want to rely on their help again. A good hunter had to figure out their own problems. Couldn’t keep leaning on other people forever.

I flew down and stopped by a river to wash out the wound, then tore off a piece of my hood to use as a bandage. They’d give me a new one anyway, no point keeping this one nice.

Right after I finished bandaging it, something pulsed through my arm. This poison was stronger than I thought. My vision blurred. I knew I was going to pass out soon, so I tried to enter in my pocket dimension, but it didn’t work.

To control my ability I had to use my mind, and the poison was making it impossible for me to concentrate.

I passed out, falling next to the river.
