To be honest?
Ashley had never truly believed she would kill Marshal.
She had made plans even before traveling back in time, but several factors had stopped her from carrying them out.
One of them was her arrest during her final mission for the Di Carpios. After that, she had promised herself that as long as Marshal didn’t force her back into the family, she would leave him alone.
Then, a year after she gained her independence, Scott appeared and handed her over to Dominion.
Still, she told herself that as long as she wasn’t dragged back into the Di Carpio household, she wouldn’t go after Marshal.
And she wasn’t.
So, her attention shifted toward escaping Dominion without shedding any blood.
In her previous life, Ashley could have forced her way out of Dominion. She could have even killed Lucian if she wanted to.
But she didn’t.
The more she thought about it, the more she realized that aside from Nikki, Ashley hadn’t killed anyone in her previous life—not until its very end.
In this life, however, she had realized one important thing.
She could not live as long as Marshal remained alive.
By the time they finally cornered Marshal and Scott, more members of Dominion had arrived and pulled over around them.
"Get them out!"
"Make sure they’re not armed!"
Gustav dragged Scott out of the car while Red hauled Marshal out. Meanwhile, Ashley stretched her aching limbs as she removed her black helmet.
"You all right?" Lucian asked, examining his wife from head to toe.
Ashley glanced at him and smirked.
"Thanks to you."
He smiled back, letting out a faint chuckle as he shook his head.
"That wasn’t fun at all," he said, referring to the entire chase—especially the moment Ashley had leaped off her motorcycle. "Don’t ever do that again."
"I won’t... maybe? But if I were forced to, I know you were there to catch me." She winked at him. "I knew you would."
Of course Lucian would.
Throughout that entire stunt, all he had been able to think about was the safety of his reckless wife.
If Gustav could hear Lucian’s thoughts, however, he would have stared at him in judgment.
Reckless wife?
Wasn’t Lucian just as reckless?
If Gustav hadn’t trusted him, he would never—never—have stayed inside the car for the entire chase. Jumping out of the speeding vehicle had seemed safer than remaining inside it.
"What the hell are you doing?!" Marshal screamed as Red pinned him against the trunk of the car.
Red tried to cuff him, but for some reason, the restraints wouldn’t fit around his wrists.
Marshal glared at Lucian and Ashley.
The couple snapped out of their brief exchange and turned toward him.
"He’s yours," Ashley told Lucian, keeping her eyes on Marshal. "For now."
"Red, it’s all right." Lucian waved him off. "Even without the cuffs, there isn’t much he can do."
Red rocked his head from side to side before stepping back with his hands raised.
"All yours, Boss’s... husband."
"Boss’s husband?" Lucian stopped and looked back at his wife.
"I’m his boss," Ashley replied playfully. "He’s not wrong."
She glanced at Red, who returned her knowing look before giving the couple some space.
As Red walked away, he saw Tank and Vodka pulling up in another car. He narrowed his eyes when he spotted Rum sprawled across the backseat, looking battered and disheveled.
"We told him to stay with the medics," Vodka explained as Red approached. "He refused."
Rum lowered the window. "I’m not missing the action this time."
"Not dead yet?" Red asked.
"Probably just a few broken bones." Vodka shrugged as he glanced at Rum. "Or maybe a little more than that."
Red walked up to the car, reached through the open window, and patted Rum’s shoulder.
"Good work, Rum."
"Heh," Rum smirked. "Can’t beat that, huh?"
"Nope." Red turned his back on him. "Not when she’s in the way."
It wasn’t a question of whether the others were capable of doing what Rum had done. It was whether they would ever be reckless enough to attempt it.
Red certainly wouldn’t—especially with Ashley directly in the truck’s path.
At this point, Ashley no longer needed to prove herself to any of them. She was capable—far more capable than they had ever imagined.
There was no question about that.
But Red would never take such a risk.
He doubted Khan, Tank, or anyone else in their faction would either.
Vodka and Tank glanced back at Rum, finally understanding why Ashley had specifically asked to speak with him during their flight.
With that, everyone turned their attention back to the situation. Several of their men were securing Scott, binding his hands tightly behind his back.
Marshal, meanwhile, stood before Ashley and Lucian.
"You’ve both lost your minds!" he screamed at the couple before focusing on Ashley. "You ungrateful bitch! How dare you do this after everything I’ve done for you?! You’re alive because of me, and this is how you repay me?"
Ashley walked toward him and stopped beside Lucian.
Without a moment’s hesitation, she raised her pistol and aimed it at Marshal.
"Tell him what he needs to know," she warned, ignoring Marshal’s attempt to provoke whatever guilt or conscience she might still possess.
She had none left for him.
"And I’ll make sure you don’t feel a thing."
Marshal sneered.
"I dare you," he hissed. "Go ahead. Shoot your own father—"
BANG!
Without blinking, Ashley shifted her aim and pulled the trigger. The bullet clipped the edge of his ear.
"Ahh!"
Marshal stumbled backward, his hand flying toward his bleeding ear. He landed hard on his backside and screamed in pain.
Still pinned to the ground, Scott silently watched the scene unfold. His eyes remained fixed on Ashley, who had fired without the slightest hesitation.
The longing and pain she had once carried were gone. So were the guilt and conscience she had deluded herself into believing she owed Marshal.
Everything that had once stopped her from raising a weapon against him had disappeared.
All that remained was... nothing.
Ashley marched toward Marshal, grabbed the front of his shirt, and planted her knee against his chest. She forced him flat onto the ground before pressing the hot muzzle of her pistol against his forehead.
She lowered her gaze, staring down at him without blinking.
"Dare me again, Marshal," she warned. "And I’ll get the job done for you... just like I always do."
Marshal choked.
For the first time in his life, he felt genuine fear toward her.
All the confidence he had gained from manipulating a little girl desperate for familial love—from conditioning her to seek his approval above everything else—shattered like glass.
All that remained was the human weapon he had created. Only now, none of its strings belonged to him.
"Now..." Ashley breathed heavily. "What do you know about Memphis?"
