"Oh, wow." Red’s mouth fell open slightly as he listened to Marshal’s confession. "He really did sing, huh?"
He glanced at the others, but they merely shrugged. Then, all of them turned toward Marshal.
The man was still slumped on the ground, staring up at the couple towering over him.
"I’m telling you the truth!" Marshal screamed, wincing as pain shot through his ear. "That’s all I know!"
Lucian narrowed his eyes before turning to his wife. "What do you think?"
Marshal’s information wasn’t particularly detailed, but that wasn’t surprising. Considering Memphis had secured a position in the High Chamber and prepared a decoy in case everything went south, Lucian doubted he would tell Marshal everything.
Lucian hadn’t expected him to. Still, he knew Marshal had to know at least a thing or two.
The only question was whether Marshal had told them everything he knew.
Ashley studied Marshal for a moment before nodding. "It seems he’s telling the truth."
"See?" Marshal laughed nervously. "Now you’ll let me go, right?"
"Huh?" Ashley blinked.
At the emotionless look on her face, Marshal’s heart nearly stopped before plummeting into his stomach. Scott, who was being restrained nearby, exhaled heavily.
"Please don’t kill him," he pleaded. The natural pride in his voice remained, but it was now tempered with humility. "You’ve already taken down the Di Carpios. He’ll never recover from this."
Marshal nodded profusely. "He’s right! How could I possibly recover from this? Everything is gone!"
He crawled forward on his knees and clung to Ashley’s leg.
"Daughter, I know I wasn’t the perfect father," he said. "But you understand that I only did what was best for you, hmm? You wouldn’t have become this remarkable if it weren’t for me!"
Everyone in the madam’s faction snorted, staring at him with ridicule.
The fact that he had sent a young Ashley to a base ruled by perverted men was already enough to prove that nothing he had done was for her own good.
"I’m going to break his teeth," Tank breathed, his eyes glinting dangerously.
His colleagues only knew about the base, but Tank had an idea of how she had been conditioned. He had been there in the church and overheard the conversation between Ashley and the priest.
"Ashley, my daughter." Marshal forced a desperate smile. "You understand me, don’t you? I only wanted you to learn the ins and outs of the family business because I always knew you would become my heir."
Ashley let out a light chuckle before glancing at Scott.
"I’ll think about it," she said, shifting her attention back to Marshal. "But first, tell me—what kind of leash do you have on that guy?"
She jerked a thumb over her shoulder, referring to Scott.
Marshal’s gaze shifted toward Scott before returning to her. Then, he shook his head.
"Nothing."
"Come on!" Rum shouted from the car. "Just tell us! I’m dying to know!"
To be honest, Ashley was dying to know as well. Lucian couldn’t deny that he was curious. In fact, everyone present was equally intrigued.
It was the kind of mystery that had lived rent-free in their heads for far too long.
Scott lowered his head, his jaw tightening.
"You don’t want to tell me?" Ashley asked, tilting her head. "Fine, then—"
The moment she moved the pistol in her hand, Marshal grabbed her leg.
"I’ll tell you!" he cried in panic. "I’ll tell you. Just—just put that down."
"It’s... it’s..." Marshal cleared his throat, his gaze darting between Ashley and Scott. "It’s family."
Well, that was anticlimactic, Ashley thought.
Or rather, everyone thought.
They had assumed Marshal had something on Scott, but that answer explained nothing. With Scott’s skills, he could have easily forced Marshal to give up whatever information he had. He could have even saved his family if Marshal had threatened to put a hit on them.
Lucian turned away.
"We’re almost done here." He jerked his chin toward Gustav. "Prepare to leave."
At his command, the people around them began moving.
Marshal looked up at Ashley, desperately searching her face for anything that might reassure him.
"I already told you everything," he said, rubbing his hands together. "Please spare me."
Ashley nodded and smiled. Then, she raised her pistol and pointed it at his forehead.
"But as you said, you trained me to be this way," she reminded him, echoing his own words. "And mercy isn’t something I learned from being a Di Carpio. If anything, I learned the opposite."
Her smile widened slightly. "You understand, don’t you? I’m only doing what’s best for both of us."
Marshal’s complexion paled, his reflection crystal clear in her eyes.
She was going to kill him.
There was no doubt about it.
The corners of her mouth curled upward as her eyelids drooped dangerously.
"Goodbye, Marshal."
"No—"
BANG!
The entire area came to a standstill at the deafening gunshot. Everyone froze before turning toward the source of the sound.
Marshal kept his eyes squeezed shut, his entire body trembling. Warm liquid seeped through his trousers as he pissed himself.
When he realized he was still alive, his brows furrowed. Slowly, he looked up.
Ashley and the others were staring in the same direction, their guns raised once more.
"What the hell...?" Red took a step forward but paused when a figure emerged from the darkness between two shipping containers.
"Don’t move! Please, don’t shoot!"
Lucian and Ashley narrowed their eyes as the man cautiously stepped out of the shadows. The moment they recognized him, their brows knitted together.
Raka.
"Please..." Raka held his hands above his head, taking one careful step after another. "Please, don’t—huh?"
His already wide eyes widened further when he spotted two familiar faces. His gaze darted between Ashley and Lucian, the gun in her hand, and the armed men surrounding them.
"What the hell are you two doing here?" Raka blurted out, only to stiffen when the gun behind him pressed harder against his head. "Please! I don’t know what this is, but I’m innocent!"
Ashley and Lucian’s expressions darkened as they stared at him.
A second later, another figure emerged from the shadows behind Raka, holding him at gunpoint.
It was someone no one had expected to see.
Carmella.
"Let him go!" Carmella screamed, her eyes burning with hatred as she glared at Ashley. "You little bitch! After everything we’ve done for you, this is how you repay us? You ungrateful mutt. I should’ve killed you back then!"
She hissed and pressed the pistol harder against the back of Raka’s head. He whimpered but could only stand still, caught between the gun behind him and the countless weapons aimed in their direction.
"Let my husband go," Carmella breathed. "Or I’ll shoot him."
