My Sniper System in a Zombie Apocalypse World
Chapter 198: The Infected RainChapter 198: Chapter 198: The Infected Rain
Jaxon suddenly tossed the shotgun toward Bong-gu. "You saw what it can do, right? Keep firing and clear the road for us."
Bong-gu caught it against his chest, momentarily stunned. He looked down at the weapon, then at the horde rushing toward them. A grin slowly spread across his face. "Leave it to me."
"Don’t get too excited," Jaxon warned. "Just keep the road clear."
"Got it!" Bong-gu braced himself against the back of the Hilux and raised the shotgun as another wave of infected rushed toward them.
Jaxon turned his attention toward the buildings surrounding the street. "Natasha, Na-rin, take out anything trying to climb toward us."
"On it!" Natasha replied. She braced herself against the frame and fired at a Grasshopper Infected crawling along the wall. THUP! Its head snapped back before it could leap.
Na-rin immediately fired at another one approaching from the opposite side. THUP! The creature dropped from the building and crashed onto the street.
Elaine and Isabel joined in from the other windows, firing whenever they spotted movement above. From the military truck behind them, Elena fired through the window while Cindy, Claire and Hae-in kept watch over their rear.
Gunfire echoed through the streets as both vehicles pushed forward.
A shadow suddenly appeared overhead.
"Above!" Isabel shouted as a crawler launched itself from a rooftop toward the Hilux.
Jaxon raised his DMR.
THUP! Its head exploded midair before the body crashed onto an abandoned vehicle.
He immediately shifted his aim.
THUP! THUP! Two more Grasshopper Infected dropped from the rooftops, but more were already crawling over the surrounding buildings.
"Damn it, how many of these things are there?!" Elena shouted as another one appeared over the edge of a building.
Haris gripped the steering wheel so tightly that his knuckles turned white. His eyes darted between the road ahead and the infected closing in from both sides.
"Come on... come on..." he muttered, pressing harder on the accelerator. "Just let us get out of here."
The Hilux tore through the dark streets, with the military truck following close behind. Bong-gu continued blasting away anything that blocked their path while the others kept the infected from reaching the vehicles.
.....
Not far from them, the colossal infected continued its slow advance, each heavy step sending tremors through the streets. Thick, black fluid dripped from its body and spread across the buildings and pavement, coating everything behind it until the entire area looked like some grotesque hive.
Its featureless head remained fixed on the evacuation area ahead.
"Target acquired!" a soldier shouted from the rooftop, where an officer and several groups of soldiers had taken position. They hadn’t given up on stopping the creature yet. At the very least, they needed to slow it down and buy more time for the evacuation.
"Fire all launchers!"
BOOM! BOOM! BOOM! Multiple grenades slammed into the creature’s chest and head, erupting into a chain of explosions. Smoke and chunks of flesh filled the air as the soldiers watched anxiously.
"Did we get it?"
The smoke slowly cleared and two grotesque eyes formed from the writhing flesh on its head and turned toward them.
"...No effect."
The officer’s expression darkened, but he quickly raised his hand. "Continue firing! It still can’t reach us from here, so we’ll slow it down as much as we can."
Before the soldiers could fire again, the colossal infected suddenly raised both arms.
"Hold formation!"
GRUAAAAAAH! Its roar echoed through the streets. Suddenly, infected came rushing toward it from all directions, climbing onto its massive body as if responding to its call.
Then the creature’s arms swung violently.
WHOOSH! Hundreds of infected that had climbed onto its massive body were suddenly flung into the sky. At the same time, the grotesque infected fused directly into its flesh were ripped free and launched alongside them, their twisted bodies becoming additional projectiles.
The entire mass of infected soared through the air before raining down across the streets and rooftops.
"INCOMING FROM ABOVE!"
"Take cover!"
The soldiers scattered as infected crashed into vehicles, rooftops, and buildings, tearing through their formation. Some were thrown straight into the defensive positions, while others landed among the soldiers and immediately began attacking.
"Fuck! It can do that?!"
"Forget the formation! Retreat!"
The officer barely managed to regain his footing before another roar shook the area.
The colossal infected remained in place and instead of continuing forward, it swung its massive arms again.
WHOOSH! Another wave of infected was launched into the sky.
The soldiers stared in disbelief as hundreds more bodies flew overhead before crashing down across the safe zone.
"It’s deliberately spreading them..." the officer muttered.
The creature remained in place, repeatedly launching infected in every direction as if it were spreading its own army across the safe zone.
WHOOSH! Hundreds more rained down from above, crashing into streets, buildings, and defensive positions. With every wave, another part of the safe zone was swallowed by the chaos.
Eventually, the infected reached the northern evacuation area. Bodies began raining down around the civilians and retreating soldiers, sending the already-panicked crowd into complete chaos. Jaxon’s group, still racing toward the northern gate, was caught right in the middle of it.
"Watch out above!" Elena shouted, firing through the window.
"What the hell?!" Thomas yelled.
BOOM! An infected slammed into the hood of the truck, denting the metal and nearly blocking his view. Another crashed onto the roof, making the entire vehicle shake.
"Shit! Keep driving!" Jaxon shouted as several more bodies crashed around the Hilux.
THUP! THUP! Natasha kept firing from the open back, picking off the infected as they came flying toward them.
Bong-gu crouched in the open bed of the Hilux beside Natasha, clutching the shotgun tightly. "Jaxon, I really want to get inside!"
"Keep shooting!" Jaxon shouted back. "This thing can tear through them even when they’re flying at you!"
Suddenly, an infected came crashing into the side of the Hilux.
CRASH! The window shattered from the impact, leaving a deep dent in the metal door. Sumiko screamed and instinctively grabbed Isabel’s arm, while Isabel immediately raised her M16 and fired, dropping the infected before it could recover.
"It’s okay!" Isabel pulled Sumiko closer. "Stay down!"
"Haris, turn left!" Elaine shouted.
Haris yanked the steering wheel. The Hilux swerved violently as another infected smashed into the road ahead, its tires screeching as they narrowly avoided the body.
But the infected that had landed around them weren’t staying down. One after another, they crawled back to their feet and immediately began chasing after the vehicles.
"Bong-gu, Natasha, cover the Hilux!" Jaxon ordered.
"What about you?" Bong-gu shouted.
Jaxon didn’t answer. Instead, he stepped toward the back of the Hilux, took a few quick steps, and jumped.
His feet landed firmly on the roof of the military truck.
"Jaxon!" Thomas shouted in surprise.
Jaxon steadied himself and raised his DMR just as another infected came flying toward them from above.
THUP! The bullet struck it in midair, sending its body tumbling away from the truck.
"Shouldn’t we take cover inside a building?" Thomas shouted.
"No!" Jaxon called back. "Keep moving! They won’t stop coming until we’re out of here!"
Thomas gritted his teeth and pressed harder on the accelerator.
The two vehicles raced through the streets while infected continued raining down around them, and those that survived quickly climbed back to their feet and gave chase.
Jaxon remained on the roof of the military truck, calmly shooting down anything that threatened to land on them.
Then Bong-gu suddenly pointed ahead, his voice filled with excitement. "I see it! The gate!"
Far ahead, the massive northern gate finally came into view.
"We’re almost there!" Haris shouted.
As they moved farther away from the colossal infected, the number of bodies falling from the sky gradually decreased. Jaxon’s rifle continued to crack through the chaos, picking off the remaining infected chasing after them.
Finally, the last one collapsed onto the road as the two vehicles reached the area near the northern gate.
"Stop here!" Jaxon ordered. "Take cover!"
Haris and Thomas immediately steered both vehicles behind a large reinforced building and brought them to a stop.
