Chapter 199: Chapter 199: The Last Exit

"That was the craziest night I’ve ever had," Bong-gu muttered between heavy breaths as he leaned against the side of the Hilux. "I swear, I almost died like ten times."

"When is this going to end?" Sumiko asked, still clinging tightly to Isabel. Her voice trembled as she looked toward the distant streets.

"Shh... it’s okay. We’re safe for now," Isabel reassured her, wrapping an arm around her shoulders.

The others slowly gathered around the vehicles, taking whatever chance they could to catch their breath. Their clothes were stained with blood, their weapons were nearly hot from constant firing, and several of them were still trembling from the adrenaline.

Jaxon wasn’t much different. Even with his enhanced physical abilities, exhaustion was beginning to settle into his body. He jumped down from the roof of the military truck and looked over everyone. "Everyone alright?"

Hae-in, Jannah, Hiromi, and Claire gave tired nods. They looked exhausted, but at least they were unharmed.

Seeing that everyone was safe, Jaxon opened his Storage Space and pulled out several bags of snacks, chocolates, chips, bread, and other food as he handed them around. "Eat something. It’ll help."

The sudden appearance of the food caught everyone’s attention, but after everything they had just been through, nobody had the energy to question where it came from.

Bong-gu immediately grabbed a bag of chips and looked at it with a grin. "Woah, you even have these? Perfect."

A few of the others managed weak smiles as they began eating

Jaxon, meanwhile, pulled several containers of fuel from his Storage Space and began refilling both vehicles. As he worked, his eyes moved over the damaged Hilux. The frame was badly bent, several parts of the body were covered in deep dents, and the vehicle looked like it was being held together by sheer luck.

Thomas noticed his expression and sighed. "I was supposed to have it reinforced before this happened."

Jaxon shook his head. "Don’t worry about it."

Claire glanced toward the inner part of the safe zone. Even from their position, they could still hear distant gunfire and explosions echoing through the streets. "So what now? Are we waiting for the evacuation convoy?"

Jaxon nodded. "That’s the plan for now."

He finished refueling the Hilux before looking toward Natasha. "Where do you think they’ll head after they leave this place?"

"Another safe zone, most likely," Natasha replied.

"The nearest major safe zone is Asterra," Na-rin added. "If the military is evacuating the civilians, that’s probably where they’ll send most of them. But it’s still a long way from here."

Thomas looked at the damaged vehicles. "Then waiting for the evacuation group might be our best option. Traveling alone through all that would be suicide."

Jaxon nodded, then a distant rumble reached his ears. "Stay alert. Wait here for me."

Natasha and Na-rin tightened their grips on their weapons. They knew Jaxon’s senses had picked up something.

Jaxon started sprinting toward the nearest building. He grabbed onto the broken windows and ledges along the wall, quickly climbing his way up until he reached the rooftop. Once there, he pulled a pair of binoculars from his Storage Space and turned toward the northern evacuation route.

"Where are they...?" He scanned the streets below, moving the binoculars from one road to another. Then he finally spotted movement in the distance.

"There." His eyes narrowed as he focused on the approaching convoy.

Dozens of buses and armored vehicles were racing through the streets as they pushed toward the northern gate. Soldiers surrounded the convoy, with some riding on top of the vehicles while others fired backward at the hundreds of infected chasing them.

’They’re barely holding them back.’

He lowered the binoculars for a moment before looking farther behind the convoy. ’Where are the other soldiers? Haven’t they reached them yet?’

Jaxon quickly climbed down from the building and returned to the group. "Prepare to move. The evacuation convoy is coming, but there’s a horde chasing them."

Hae-in’s face tightened with worry. "Isn’t that bad if we leave right after them?"

"We won’t follow directly behind them," Jaxon replied. "We’ll move ahead of the convoy and keep our distance."

He looked toward the massive northern gate. "I’ll open it first. Get the engines running and be ready to move the moment I give the signal."

Thomas immediately climbed into the driver’s seat of the military truck while Haris jumped into the Hilux and started the engine. Natasha and Bong-gu moved into position in the back, while the others quickly grabbed their weapons and prepared themselves.

On the other hand, Jaxon sprinted toward the gate control building, kicked the door open, and rushed inside. The control system was still active, the gate having been left in emergency mode.

His hand finally reached the switch as he pulled it down.

KRRRNNNGG! The locking mechanisms released with a heavy metallic groan. A moment later, the massive iron gate slowly began opening outward.

Outside, Na-rin raised her flashlight toward the widening gap and her eyes suddenly widened. "Jaxon! There’s an infected outside!"

Through the small opening beneath the rising gate, dozens of infected had been standing completely still outside the gate. The moment the gate began to move, several of their heads slowly turned toward the noise.

"Shit!" Jaxon rushed out as he raised his weapon and opened fire.

THUP! THUP! THUP!

The first infected dropped instantly, but the others sprinted toward the opening.

He kept firing, but then something larger moved among them.

One of the infected stood out from the rest, but it wasn’t simply a bigger infected.

Dozens of infected had been fused together into a single grotesque mass. Arms protruded from its torso at unnatural angles, while several legs were twisted together beneath its body. Half-formed heads were embedded throughout the mass, their mouths opening and closing as if they were still trying to scream.

The grotesque creature dragged itself toward the opening.

"Fire at it!" Elena shouted. Everyone reacted almost at the same time. Weapons swung toward the fused infected as gunfire erupted around the gate.

BANG! BANG! BANG! Bullets tore through the smaller infected rushing toward them, dropping them one after another before they could reach the opening.

But the larger creature barely reacted. Rounds punched into its tangled mass of flesh, yet the damage seemed almost meaningless as its countless limbs continued dragging its enormous body forward.

"Keep firing!" Natasha shouted, squeezing the trigger again and again.

"I’ll handle it!" Bong-gu suddenly stepped forward and raised the combat shotgun, bracing it against his shoulder.

BANG! The Blast Wave erupted from the shotgun and slammed into the fused infected with tremendous force. Its entire mass was violently thrown backward, its tangled limbs flailing through the air before it crashed heavily onto the road.

Jaxon followed and raised his weapon.

THUP! THUP! Two bullets tore through the creature’s legs, blowing them apart under the impact. But the dozens of twisted limbs scraped against the ground as it desperately tried to pull itself forward.

THUP! Another bullet followed tearing through one of the malformed heads embedded in its upper body.

He fired again, then again, each shot ripping through another part of the grotesque mass until the remaining heads were blown apart.

"Is it dead?" Bong-gu asked, breathing heavily.

"Stay alert," Thomas warned.

Everyone kept their weapons trained on the corpse as the massive gate continued opening. Once the gap became wide enough, they could finally see what had been waiting outside.

The sight made them sick.

Hundreds, perhaps even thousands, of infected bodies were scattered across the road and the surrounding area. Burned-out vehicles, abandoned weapons, and the remains of defensive positions showed that the soldiers stationed at the northern gate had fought here.

Jaxon slowly stepped closer, his eyes moving across the corpses.

Then he noticed something. Thin black strands were wrapped around several of the bodies, connecting them to one another. The dark, root-like material seemed almost alive, stretching between the corpses and disappearing beneath the pavement.

’Did that thing form the same way as the colossal infected?’

His expression darkened as he stared at them. "Those damn roots are getting more troublesome."

He stood and returned to the vehicles before opening his Storage Space. Two Recon Drones appeared in his hands, and he passed one to Cindy and the other to Claire.

"I want both of you to scout the route ahead. Use the drones to check the forest and make sure there aren’t any infected hiding along the way."

"Got it," Cindy replied.

Claire nodded and quickly activated her drone as well.

The two small machines rose into the air, their lights disappearing into the darkness beyond the gate as they began scouting the road ahead.

A few moments later, the distant rumble of engines reached them.

The noise grew louder by the second, mixed with the screams of infected and the heavy roar of approaching vehicles.

"Let’s move ahead first. We’ll find a good position farther down the road and wait for the convoy there." Jaxon said as he climbed into the back of the Hilux

Thomas started the military truck while Haris stepped on the accelerator of the Hilux. The two vehicles rolled through the northern gate, with the military truck following closely behind as they continued several hundred meters down the road before finally slowing to a stop.
