Chapter 200: The Failed Evacuation
In the darkness of the night, the distant rumble of engines grew louder.
One by one, buses, armored vehicles, and military trucks came rushing down the road toward the northern gate. Soldiers stood on top of several armored vehicles, firing their weapons as they moved, while mounted machine guns swept across the streets and tore into the infected chasing them.
More than twenty buses were packed with civilians. Their terrified faces could be seen through the windows, many of them screaming as infected slammed against the reinforced glass, climbed onto the sides of the buses, and desperately tried to force their way inside.
"Here they come," Jaxon said, raising his DMR. "Start the engines."
Haris and Thomas immediately started their vehicles as the Hilux and military truck rolled forward, moving farther down the road.
Jaxon pressed the rifle against his shoulder and looked through the scope. His eyes quickly focused on the streets behind the convoy.
They were almost completely covered in infected.
Hundreds... No, thousands.
And most of them were Grasshopper Infected.
They sprinted across the streets with terrifying speed, easily catching up to the vehicles despite the convoy already moving at full speed.
’This is trouble. They might reach us too.’ Jaxon frowned before pulling the trigger.
THUP! The nearest Grasshopper Infected lunged toward the side of a bus, but the bullet tore straight through its head. Dark blood sprayed across the side of the vehicle as its body tumbled onto the road.
THUP! THUP! THUP! He kept firing, targeting the infected that were getting closest to the buses and soldiers. Every shot removed another threat, but there were simply too many of them.
Suddenly, one of the buses near the rear began swerving wildly.
"What the hell?" Jaxon muttered.
He immediately shifted his scope toward it.
Several infected had already climbed onto the bus. One had reached the driver’s window and was clawing through the broken glass, attacking the driver as the bus struggled to stay on the road.
The driver lost control.
The bus swerved violently across the road before tipping onto its side with a deafening crash.
The windows shattered as the bus slid across the pavement, throwing several civilians against the seats and walls inside.
Then the infected rushed toward it.
They climbed over the overturned bus and tore through the broken windows, forcing their way inside.
"Help! Somebody help us!"
"AHHHHH!"
Terrified screams erupted from inside the bus as the civilians desperately tried to escape through the shattered windows. But there were too many infected surrounding them.
On the other side of the road, Jaxon’s group could only watch the convoy from a distance in silence.
They were too far away to provide accurate cover, and getting any closer would only put them in the path of the horde.
"Should we help?" Bong-gu asked, but after looking at the countless infected chasing the convoy, he quickly shook his head. "...No. Forget it."
"There’s no need to take that risk," Natasha calmly said beside him. "If we get too close, we’ll only endanger ourselves. We should focus on the infected that might get ahead of the convoy."
She picked up the radio and pressed the button. "Cindy, how’s the road ahead looking?"
Cindy’s voice came through after a moment. "It’s hard to see. But so far, we haven’t spotted any infected ahead."
"Alright. Keep watching. If you see anything, tell us immediately."
"Got it."
...
Meanwhile, the situation inside the convoy was rapidly getting worse.
Panic spread through the buses as civilians screamed and clung to whatever they could hold onto. Some were crying, while others desperately looked through the windows at the infected swarming around them.
"Faster! Drive faster!"
The passengers shouted at the driver, their voices filled with fear.
The driver gritted his teeth and pushed the bus as hard as he could, but the road ahead was already becoming difficult to navigate with so many vehicles and infected moving around them.
Then a loud crack came from one of the buses near the rear.
CRACK! The reinforced window shattered.
Before the soldiers nearby could react, an infected forced its arm through the broken window, followed by its head. It immediately grabbed the nearest civilian and pulled him toward the opening.
"Get off me!" The man screamed as the infected bit deeply into his arm.
"AHHH!"
A few seconds later, the man suddenly turned toward the people around him.
His eyes had already turned dark.
He lunged at the nearest passenger and sank his teeth into their shoulder.
"Get away from me!"
The passengers panicked and tried to move away, but there was nowhere to go. The narrow aisle quickly became a mess of people pushing and stumbling over one another as the infection spread.
Then the driver screamed.
An infected had reached through the damaged window and grabbed him.
He struggled to pull away, but the infected bit into his arm before he could break free.
"Gah!" His hands slipped from the wheel.
The bus immediately swerved.
"Watch out!"
The driver desperately tried to regain control, but it was already too late.
BOOM! The bus slammed into another vehicle, causing both buses to lose balance. They tipped onto their sides and crashed across the road, blocking the path behind them.
The remaining passengers screamed as the windows shattered. Several managed to crawl out of the overturned buses, desperately trying to run toward the vehicles ahead.
But the infected were already waiting.
They rushed toward the fleeing civilians from every direction.
"Run!"
"Help us!"
"Please!"
The screams quickly disappeared beneath the growls of the infected as the horde overwhelmed them.
The two overturned buses became a temporary barrier, slowing the horde down just long enough for the remaining vehicles to push forward.
Armored vehicles accelerated past the wreckage, followed by the remaining buses and military trucks.
The soldiers continued firing behind them as they fought to keep the infected from catching up.
One by one, the vehicles passed through the northern gate.
