Chapter 42: Chapter 42: The Good, The Bad, The Blind

I moved to the nearby water station and checked my reflection just to confirm I hadn’t somehow become someone else.

Same violet hair. Same yellow eyes. Same face.

I turned back to them and kept my voice even.

"I’m Revien."

The silver-haired girl tilted her head slightly, like she was mapping the sound.

"I... I’m Saber Madison," she said. Her voice was quiet but steady.

I studied her for a second longer than was polite.

The brown-skinned woman let out a dry laugh.

"Can’t you see that from her eyes?"

Only Saber seemed approachable enough not to bite my head off immediately. I moved beside her, keeping my voice low.

"Can you walk on your own?"

"I will manage," she replied without hesitation.

"My senses are sharp. Sound, air pressure, footsteps, mana density. I don’t need eyes the way you do."

Ruby raised an eyebrow.

"He’s already checking if the blind girl needs a babysitter. Cute."

"I’m checking if the blind girl is going to get us all killed by walking into a wall," I shot back.

"There’s a difference."

Rei finally spoke again, voice flat.

"She won’t. Stop wasting time."

"Are you this rude to everyone?"

"Yes."

Saber didn’t react to either of them.

She adjusted the grip on her weapon, a thin, flexible blade that looked more like a whip-sword than a standard weapon, and started walking toward the dungeon gate without waiting for anyone.

Ruby fell in beside her, still smiling.

"She’s always like that. Don’t take it personally."

"I wasn’t."

"Sure you weren’t."

Rei walked past both of us without another word, her boots making almost no sound on the wet stone. The way she moved was precise. Controlled. Like every step had already been calculated three moves ahead.

I followed.

The tunnel narrowed as we moved forward.

Greenish water trickled down the walls in thin streams, glowing faintly under some unseen light source. The chill of the air settled into my suit.

Every few seconds, a distant drip echoed, making it hard to tell how deep the cave system actually went.

Ruby whistled low under her breath.

"They really went for the atmosphere, huh? Feels like a real low-rank gate."

Saber tilted her head, listening carefully.

"Four distinct monster signatures within two hundred meters. Two are stationary. Two are moving."

Rei didn’t comment. She scanned the tunnel ahead, eyes narrowing.

I kept my hands loose at my sides, already feeling the low hum of mana under my skin. The system stayed quiet for now, but I could feel it watching.

"Alright," I said, keeping my voice calm.

"We move as a unit. Saber, you’re our early warning. Ruby, stay mid-range so you can reach anyone who gets hit. Rei... you’re the front."

Ruby snorted, the sound bouncing off the stone.

"Listen to him. Already giving orders."

"I’m giving suggestions. You can ignore them and die however you want."

Rei’s dark eyes flicked toward me for half a second.

"He talks too much."

"And you talk too little," I replied.

"We’re even."

Saber actually smiled a little at that, though she tried to hide it.

"He’s not wrong," she murmured.

"We should move before the stationary signatures decide to become active ones."

Ruby rolled her shoulders.

"Fine. But if this guy starts kissing anyone mid-fight for a buff, I’m leaving him behind."

I glanced at her.

"Noted."

We started moving deeper into the cave system. The air grew heavier the further we went, thick with the artificial pressure the simulation used to mimic real gate conditions. My pulse stayed steady, but my mind was already working.

Three strangers.

One blind. One who barely spoke. One who thought everything was a joke.

And me, the guy who still wasn’t sure how far he could push his power without breaking someone.

This was going to be a long simulation.

Saber walked a half-step ahead of me, her white eyes unfocused but her head constantly tilting to catch every sound and shift in air pressure.

Ruby stayed to my left, hands already glowing faintly with the soft green light of her healing mana.

Rei took the front without being asked, her braid swinging once before settling against her back.

I exhaled slowly.

"System," I thought.

[Yes?]

"Keep the chain ready. But don’t activate anything unless I say so."

[Understood. Observation mode engaged.]

Good.

Because the last thing I needed was to accidentally overload three people I had just met while trying to look competent.

We turned a corner.

The tunnel opened into a wider chamber where the ceiling rose higher and the glowing water pooled in shallow basins.

Something moved in the darkness ahead.

Rei’s hand went to her weapon. Saber’s head snapped toward the sound. Ruby’s smile finally faded into something more focused.

I rolled my shoulders once and stepped forward with them.
