Chapter 43: Chapter 43: Splitting Open the Calamity Rodent’s Frame

"Stop."

My voice cut through the damp air of the cave. The three of them halted at once.

Rei turned back first, dark eyes narrowing. Ruby raised an eyebrow. Saber tilted her head toward the sound of my voice, white eyes unfocused but attentive.

"Let’s discuss our powers first," I said.

"We need a plan before we walk into whatever’s waiting deeper in."

Saber was the one who answered.

"I lost my vision to a gate-break years ago. I compensate with an echolocation-adjacent mana sense. I ’see’ mana signatures, heat, and movement. That’s enough."

Ruby gave a small shrug, the amusement still present in her amber eyes.

"I provide support. Healing, status cleanse, emergency stabilisation. I’m the one who keeps you breathing when something decides to open you up."

Rei just stood there. Silent. Arms crossed. The burn scar on her forearm caught the faint green glow of the water.

I stared at her.

"For fuck’s sake, we are going to train a lot together from here on out whether you like it or not. Better start speaking fast."

Her eyes locked on mine for a long second. Then she lifted her left hand, pressed a finger against her palm, and sliced a shallow line across the skin.

A few dark droplets fell. They stopped mid-air, suspended for a heartbeat, then hardened and stretched into a thin, razor-edged blade of solidified blood.

The weapon rested lightly in her grip as it had always belonged there.

"Happy?" she asked, voice flat.

I didn’t answer with words. I opened my right hand.

Blue ethereal chains formed from my palm, the links glowing faintly in the dim cave light. I focused, separating the single chain into three thinner ones.

The multiplication worked more smoothly than I expected. I held the ends out toward them.

"Hold it."

Ruby stared at the glowing chain as if it might bite her.

"The hell?"

"Just do it."

Saber reached out first, fingers wrapping carefully around the cool energy. Ruby followed after a second of hesitation.

Rei looked at the chain for a long moment, then finally took it with clear reluctance.

The moment the connection locked, all three of them gasped.

Saber’s white eyes widened. Even without real sight, the shared vision flooded her senses.

She could suddenly "see" the greenish water, the rough stone walls, the faint glow of the mineral streams.

"Is that water green?" she whispered, almost to herself.

Ruby’s voice jumped an octave.

"I can hear you. Holy fuck— I can feel where everyone is!"

Rei reacted the fastest.

She immediately dropped the chain. The connection to her severed with a snap of energy.

"I don’t need it."

I looked at her, keeping my voice even.

"It will help us."

"Suit yourself."

Tch. Whatever.

I focused on the remaining two links.

The shared awareness with Saber and Ruby settled into the back of my mind like a quiet second layer of senses.

I could faintly feel the way Saber mapped the air currents and mana densities. Ruby’s healing mana hummed at the edge of my perception, ready.

We started moving forward again.

The tunnel narrowed, then opened into a wider chamber. The green water pooled in shallow basins. Distant drips continued to echo. Then something moved in the darkness ahead.

A hamster.

Except it was the size of a bull.

Thick, matted fur. Oversized teeth that looked capable of shearing through bone. Its eyes glowed a dull red as it sniffed the air and locked onto us.

The ground trembled slightly under its weight when it took a step forward.

Rei’s blood blade rose into a ready stance. I quickly tied the remaining Appraisal chains around my belt so they wouldn’t tangle, then formed a new single chain and shifted its property to Combat Weapon.

The links solidified into something denser, heavier, more physical. The giant hamster charged.

Rei moved first.

She closed the distance in three long strides and met the creature head-on, blood blade flashing in a tight arc aimed at its front leg.

The monster twisted with surprising speed for its size and tried to bite her. She sidestepped cleanly, the teeth missing her by inches.

Saber’s voice came through the shared link, calm and precise.

"Left side. Weak point under the shoulder joint. Heat signature spikes there."

I felt the information as clearly as if I had seen it myself.

"Ruby, stay back and keep the heal ready," I said out loud.

"Already on it."

I swung the combat chain. The solid links cracked through the air like a whip and wrapped around the hamster’s thick neck.

The creature roared and tried to shake me off. I dug my boots into the wet stone and pulled hard, using my strength to yank its head sideways.

Rei didn’t waste the opening. She stepped in and drove her blood blade deep into the exact weak point Saber had called out.

The creature convulsed. Dark blood sprayed across the stone.

It wasn’t dead yet. The hamster twisted violently, nearly dragging me off my feet. I released the chain just in time and reformed it, this time wrapping the links around one of its front legs.

Rei cut again, this time across the tendon. The leg collapsed.

Ruby’s voice cut in.

"Vital signs dropping fast. One more solid hit."

Saber’s shared sense highlighted the final vulnerability, the spot at the base of the skull.

Rei saw it the same moment I did through the residual link.

She leapt onto the creature’s back, drove the blood blade down with both hands, and twisted.

The giant hamster let out one last guttural sound and collapsed, the impact shaking the chamber.

Dust and water droplets fell from the ceiling.

Silence returned, broken only by the distant dripping and our own breathing.

I released the combat chain. The links dissolved back into blue energy and then faded.

Ruby let out a low whistle.

"Okay. That was actually clean."

Saber stood still for a moment, processing the shared vision that was already fading now that the fight was over.
