My Superpower Is Piloting Magical Girl Corpses?
Chapter 41.2: The First Generation Magical Girl“Sigh, I’m not stopping you.”
The Phoenix, crouched on its bird perch, turned its head away and covered its eyes with a wing, saying with an odd tone: “But let me warn you now, if this little girl starts bawling her eyes out later, I’m not responsible for comforting her.”
“As for Mengmengxiang... forget it, I’m guessing you reckless bastard won’t feel much anyway.”
“Speaking of which, can a person’s personality really change this much after losing their memory?” It muttered.
Airwen didn’t bother responding. She simply left the reception room and walked straight toward the staircase behind the front desk. Su Fang silently stood up and followed, while Lin Guang walked alongside her without a word.
“Currently, Kazenari Town has over thirty active and retired magical girls.”
“Knowing that, you’re probably wondering why, with so many people, the headquarters is so deserted—no one even comes on weekends.”
As they climbed upward, Airwen’s voice echoed through the empty stairwell.
What came into view wasn’t the expected office building decoration, but a long corridor paved with old wooden floorboards, with only two massive wooden doors on either side.
Airwen reached out and pushed open the wooden door on the left. The hinges were well-oiled, producing no strange noise.
The next moment, the scene inside the room opened up before them.
Su Fang’s eyes widened.
“This place...”
The furnishings inside looked like a somewhat messy school club activity room, filled with the atmosphere of daily life.
Of the six vertical cabinets against the wall, five of them had handwritten names on their doors, the strokes carrying a uniquely delicate and adorable feminine touch.
The cabinet doors were open.
The owners of these cabinets seemed to be a group of very ordinary girls.
Aside from the empty sixth cabinet, the items inside clearly revealed the personalities of the few who had once been active here: one loved sports, one was obsessed with music, one liked tinkering with machinery, and another seemed to be a bookworm, with a pile of yellowed manga comics in the corner.
On a bookshelf to the side of the room sat a group photo.
Su Fang stared at the photo.
It showed five girls in blue-and-white sailor-style school uniforms, arms draped over each other’s shoulders, laughing without a care in the world.
The person who took the photo seemed very amateur—the proportions of the subjects and the background were subtly off, with quite a bit of empty space on the left—but anyone could feel the joy and bond practically spilling out of the picture.
The silver-haired girl said softly, “This was the activity room of the first generation of magical girls after the Cataclysm.”
“Each generation of magical girls spans roughly a decade, but most of them tend to awaken around the same time, so it’s relatively easy to distinguish them.”
“After the third generation established the Association, they moved this room here exactly as it was.”
Airwen looked at the photo with a neutral expression: “According to Association records, they were originally club members from the same school and also the first group chosen by the Sacred Tree.”
“Their generation had the fewest members—only five—yet all of them served as Outer Realm Investigators, reclaiming a total of twenty-one Fragments of Hope, making them the most accomplished generation.”
“Two retired normally and passed away of old age, two went missing in the Outer Realm, and one died in the Outer Realm while covering for her companions.”
“......”
That meant the abnormal mortality rate for first-generation Outer Realm Investigators was sixty percent.
Before the two could react, Airwen led them to the room across the way.
This was also an activity room, but its style was completely different.
The walls were plastered with various celebrity posters and shiny laser stickers, and in the center of the room, a simple small stage had been set up, complete with a full set of band equipment. Though covered in a layer of dust, the fervor of those days was still evident.
“The second generation had far more members than the first, but most of them loved music, so in their spare time, they formed several bands.”
Airwen looked up at several posters on the wall. Nearly twenty magical girls with hair of different colors were depicted playing instruments while maintaining their transformed states.
“Eleven of them chose to become Outer Realm Investigators, three retired normally, and two were permanently disabled.”
“They reclaimed a total of eighteen Fragments.”
The group continued upstairs.
The third floor also had two large rooms.
On the left was a study-filled activity room, with plaster statues and unfinished oil paintings in the corner, the paint long dried, and countless books piled in another corner—overall, the atmosphere seemed quite quiet.
This was the memory belonging to the third generation, the ones who had established the Magical Girl Association.
Twelve became Outer Realm Investigators, five survived, reclaiming eleven Fragments.
On the right was a space resembling a tea party room.
That was the base of the fourth generation.
They had reclaimed eight Fragments.
Lin Guang and Su Fang quietly watched Airwen as she meticulously introduced each generation of magical girls who had served as Outer Realm Investigators and their data.
It was painfully obvious that, as time passed, the number of Fragments found by magical girls had plummeted like a cliff drop.
Because the easy-to-find Fragments were running out.
And according to what Airwen and the Phoenix had said, before the Prophecy Maiden appeared, humans had no way to locate Fragments of Hope. They could only rely on the most primitive method—venturing deep into the Outer Realm and taking their chances in all kinds of dangerous places.
The group stepped onto the fourth floor. The layout suddenly changed.
No longer were there spacious, lively rooms. Instead, a long corridor stretched ahead, lined with small, closed doors on both sides.
“Starting from the fifth generation, the search for Fragments of Hope became increasingly difficult, because most Fragments near the barrier had already been reclaimed. Magical girls had to venture deeper into the Outer Realm.”
“And since the Abyss constantly spawns demon beasts, even previously explored areas are far from safe, so the difficulty of collecting Fragments only grew.”
“The enthusiasm of magical girls also faded more and more.”
Airwen’s voice echoed through the empty corridor, carrying a faint tone of mourning: “So the number of Outer Realm Investigators dwindled.”
“Group and personal friendships still existed, but the magical girls who decided to join the Outer Realm Investigators often reserved a room in advance and placed their belongings inside—because no one knew if they would ever come back from that trip.”
Just like... pre-dug graves.
Lin Guang said silently in his heart.
“So over time, fewer and fewer people were willing to gather at the Association. What was once a lively place became increasingly desolate.”
“All that remained were these rooms, growing in number.”
Airwen stopped in front of a door with a nameplate reading “Seina.”
As she approached, the automatic door let out a soft “beep” and slid open on its own.
The scene inside made Su Fang pause for a moment.
