It was a dreamlike space, like something out of a fairy tale picture book.

Glowing cloud-shaped lamps hung from the ceiling, the walls were painted the color of the sky, and the table was covered with crystal balls and music boxes.

In the most prominent spot on the desk sat two picture frames.

One was a warm family portrait of a happy family of three, while the other was a photo-booth selfie. The girl in the picture had a head of fluffy pink curls, making a funny face at the camera with a smear of cream at the corner of her mouth, as cute as the girl next door.

"I'm not sure who first proposed it."

"Building upon the Fifth Generation, starting from the Sixth Generation, all magical girls get a room of their own here when they join the Association."

Airwen leaned against the doorway, not stepping inside, her voice soft.

"They're not for living in, but for storing proof of their existence."

"Proof of existence..."

Su Fang repeated the heavy words in a daze.

"That's right."

"Because even if they don't go to the dangerous Outer Realm, magical girls can still die in battles against invading demon beasts, so everyone leaves their most treasured things, memories, or words they want to say in this room."

Airwen looked at Su Fang and said calmly, "Whether you become an Outer Realm Investigator or not, as a new magical girl, you have to pick one of these rooms as your own."

"On the surface, being a magical girl is all glamour and shine, but the Association wants everyone to see clearly, from the moment they join, what they and their predecessors are up against."

"Then, no matter what choice they make, whether it's cowardly or brave, at least it'll be a decision made after careful consideration."

"This was originally my first goal in bringing you here today."

Su Fang silently looked at the room whose owner was long gone, then continued forward with Lin Guang and Airwen.

From this point on, some of the doors were tightly shut, not opened.

Airwen pointed at the closed doors. "Everyone's Soul Gems are granted by the Sacred Tree, and our contracts are made with it, so the Sacred Tree can naturally sense whether someone is alive or dead."

"For a living magical girl, the door is locked unless she gets close and unlocks it herself."

Which meant that a door that opened automatically meant its owner was no longer around.

"Let's go."

Airwen led the two of them forward.

Along the way, automatic doors kept sliding open, revealing the inner worlds of their former owners to the newcomers.

Some rooms were piled high with dumbbells and exercise equipment, clearly belonging to some energetic, athletic girl. Others had walls covered entirely with bookshelves, not even leaving room to stand, marking the final traces of a quiet, book-loving girl.

Every open room was a snapshot of a vivid life.

They continued upstairs.

Sixth Generation, Seventh Generation, Eighth Generation...

Here, Su Fang spotted a closed door with a nameplate that read [Forest Pixie].

That gentle, homemaker-like senior was still alive and well, so this door was naturally locked.

They reached the sixth floor.

There were even fewer rooms here.

Lin Guang saw rooms with nameplates for [Blast Maul] and [Shadow Blade], also tightly shut.

At the end of the corridor was where the Tenth Generation of magical girls began.

The first thing that came into view was [Silver of Judgment].

The leading Airwen pressed her hand against the scanner next to the door.

Click.

The door swung open.

Su Fang's eyes widened.

"This..."

Even Lin Guang, a true minimalist at heart, couldn't help but frown slightly.

There was only a hard plank bed, a table, and a computer.

No decorations at all. It was cold and stark, like a temporary prison cell, exuding a sense of resolve that felt like "ready to die at any moment."

"Don't get the wrong idea. I don't have a death wish."

Airwen glanced at their expressions and said flatly, "I just don't think there's anything worth leaving behind. That's all."

Finally, the three of them reached the seventh floor.

This was the newest and most barren floor.

There were only a handful of doors in the corridor.

Su Fang saw rooms with nameplates for [Hermit's Purple] and [Tangtang] — the two who had just been showing off their might on the screen.

At the end of the corridor, Su Fang and Lin Guang stopped.

Because on that door hung a nameplate, hand-drawn with a cute smiling face in red marker—

[Mengmengxiang]

Lin Guang walked over first.

But before she could even reach out, the door let out a soft click and slid open to both sides on its own.

"Huh?"

Su Fang was stunned. "No need to unlock it?"

"...Maybe Phoenix upgraded the tech when building this floor, and it opens when it detects the owner's magic power."

Airwen explained flatly, her black eyes deep and unreadable.

Su Fang instinctively looked at Lin Guang beside her, only to find that the amnesiac senior had no particular reaction and simply walked in.

The room wasn't big, but it was decorated with extraordinary warmth.

Beige wallpaper, floral-print curtains, and a few beanbag chairs piled up in the corner.

The most eye-catching thing was the cabinet directly opposite, which held an old-fashioned, bulky CRT television with a VCR player hooked up below it.

A display cabinet next to it was stuffed full of labeled videotapes, and on the very top sat a handheld DV camcorder, placed perfectly upright.

Lin Guang stepped into the room, her gaze sweeping over the videotapes.

The handwriting on the labels went from neat at first to sloppy later on, chronicling the passage of time:

"March 1, 2332, 1st Outer Realm Exploration"

"March 8, 2332, 2nd Outer Realm Exploration"

"..."

Lin Guang reached out and pulled out the tape on the very edge.

Click.

The tape was slotted into the player.

With a burst of static and snow flickering on the screen, the picture finally lit up.

The background was this very room.

The footage wobbled a bit, as if it took a few adjustments to get it steady.

A cherry-haired girl sat at the desk, dressed in a black-and-white sailor uniform, her hands pressed tightly on her knees. Her nervousness was plain to see, her smile even a little stiff.

"Ahem... is it recording now?"

"I'm Mengmengxiang. I'm fourteen years old, and I'm a magical girl!"

"As for hobbies... singing. Even though I'm not that good at it yet. But if I can retire successfully, I think I'll try to become a singer!"

The girl took a deep breath, looking at the lens. Her eyes were still trembling, but she tried her best to act strong:

"Today is my first day as an Outer Realm Investigator!"

"And I've decided to record every single exploration experience!"

"Even though, even though no one has high hopes for me, and even though I'm really scared of pain... but! To find the Fragments of Hope, I'll do my best! I'll never give up!"

She clenched her little fist and made a cheering gesture at the camera.

The picture cut out abruptly.
