My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 14: Level 45 Core, The Hunter’s GuildThe sun sank below the stone walls of Valerius. Cold shadows stretched across the dirt roads. Saile walked heavily through the streets. His worn tunic hung in dirty shreds. Dried monster blood coated his arms and face. He carried his stolen steel sword in his right hand.
But his left hand drew all the terrified attention.
Saile dragged a massive, glowing purple crystal behind him. It was the corrupted mana core of the Level 45 Abyssal Hound. The core, the size of a large boulder, pulsed with toxic light. It was so heavy it carved a deep trench into the dirt road.
Merchants dropped their goods. Blacksmiths lowered their hammers. People backed away in pure fear, pressing against the buildings to give the bleeding boy room.
"Look at them stare," Naicul laughed darkly inside Saile’s mind. "They feel the dark magic coming off that core. Demand they bow."
"I am not a tyrant," Saile thought back tiredly, wiping sweat from his eyes. "I just want to turn in this quest, expose that noble, and find a bed."
"You are boring," Naicul grumbled, falling quiet.
Saile reached the Hunter’s Guild. Loud laughter and clinking wooden mugs spilled out into the evening air. Saile did not knock. He raised his boot and kicked the thick iron doors open using his Level 22 strength.
Bang!
The heavy doors smashed violently against the inside walls. An echoing boom ripped through the hall. The music and laughter stopped in a single heartbeat.
Over fifty scarred mercenaries turned around, reaching defensively for their weapons. When they saw the skinny, bloody seventeen-year-old boy, their hands froze.
Saile stepped inside without a word. His boots clicked against the stone floor as he dragged the massive Level 45 core behind him, leaving a hissing trail of purple slime.
The veteran hunters took one look at the glowing Abyssal core and stepped out of his way. They knew what kind of monster dropped a core that big.
They also knew the boy’s shiny Guild tag read F-Rank.
It made no sense.
Saile scanned the quiet room and spotted his target.
Neros, the arrogant S-Rank noble, sat at a large oak table near the back. He held a fancy silver cup filled with red wine. He had been laughing loudly just a minute ago.
Now, Neros was entirely pale.
His jaw hung open. His hand shook so badly the red wine spilled all over his polished silver armor.
Saile walked directly up to the noble’s table. With a sudden heave, he lifted the massive Abyssal Hound core high into the air.
He slammed it brutally into the middle of the heavy oak table.
Crash!
The thick wooden table buckled and split under the terrible weight. Sharp splinters flew everywhere. The toxic purple light illuminated Neros’s terrified face.
"You..." Neros stammered weakly, pushing his chair back. "You are supposed to be dead! That canyon was a high-tier Heretic zone!"
"So you finally admit it," Saile said.
His voice was flat and cold, carrying across the quiet guild hall.
"I asked for a low-tier goblin den. But you paid the guild clerk a heavy bag of gold to swap my map coordinates. You sent me into a lethal ambush because I embarrassed you in a fair duel."
The guild hall gasped.
Swapping quest coordinates was the absolute worst crime a hunter could commit. It was premeditated murder.
"Liar!" Neros screamed, his face turning a bright, panicked red. He pointed a shaking finger at Saile. "You are a dirty, unawakened peasant! You probably stole that core from a dead hunting party. There is no way an F-Rank piece of trash killed a Level 45 boss!"
Saile did not argue.
He just slowly turned his head and looked directly at the front desk.
The older guild clerk was hiding nervously behind the wooden counter. He was sweating heavily, his eyes darting around the room looking for an escape.
He knew he had been caught.
Suddenly, a massive, heavily scarred man stepped out of the shadows.
It was the Guild Master.
The veteran Platinum-Rank warrior held a giant broadsword on his shoulder. He walked over to the desk, reached over the counter, and grabbed the terrified clerk by the collar.
The Guild Master lifted the screaming clerk and threw him roughly onto the stone floor in front of Neros’s broken table.
A heavy leather pouch fell out of the clerk’s pocket, spilling dozens of shiny gold coins everywhere.
"The boy is telling the truth," the Guild Master announced, his deep voice rumbling. "I saw Neros hand you this gold early this morning. I checked the official quest log myself. You sent a rookie straight into an Abyssal nest. That is a crime I do not forgive."
The veteran mercenaries growled angrily, glaring fiercely at the young noble.
Neros was completely trapped.
His rich friends quickly stood up and stepped away from him, refusing to get involved.
"This is completely ridiculous!" Neros shrieked, his voice cracking. "I am an S-Rank noble! My family serves the Holy Church directly! I will not let this filthy peasant insult my honor!"
Neros completely lost his mind.
He drew a sharp, silver dagger from his belt. It glowed instantly with a blinding, dangerous holy light.
He lunged forward over the broken table, aiming the glowing blade directly for Saile’s exposed throat.
"Do not kill him," Saile reminded himself. "We do not need the Church guards here tonight."
"Then let me break his arms!" Naicul yelled eagerly. "Just one arm, Saile!"
Saile did not need the dark mana for this.
He was Level 22 now. His physical stats were incredibly high, and his reflexes were razor-sharp.
The S-Rank noble looked like he was moving in slow motion. His attack was telegraphed and sloppy.
Saile did not step back.
He planted his boots and activated his D-Grade skill.
"Phantom Step," Saile whispered calmly.
Boom!
The air cracked with a loud sonic boom. Saile turned into a blurry, vibrating shadow, vanishing instantly from his spot.
Neros thrust his glowing dagger into empty space. The noble stumbled forward awkwardly, losing his balance.
Saile appeared perfectly behind Neros.
He dropped his weight low, planting his hands firmly against the cold stone floor. He whipped his right leg around in a brutal, lightning-fast spin sweep.
Smack!
Saile’s heavy boot slammed directly into the back of Neros’s silver-plated knees. The metal dented instantly under Saile’s Level 22 strength.
Neros yelled in sudden pain as his legs were swept completely out from under him.
As the noble fell backward toward the floor, Saile popped back up to his feet.
He did not give Neros a single second to recover.
Saile stepped forward, twisting his hips sharply, and threw a tight, devastating left jab.
His fist connected cleanly with the absolute center of Neros’s shiny silver breastplate.
Boom!
The impact created a visible, circular shockwave that rippled through the guild hall. The heavy silver armor cracked loudly right down the middle, splintering inward.
All the air was violently knocked out of Neros’s lungs in a single gasp.
The S-Rank noble hit the stone floor hard. He bounced once before sliding backward across the room.
He crashed heavily into a wooden pillar.
He curled into a tight ball on the ground, wheezing and coughing up spit.
Saile stood perfectly still, lowering his fists.
He had not drawn his stolen sword. He had not used the EX-Rank dark magic.
He had completely dismantled the arrogant noble with just two simple, flawless strikes.
The veteran hunters erupted into massive, deafening cheers. They slammed their wooden mugs against the tables, whistling and shouting Saile’s fake alias with genuine respect.
"Ghost! Ghost! Ghost!"
The mercenaries chanted happily.
The Guild Master walked over to the coughing noble. He reached down and aggressively ripped the shiny Guild tag right off Neros’s belt.
"You are officially stripped of your rank," the Guild Master declared coldly, tossing the tag onto the floor near the boy’s feet. "You bring deep shame to the Hunter’s Guild. If I ever see your face inside these walls again, I will cut your hands off myself. Now get out."
Neros scrambled weakly to his feet.
He was crying freely now, tears mixing with the dirt on his pale face. He looked at Saile with pure hatred, but he did not dare say a single word.
Stripped of his rank and utterly humiliated in front of the entire guild, the noble turned around and fled out the heavy iron doors, running away into the dark night.
Saile watched him go.
He felt a deep, warm sense of satisfaction.
It was a total, undeniable victory.
"You should have let me melt his eyes," Naicul complained softly in Saile’s head. "He is going to run back to his rich mommy and daddy. They will send more Church dogs after us."
"Let them come," Saile thought back confidently. "I will just devour them too."
The Guild Master walked up to Saile. He looked at the massive, glowing purple core resting on the broken oak table. He whistled low in his throat, clearly impressed.
"I do not know how a kid with an F-Rank reading killed a Level 45 Abyssal Hound," the Guild Master said, crossing his muscular arms. "And honestly, I do not care. You survived a lethal sabotage, and you brought back a boss core. That makes you a legend in my book. The bounty on an Abyssal beast is massive."
The large man handed Saile a thick leather pouch. It clinked loudly, filled to the very top with pure, shiny gold coins.
"Take the gold, Ghost," the Guild Master smiled warmly. "Go buy yourself a hot bath, a massive steak, and some new clothes. You definitely earned it today."
Saile took the heavy pouch of gold. He nodded politely.
"Thank you."
He tied the gold to his belt right next to his Silver Rank tag.
He turned around and walked out of the loud, cheering guild hall.
The cool night air felt amazing against his tired, bloody skin.
He finally had enough money to survive. He had proven his strength.
Most importantly, he was one step closer to becoming strong enough to tear down the corrupt Saints who ruled the world.
