My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 2 - 10,000EXP, The Rusted HarpoonSaile gasped for air. He sat up so fast his vision spun in blurry, dark circles.
The crushing weight of the giant stone block was completely gone. In fact, the heavy stone was lying in the sand right beside him, split cleanly in half.
Saile touched his chest with shaking fingers. His ribs were not broken anymore. His skin was perfectly whole. There was not a single drop of blood on his tunic.
But instead of the ruined village, his eyes were completely filled with glowing golden text. Floating screens made of pure light hovered right in front of his face. They bypassed the Church’s false crystal entirely, shining with a brilliant, undeniable truth.
[System Initialized. Host: Saile Retrac.]
[Class Acquired: Vessel of the Fallen.]
"What is this?" Saile muttered.
He waved his hand through the golden light, but his fingers just swooshed right through the screen like smoke.
"That is my true power, you fool," a deep, sarcastic voice resonated inside his mind. It was Naicul. The ancient God sounded like he was standing right next to Saile’s ear. "Your corrupt priests and their shiny rocks are a joke. I bypassed their false heavens entirely. Look closely."
A new line of golden text flashed brightly in front of Saile.
[Talent Acquired: EX-Rank - Endless Devourer.]
"EX-Rank?" Saile asked out loud, his voice full of disbelief.
"It breaks the very rules of this pathetic world," Naicul explained. His tone was heavy with weariness and ancient pride. "You are an anomaly now. You have no level cap. You can devour the energy, the skills, and the weapons of anything you kill. But do not get too excited yet. Your body is much worse than I originally thought."
Saile looked down at his own arms.
"You have the arms of a starving twig," Naicul complained bitterly. "And your base stats are absolutely pitiful. If a strong wind blows, you might actually snap in half."
"I am a fisherman, not a soldier," Saile shot back. He hated the arrogant, mocking tone in the God’s voice. "I catch normal fish. I do not fight giant sea monsters."
"Well, you do today," Naicul replied coldly.
Saile suddenly remembered the monster. He spun around, his heart pounding hard against his ribs.
Avery was lying in the soft sand just a few feet away. Saile rushed over and dropped to his knees. He placed a shaking hand on her small back.
She was breathing evenly. She was just unconscious from the shock and the loud noise.
Relief washed over Saile like a cool wave but the relief did not last long.
A deafening roar struck through the air. The physical force of the sound hit Saile like a solid brick wall. The wind yelled wildly, blowing sharp sand into his eyes. The ground trembled so aggressively that Saile had to plant his hands in the dirt just to stay upright.
The Leviathan was still here.
The monster was the size of a small mountain. It was tearing through the ruined docks of Orali, its jagged black scales pulsing with toxic purple light.
A new golden screen flashed aggressively in front of Saile’s eyes.
[Emergency Quest: Slay the Leviathan.]
[Target Level: 30.]
[Failure Penalty: Death of the Host and Sister.]
"Are you crazy?" Saile yelled. He glared angrily at the floating screen. "That thing is Level 30! I am Level 1! I do not even have a sword!"
"Stop crying," Naicul sighed inside his mind. "You have my residual dark mana flowing through your veins now. Pick up a weapon..... Trust your new instincts... If you die here, I swear I will haunt your ghost for eternity."
Saile looked around the ruined beach. Half-buried in the wet sand was a heavy, rusted iron harpoon. It was old and covered in green seaweed.
Saile grabbed the thick wooden handle and pulled it out. The moment his fingers closed around the weapon, a strange, freezing energy rushed up his arms. It gave him a sudden burst of incredible strength. Black, ink-like aura leaked from his skin, wrapping tightly around the rusted iron.
"Okay," Saile whispered, lowering his stance. "We can do this."
He broke into a sprint.
And Boom!
The sand exploded beneath his feet. Saile pushed forward at a speed he had never felt before. The sheer force of his sudden movement created a visible shockwave in the air. The wind howled as he transformed into a dark blur, rushing straight toward the giant sea monster.
The Leviathan noticed the dark mana immediately. It turned its massive, ugly head. Its glowing purple eyes locked onto Saile. The beast opened its jaws and roared, sending a thick, swirling wave of toxic purple energy flying across the beach.
The air hissed as the magic burned through the oxygen.
Saile did not panic. His body moved almost on its own, guided flawlessly by Naicul’s ancient battle instincts.
And with a burst of speed, Saile planted his foot hard into the sand. He threw himself forward into a tight shoulder roll recovery, dodging right under the massive blast of toxic energy.
The purple magic hit the sand behind him, melting the ground into hot glass with a loud hiss.
He bounced back to his feet without losing any speed nor strength. He was right in front of the bloody beast now.
The Leviathan swung its massive, spiked tail. It moved incredibly fast for something so huge. The tail ripped through the air, creating a loud sonic boom as it aimed directly for Saile’s ribs. If that hit him, he would be crushed into paste.
"Jump!" Naicul commanded sharply.
Saile pushed dark mana into his legs. He launched into an aerial twist kick. He spun high into the air, flipping right over the massive, spiked tail. The tail smashed into a stone wall directly below him, sending heavy chunks of rock flying everywhere.
The ground trembled violently from the brutal impact.
While hanging in mid-air, Saile saw it. Right on the top of the Leviathan’s head was a large, glowing purple crystal. It was the monster’s corrupted mana core. It pulsed with a sick, toxic light.
"There is the weak point," Naicul said. "Pierce it. Put your entire back into it!"
Saile began to fall back toward the monster. He gripped the rusted harpoon tightly with both hands. He channeled every single drop of the cold, dark mana into his arms. The black aura around the harpoon grew wild and violent, sparking with dark lightning.
The Leviathan looked up, opening its massive jaws to bite him right out of the sky.
Saile spun his body, using the heavy momentum of his fall. He thrust the harpoon straight down with all his might.
Boom!
The rusted iron pierced directly into the glowing purple crystal. A massive, circular shockwave exploded from the point of impact, blowing the clouds completely away from the sky. The wind shrieked loudly as the dark mana from the harpoon violently collided with the beast’s toxic magic.
The Leviathan let out a terrible, bubbling scream.
Saile twisted the harpoon, pushing it much deeper into the skull. The beast’s giant purple core suddenly cracked like cheap glass. A second later, it shattered completely.
The monster went totally slack. Its massive body crashed down onto the ruined docks with a heavy, sickening thump. The ground shook one last time, and then everything went completely still.
Saile yanked the harpoon free and landed safely on the wet sand. He was breathing heavily, his chest heaving up and down. His muscles burned, but he felt incredibly alive. He had just killed a Level 30 monster with a rusted piece of metal.
Suddenly, the monster’s giant body began to dissolve. It melted away into hundreds of glowing blue and gold orbs of light. The orbs floated through the air and rushed directly into Saile’s chest.
Golden System screens exploded in front of his eyes. They popped up so fast they almost blinded him.
[EX-Rank Talent: Endless Devourer Activated.]
[You have slain: Corrupted Leviathan (Level 30).]
[EXP Gained: 10,000 EXP.]
Saile felt a sudden, massive rush of pure heat inside his veins. It was the most incredible feeling in the world. His tired muscles instantly repaired themselves. His senses became sharper. The heavy, rusted harpoon in his hand suddenly felt as light as a feather.
[Level Up!]
[Level Up!]
[Level Up!]
[Level Up! Level 1 to 10!]
[Base stats noticeably increased.]
"I... I jumped nine levels at once?" Saile gasped. He stared at his own hands.
The power flowing through his veins was completely intoxicating. It made his head spin. This was the true power of the EX-Rank Endless Devourer talent. There was no bottleneck. There was no limit at all. He just absorbed everything the monster had to offer.
"Do not get a big head, boy," Naicul laughed flatly in his mind. "Level 10 is still the rank of a common street thug. But it is a decent start for a skinny fisherman."
Saile ignored the insult. Another item dropped from the fading light of the Leviathan. A glowing blue shard of crystal floated gently into Saile’s hands.
[Loot Drop: Skill Shard (1/5) acquired.]
"Skill shards?" Saile asked, turning the glowing blue crystal over in his fingers.
"Yes," Naicul explained. "When you gather enough shards from the enemies you devour, the System will forge them into a new magical skill. Put it in your inventory. Just think about storing it, and the System will do the rest."
Saile pictured the item vanishing, and it instantly melted into golden light, storing itself safely inside his System interface.
He turned around and walked quickly back to Avery. She was still sleeping peacefully on the sand. He picked her up gently, resting her small head against his shoulder.
He felt so much stronger now. Carrying her was totally effortless.
He looked out at the ruined village of Orali. The houses were smashed. The docks were gone. But they were alive.
"We did it," Saile whispered to himself.
"We survived a big fish," Naicul corrected him coldly. "But the real danger is just starting. Look."
Saile frowned and turned his head toward the village entrance. Down the dirt road, he could sense a new threat approaching.
The real nightmare was only just beginning.
