My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly

Chapter 21: Forged Skill, The Holy Greatsword

The Gold-Rank Church Executor stood at the entrance of the dead-end alley, completely blocking Saile’s escape. The massive, double-edged greatsword in his hands erupted with bright, blinding holy flames. The intense fire pushed the freezing night mist completely away. The heat was suffocating, making the narrow alley feel like the inside of a burning furnace.

Saile Retrac tightened his grip on the heavy hilt of the Corroded Divine Blade. His heart slammed violently against his ribs.

The gap in their power was terrifying.

He was only Level 22.

The giant man standing before him was Level 48.

The Executor possessed more than twice his raw stats, and his strength was further amplified by an S-Rank Holy Talent.

"Do not just stand there," Naicul hissed sharply inside Saile’s mind.

The ancient God’s voice was completely serious.

"If that holy fire touches your skin, it will burn your EX-Rank mana core to ash. I’m giving you the ten percent partial synchronization again. Take it. Now!"

Saile blinked hard.

His left eye instantly ignited with a piercing, glowing silver light.

The ancient God’s flawless combat experience flooded back into his tired muscles. His grip tightened around the heavy, rusted iron sword.

Once again, the weapon felt balanced.

Almost light.

But the old metal still offered no real protection against the blazing holy light surrounding the Executor.

The Executor did not shout a battle cry.

He simply moved.

His body exploded forward with the terrifying speed of a high-level veteran. He crossed the dirty cobblestones in a single stride, raising his flaming greatsword above his head before bringing it down in a brutal overhead strike.

Saile dropped his weight low.

He planted his boots firmly into the dirt and threw himself backward into a rapid backflip.

The burning blade sliced through the empty air exactly where his neck had been a fraction of a second earlier.

BOOM!

The air cracked with a deafening sonic boom.

The flaming greatsword smashed into the dirt.

The ground exploded outward.

A circular shockwave ripped through the narrow alley, sending dust and broken stones flying in every direction. The sheer impact made the entire street tremble beneath Saile’s boots.

But the blade had missed.

The holy aura had not.

Intense S-Rank holy energy washed directly over Saile’s body.

Saile landed on his feet and immediately dropped into a tight shoulder roll, trying to create more distance.

The moment his shoulder touched the dirt, he gasped in pain.

The holy magic was actively burning through his dark mana.

His skin blistered instantly.

The terrible heat seared his arms and legs through his torn tunic. It felt as though boiling water had been thrown across his entire body.

"He is too fast!" Saile thought, gritting his teeth against the burning pain. "I can’t get close to him! Just being near his aura is burning me!"

"You have to keep moving!" Naicul roared. "Do not let him pin you down! Use your acrobatics! Use the walls!"

The Executor calmly pulled his greatsword from the dirt.

He spun around, twisting his broad shoulders, and unleashed a wide horizontal slash.

A sharp wave of burning holy fire erupted from the blade, racing directly toward Saile’s waist.

Saile pushed off the ground with all the speed his Level 22 body could muster.

He dashed toward the nearest brick wall.

His right boot slammed against the rough stone.

He executed a desperate wall-run, sprinting three rapid steps vertically up the tall wall and narrowly avoiding the wave of holy fire beneath him.

The flames crashed into a pile of rotting wooden crates at the end of the alley.

The wood instantly turned to black ash with a loud, aggressive hiss.

Saile reached the highest point of his wall-run and pushed off the brick.

He launched himself through the smoky air, diving directly toward the Executor.

His hips twisted sharply.

He unleashed a devastating aerial twist kick, aiming his heavy boot at the side of the man’s silver helmet.

The Executor did not even flinch.

He casually raised his left arm.

His thick silver gauntlet intercepted the kick.

SMACK!

A massive shockwave rippled through the damp air.

Saile’s Level 22 strength was stopped dead.

The Executor’s S-Rank-enhanced physical defense was like striking a solid wall of iron.

"My turn, Heretic."

The Executor shoved his arm forward.

The sheer force of the movement sent Saile flying backward.

Saile crashed heavily into the dead-end brick wall at the back of the alley.

The impact knocked the breath completely from his lungs.

He dropped to the dirt, coughing up a small splatter of blood.

His muscles locked up in protest.

His skin was red and badly blistered from the holy aura.

He was cornered.

There was nowhere left to run.

The Gold-Rank Executor began walking slowly toward him.

His flaming greatsword dragged across the dirt, leaving a long, burning trench behind it.

The intense heat seemed to suck the remaining oxygen from the narrow alley.

"Your dark magic ends here," the Executor declared.

He raised the massive greatsword above his head with both hands.

The holy flames roared.

They grew twice as large, illuminating the entire alley until it was brighter than the middle of the day.

He was preparing a vertical execution strike powerful enough to vaporize the entire dead-end alley.

"Saile!" Naicul shouted desperately inside his mind. "Get up!"

Saile tried to push himself away from the wall.

His legs refused to move.

The burn damage was too severe.

The S-Rank holy magic had temporarily paralyzed his muscles.

He gripped the Corroded Divine Blade tightly, but even he knew he could not block an attack of this magnitude.

If that flaming greatsword hit him, his EX-Rank mana core would be destroyed.

Then—

A beautiful, ringing chime echoed inside his ears.

A bright golden System screen flashed directly in front of his eyes.

Its brilliant light pushed through the blinding glare of the Executor’s holy flames.

[Notice: Skill Forging Complete.]

[5/5 Skill Shards Consumed.]

[New Skill Unlocked: Shadow Swap (Active) C-Grade.]

Saile’s eyes snapped wide open.

The knowledge of the new skill flooded directly into his mind.

He understood its function instantly.

Its limitations.

Its cost.

Everything.

"Now!" Naicul roared.

The Gold-Rank Executor brought the massive flaming greatsword down with all his strength.

A visible sonic boom cracked through the alley as the heavy blade descended toward Saile, powerful enough to split him cleanly in half.

Saile stared past the falling blade.

His eyes locked onto the dark shadow cast by the Executor’s massive body across the dirty cobblestones.

"Shadow Swap," Saile whispered.

BOOM!

Saile’s body suddenly dissolved into a patch of dark, formless smoke.

He vanished from the base of the brick wall.

At that exact moment, the Executor’s flaming greatsword smashed into the spot where Saile had been sitting.

The explosion was catastrophic.

S-Rank holy magic detonated like a massive bomb.

The dead-end brick wall was obliterated, exploding into thousands of tiny pieces of stone and sharp shrapnel.

The ground cracked open beneath the impact.

Parts of the cobblestones melted into glowing glass.

A tremendous shockwave ripped through the alley, shaking the surrounding buildings so violently that their wooden roofs groaned in protest.

The wind shrieked through the streets, carrying a thick cloud of dust and holy fire into the night sky.

The Executor stood in the center of the newly formed crater.

He lowered his greatsword slowly, breathing heavily.

His eyes traveled across the destroyed wall.

There was no trace of the boy.

No blood.

No body.

Nothing.

"The Light cleanses all," the Executor muttered.

He turned toward the main street.

Then he froze.

Saile Retrac stood perfectly still behind him.

The boy’s clothes were still smoking. His skin was covered in angry red blisters, and his breathing was ragged.

But he was alive.

By using his brand-new C-Grade skill, Saile had swapped places with the Executor’s own shadow at the exact moment the killing blow landed.

He had completely bypassed the devastating blast of holy light.

The Corroded Divine Blade rested firmly in his hands.

His left eye still burned with the piercing silver light of Naicul’s combat experience.

The Gold-Rank Executor slowly turned around.

His expression changed.

For the first time since entering the alley, genuine disbelief appeared in his cold blue eyes.

It was impossible.

An unawakened peasant had just survived—and outmaneuvered—an S-Rank holy execution strike.

Saile did not smile.

He did not boast.

He simply raised the rusted, black blade.

The ultimate equalizer was finally in his hands.

And the real fight was about to begin.
