My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly

Chapter 9: Phantom Step, The Guild Courtyard

He just wanted to leave the loud, crowded guild hall and find a quiet place to sleep.

The heavy iron doors leading out to the city streets were only a few steps away.

Suddenly, a loud slap rang through the room.

A hand wearing a polished silver gauntlet slammed hard against the thick wood of the door, completely blocking the exit.

Saile stopped and looked up.

It was the blonde noble from the testing crystal.

The boy’s face was bright red with pure, uncontrollable anger. His expensive silver armor rattled loudly as he breathed heavily.

"You are not going anywhere, peasant," the noble spat.

He glared fiercely at the silver tag hanging on Saile’s belt.

"My name is Neros. I come from a proud, S-Rank family chosen by the Holy Church. You do not just walk in here, use a dirty trick to cheat the physical exam, and steal my spotlight."

Saile sighed softly.

He was incredibly tired.

"I did not cheat, Neros. I just hit the wooden dummy. Now, please move your hand. I want to leave."

"Do not turn your back on me!" Neros yelled.

He stepped right into Saile’s personal space.

The entire guild hall went completely quiet again.

The veteran mercenaries crowded around, eager to watch a fight.

"I demand a duel," Neros announced loudly, making sure the entire room could hear him.

"Right now, in the training courtyard. If I win, you give the guild master back that Silver tag and confess you used a dark magic artifact. If you refuse, I will have the Church guards arrest you for fraud."

Inside Saile’s mind, a dark, heavy laugh rumbled like distant thunder.

"Oh, please say yes," Naicul whispered eagerly.

The ancient God sounded like a starving wolf.

"Let me out for just one single second. I will melt his shiny silver armor directly into his skin. I want to hear an S-Rank noble scream today."

"I am not killing him," Saile thought back firmly.

"And I am not giving you control."

Saile looked at Neros.

The young noble was shaking with arrogant rage.

Saile knew that if he walked away, Neros would definitely send the Church guards after him.

A fake F-Rank commoner running away from a duel looked highly suspicious.

He needed to settle this quickly and quietly, without using any EX-Rank dark mana.

"Fine," Saile said calmly.

"One duel. Just you and me. Let us go outside."

The crowd of rough mercenaries erupted into loud cheers.

They pushed the heavy iron doors open, spilling out into the dusty training courtyard behind the guild hall.

Men began shouting and throwing gold coins on the ground, placing heavy bets.

Almost everyone bet their money on the S-Rank noble.

The courtyard was a wide, open space surrounded by high stone walls.

The ground was covered in dry, packed dirt.

Saile walked to the center of the yard.

He did not reach over his shoulder to draw the rusted harpoon tied to his back.

If he drew the weapon, the dark mana might leak out and expose him.

He had to win this fight completely bare-handed.

Neros stood twenty feet away.

He drew a long, beautiful broadsword from its scabbard.

The weapon instantly began to glow with a blinding, bright white light.

Heat rolled off the blade in thick, shimmering waves.

It smelled like burning ozone and scorched air.

"I was trained by the High Paladins of the Church," Neros boasted loudly.

He pointed his glowing sword right at Saile’s chest.

"You are nothing but an F-Rank mistake. I am going to break your legs and expose your little trick."

"Less talking," Saile said.

He lowered his stance and brought his bare hands up.

"More fighting."

Neros roared in anger.

He charged forward with surprising speed.

His silver boots kicked up clouds of dust.

He gripped his glowing sword with both hands and swung it down in a massive, heavy overhead strike.

Saile did not panic.

He waited until the burning blade was just inches away from his face.

With a sudden burst of Level 10 speed, Saile planted his left foot hard and launched into a tight shoulder roll.

He dived straight under the swinging sword.

Boom!

Neros’s glowing blade slammed into the dirt.

The ground exploded instantly.

A visible, circular shockwave ripped through the courtyard, pushing a thick cloud of dust and rocks into the air.

The physical force of the S-Rank holy magic made the ground tremble violently under Saile’s boots.

Saile popped back up to his feet, totally unharmed.

"Stand still, you rat!" Neros screamed.

The noble spun around and unleashed a wide horizontal slash.

A sharp, burning wave of holy fire shot out from the blade, flying straight toward Saile’s waist.

Saile pushed off the ground and launched into a high, graceful backflip.

The wave of holy fire passed directly under him, completely missing his body.

The fire hit the stone wall behind Saile, scorching the solid rock black with a loud hiss.

Saile landed smoothly on the dirt.

He was fast, but he realized Neros’s holy attacks covered too much ground.

His Level 10 body was strong, but his legs could only carry him so far.

He needed to move faster.

He needed to close the distance without getting burned.

"Stop dodging like a coward!" Naicul yelled angrily in his mind.

"Use your EX-Rank talent! Force your body to adapt! Demand the speed you need from the System!"

Saile narrowed his eyes.

He focused his mind entirely on his legs.

He pictured himself moving faster than the wind.

He pictured stepping right through the space between them.

The System responded instantly to his intense desire.

A golden screen flashed quickly in his vision.

He felt a sudden, freezing rush of energy shoot down into his boots.

It did not feel like dark mana.

It felt like pure, raw speed wrapping around his ankles.

[New Skill Formed: Phantom Step (Active) D-Grade.]

Neros raised his sword high above his head, preparing to unleash a massive, unavoidable blast of holy light.

"This ends now, peasant!"

"I agree," Saile said quietly.

Saile activated his new skill.

He took a single step forward.

Suddenly, Saile’s body turned into a blurry, vibrating shadow.

He vanished from his spot completely.

He moved with blinding, impossible speed.

He crossed the twenty feet of dirt in a tiny fraction of a second.

To the crowd watching, it looked like he had literally teleported.

Neros gasped, his eyes going wide.

Saile appeared directly beside the noble, completely inside his guard.

Before Neros could even swing his heavy sword down, Saile dropped low to the dirt.

He planted his hands firmly on the ground and whipped his right leg around in a brutal, lightning-fast spin sweep.

Smack!

Saile’s boot slammed hard into the back of Neros’s silver-plated ankles.

The noble’s stance broke instantly.

His feet were swept entirely out from under him.

Neros flew up into the air and crashed flat onto his back.

The heavy silver armor slammed against the packed dirt with a loud, ringing crash.

The glowing broadsword flew out of his hand, tumbling away into the dust.

The holy light faded from the blade immediately.

The fight was over.

It was entirely one-sided.

Saile had not taken a single scratch.

Saile stood up slowly.

He brushed the dust off his torn tunic.

He looked down at the arrogant noble lying defeated in the dirt.

Neros stared up at the sky, gasping for air.

His chest heaved up and down in complete panic.

He could not comprehend what had just happened.

An F-Rank commoner had just bypassed his S-Rank holy magic and knocked him flat on his back with a simple, embarrassing leg-sweep.

The entire courtyard was dead silent.

The mercenaries stood with their mouths hanging open.

They forgot to cheer.

They forgot about their gold coins.

They had just watched a dirty teenager humiliate a trained noble without using a single drop of magic.

"You call that a victory?" Naicul groaned loudly inside Saile’s head.

The God sounded deeply, truly annoyed.

"You did not even draw a drop of blood. He still has his head attached to his neck. You are a terrible disappointment to me, boy."

"I won," Saile thought back firmly.

"That is what matters."

Saile turned his back on the crying noble.

He walked back into the guild hall, ignoring the stunned stares of the veteran hunters.

He pushed the heavy iron doors open and stepped out into the busy city streets of Valerius.

He was safe for now.

The F-Rank disguise was perfect.

He had his Silver Rank tag, and he had unlocked a powerful new movement skill.

He smiled slightly, feeling the cool weight of the silver tag against his side.

As he walked down the dirt road to find a place to sleep, the golden System screens updated quietly in his vision, recording his newly formed power.
