My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly

Chapter 10: Swapped Coordinates, The Heretic Hideout

The morning air in the frontier city of Valerius felt crisp and cold.

Saile Retrac tied his shiny Silver Rank tag to his worn leather belt. The metal tapped lightly against his side as he walked through the busy dirt streets.

His body felt completely rested. The raw power of Level 10 buzzed warmly in his muscles, a stark contrast to the weak, fragile frame he had possessed just a few days ago in Orali.

"I need better gear," Saile said quietly to himself.

He reached over his shoulder and touched the thick wooden handle of his rusted iron harpoon.

The heavy weapon was chipped and dented from fighting the monsters in the forest. If he wanted to survive in this harsh world and eventually return for his little sister, Avery, he needed to forge something new.

"Then go kill something worthwhile," Naicul grumbled in Saile’s mind.

The ancient God sounded incredibly bored.

"We have an EX-Rank talent. We can devour anything. Why are you walking toward the Hunter’s Guild? We should be hunting S-Rank beasts in the high mountains."

"I need Weapon Fragments and Skill Shards," Saile thought back firmly.

"I am only Level 10. I am not fighting dragons with a rusty stick. I am taking a standard Raid Quest today to gather resources safely."

Naicul let out a heavy, dramatic sigh but stayed quiet.

Saile pushed open the heavy iron doors of the Hunter’s Guild.

The hall was packed with loud, scarred mercenaries drinking cheap ale and bragging wildly about their recent hunts.

Saile ignored them completely.

He kept his head down, maintaining his F-Rank disguise, and walked straight to the large wooden quest board pinned to the back wall.

He scanned the messy parchment papers.

He did not want to draw any unnecessary attention to himself today, so he picked a very simple, standard mission.

It was an Iron-Rank Raid Quest to clear out a low-tier goblin den in the nearby rocky canyons.

Goblins were weak, but a whole den would drop plenty of EXP and minor fragments for his inventory.

It was also the perfect place to test his new Phantom Step skill on moving targets without any real danger.

Saile pulled the paper off the board and walked up to the front desk.

The guild clerk sat behind the wooden counter.

He was an older man with a tired, sweaty face.

He took the quest paper from Saile with visibly shaking hands.

The clerk completely refused to look Saile in the eyes, constantly wiping his forehead with a dirty rag.

"Just the goblin den today?" the clerk mumbled quietly, shifting his weight nervously in his chair.

"Yes," Saile answered smoothly.

"Just the goblins."

The clerk reached under his desk.

He fumbled around for a long moment before pulling out a rolled-up leather map.

He stamped it quickly with hot red wax and slid it across the wooden counter.

"Follow the red path on the map," the clerk said, his voice cracking slightly.

"It is three miles north of the city gates. Good luck, kid."

Saile took the map and nodded his thanks.

He turned around and walked out of the loud guild hall, stepping back into the bright morning sun.

He did not see the heavy leather pouch filled with shiny gold coins hiding right under the clerk’s desk.

He also did not see Neros, the arrogant S-Rank noble, standing quietly in the dark shadows near the back wall.

Neros watched Saile leave, a nasty, vengeful smile creeping onto his sharp face.

The rich noble had been utterly humiliated in the courtyard yesterday.

Now, he was paying for his revenge.

Saile left the city gates and walked out into the wild.

He decided to test his physical limits while he traveled.

He pushed off his back foot, dashing forward across the grassy plains.

He ran faster than a galloping horse, the wind whipping wildly past his ears.

When he saw a large, fallen tree blocking the dirt path ahead, he did not slow down.

He planted his boot firmly against the thick trunk and executed a flawless wall-run, taking three quick steps vertically up the rough bark.

He launched himself off the top, performing a graceful aerial twist kick into the open air just for practice.

He landed smoothly in a tight shoulder roll recovery, bouncing right back up to his feet without losing a single drop of momentum.

"Stop wasting your energy," Naicul scolded sharply.

"You look like a dancing clown."

"I am testing my balance," Saile replied, stretching his arms.

"Level 10 feels totally different. My body is so light. I need to get used to the speed before a real fight."

"It will feel much heavier when you are dead," the God sneered.

"I still say goblins are a massive waste of my time."

"Goblins drop loot," Saile insisted.

"And they travel in large packs. I can use the Endless Devourer talent on the entire den at once. I will gather enough Weapon Fragments to finally ditch this rusted harpoon."

After an hour of traveling, the bright morning sun began to fade.

The dirt path led Saile directly into a deep, narrow canyon.

Tall, jagged rock walls rose high on both sides, completely blocking out the sunlight.

Heavy, cold shadows covered the ground.

The wind blew through the rocks, making a low, hollow whistling sound that made the hairs on Saile’s arms stand up.

Saile stopped and looked down at his leather map.

The red ink line stopped right at the end of this specific canyon.

He walked forward slowly, keeping his boots light against the loose gravel.

He fully expected to see a dirty, muddy hole in the wall.

Goblins were messy creatures. They usually left disgusting piles of garbage and animal bones outside their dens.

But this entrance looked completely different.

It was a massive, perfectly carved stone archway built directly into the side of the mountain.

Thick, dead vines covered a set of heavy, ancient iron doors.

The air around the dark entrance smelled terrible.

It did not smell like wild animals.

It smelled heavily like rotting meat, dried blood, and burning incense.

"This is not a goblin den," Naicul said instantly.

His ancient voice turned sharp, serious, and completely awake inside Saile’s mind.

"The mana here is incredibly thick. It reeks of dark magic and blind, fanatical faith. Do not go in there, boy."

Saile frowned.

He gripped the wooden handle of his rusted harpoon tightly.

"Maybe the map is just old. Or maybe a stronger monster moved in after the goblins left. If the enemies in here are stronger, they will drop better loot. I need the EXP."

"Do not be a fool," Naicul warned coldly.

"I can smell the killing intent from out here."

Saile ignored the God.

He needed to grow stronger to protect himself and Avery.

He could not run away from every scary shadow.

He stepped forward and pushed his hands against the heavy iron doors.

With his Level 10 strength, he shoved them open.

They creaked loudly, protesting against the movement.

He stepped into the dark tunnel.

Bright red torches suddenly flared to life on the stone walls, lighting his path.

He walked forward cautiously.

The tunnel was wide and carved with strange, bloody symbols.

It opened up into a massive, cavernous underground chamber.

Saile froze dead in his tracks.

His eyes went completely wide.

The room was not filled with small, weak green goblins.

It was filled with over forty grown men.

They all wore deep red robes with dark hoods completely hiding their faces.

They carried heavy, curved steel swords that glowed with a sick, corrupted magic.

In the exact center of the room sat a large stone altar stained with fresh, wet blood.

They were Heretic Cultists.

Instantly, dozens of glowing red System screens exploded in Saile’s vision, warning him of the massive threat.

[Target: Heretic Cultist. Level: 40.]

[Target: Heretic Cultist. Level: 40.]

[Target: Heretic Cultist. Level: 42.]

"Level 40," Saile gasped quietly.

His heart slammed hard against his ribs.

Every single person in this room outclassed him by at least thirty levels.

"Sabotage," Naicul snarled viciously in his mind.

"That arrogant noble boy paid the clerk to swap your map coordinates. He did not send you on a quest. He sent you into a lethal ambush!"

Saile took a slow step backward toward the tunnel, desperately wanting to escape.

But a loose rock crunched loudly under his boot.

One of the red-robed men turned his head.

His glowing red eyes locked directly onto Saile standing in the entrance.

"An intruder!" the Cultist yelled, pointing his curved steel sword right at the boy.

"A spy from the Church! Offer his blood to the Old Gods!"

The entire room erupted into violent motion.

Forty high-level Cultists charged forward, swinging their heavy blades.

The sheer killing intent in the air made the ground tremble beneath Saile’s feet.

The trap had sprung perfectly, and Saile was completely surrounded.
