My System Is a Fallen God: I Level Up Endlessly
Chapter 11: Phantom Step, The Blood AltarThe heavy iron doors were shut tight behind Saile. There was nowhere to run.Forty grown men charged forward across the underground cavern. They wore deep red robes, their faces hidden behind dark hoods. They swung heavy, curved steel swords that glowed with sick, corrupted magic. The sheer killing intent rolling off their bodies made the cold stone floor tremble beneath Saile’s boots.Glowing red System screens flashed wildly in his vision.
[Target: Heretic Cultist. Level: 40.] [Target: Heretic Cultist. Level: 42.]
Every single person in the room outclassed him by at least thirty levels. A cold sweat broke out on Saile’s forehead. His Level 10 stats were strong against wild animals, but this was a completely different nightmare. "Oh, this is wonderfully hilarious," Naicul laughed loudly inside Saile’s mind. The ancient God sounded absolutely delighted. "Do you hear what they are chanting, boy? They want to resurrect the Old Gods to destroy the Church. They have absolutely no idea that the very God they worship is trapped inside the head of an F-Rank teenager standing right in front of them." "This is not funny," Saile thought back firmly. He gripped the wooden handle of his rusted iron harpoon. "They are going to cut me to pieces." "Then you better start dancing," Naicul sneered. The first wave of Cultists reached him. Three men swung their glowing blades in a wide, deadly horizontal slash, aiming directly for Saile’s neck.Saile planted his boots firmly into the dirt. "Phantom Step," he whispered.Boom! The air cracked with a loud sonic boom.Saile turned into a blurry, vibrating shadow. He vanished completely from the tunnel entrance, moving with impossible speed. The heavy steel swords smashed into empty air, throwing sparks everywhere.Saile appeared instantly behind the three men. He did not give them a single second to turn around. He dropped into a low crouch and whipped his right leg around in a rapid, forceful spin sweep. His boot slammed hard into the back of the closest Cultist’s knees. The physical force was perfect, but the result was terrible. The Level 40 man stumbled slightly, but he did not fall. The massive level gap meant Saile’s physical strikes barely bruised the man’s magically enhanced muscles. It felt like kicking a solid brick wall. Pain shot right up Saile’s leg."Too slow!" the Cultist snarled. He spun around, swinging a heavy backhand slash toward Saile’s chest. Saile pushed off the stone floor. He launched into a high, graceful backflip, soaring backward to dodge the blade. The glowing sword sliced through the air just an inch away from his nose. The dark heat from the magic singed the ends of his brown hair.Saile landed smoothly on his feet, but he had no room to breathe. Five more Cultists rushed him from the side. They raised their empty hands, firing massive, burning spheres of dark fire magic directly at him.Saile dashed toward the closest cavern wall. He planted his boot against the rough stone, executing a flawless wall-run. He ran three quick steps vertically up the rock, letting the dark fireballs explode violently against the floor right beneath him. The wind shrieked loudly from the blast, pushing a thick cloud of hot smoke and dust into the air. While hanging high above them, Saile launched into a tight aerial twist kick. He spun through the smoke, gripping his rusted harpoon tightly with both hands. He thrust the weapon downward with all his might, aiming right for a Cultist’s shoulder. Clang! The Cultist simply raised his curved sword, blocking the harpoon easily. The heavy collision pushed Saile backward through the air. He hit the ground and rolled smoothly into a tight shoulder roll recovery, bouncing right back to his feet. He looked down at his weapon. A nasty, deep crack ran straight down the middle of the rusted iron. The metal groaned loudly under the terrible pressure. "Your garbage stick is breaking!" Naicul warned sharply. "It cannot handle
Level 40 magic!" Saile gritted his teeth. He fought desperately against the frenzied fanatics. He dodged a sweeping blade by dropping into a low crouch. He twisted his hips and delivered a rapid flurry of heavy jabs directly into a man’s stomach. Bam! Bam! The punches landed perfectly, but the Cultist’s Level 40 mana shield absorbed the worst of the impact. The man just laughed a chilling, bloody laugh and kicked Saile hard in the chest.Saile slid backward across the dirt, gasping for air. He was fighting flawlessly. He was using every single acrobatic maneuver in his arsenal. But perfection was simply not enough against raw, overwhelming numbers and a thirty-level gap.The Cultists suddenly stopped attacking. They spread out quickly, forming a
tight, deadly circle around him. They raised their curved blades and pointed them toward the stone altar in the center of the room. "Offer his soul to the shadows!" the Cultists chanted together. Their voices bounced loudly off the cavern walls. "Wake the Old Gods!"Fresh blood bubbled violently on top of the stone altar. It spilled over the edges, pouring onto the dirt floor. The blood did not soak into the ground. Instead, it moved on its own, pooling together to form a massive, dark shape then a terrible, freezing wind blew through the underground chamber. The red torches on the walls flickered wildly and turned pitch black. The ground began to shake, much harder than before. It was not a magical explosion. It was the heavy, rhythmic thud of massive footsteps. From the bubbling blood and dark shadows, a giant monster stepped forward. The Cultists bowed their heads toward the beast, their chanting growing louder and faster. It was an Abyssal Hound. The monster was easily the size of a large merchant’s wagon. Its entire body was made of pure, shifting black smoke and jagged white bone plates. Three rows of razor-sharp teeth lined its glowing, toxic purple jaws. Hot saliva dripped from its mouth, melting the solid stone floor with a loud, angry hiss.A new, terrifying System screen flashed right in front of Saile’s eyes. It was bright red.
[Target: Abyssal Hound.] [Level: 45.] [Threat Level: Lethal.]
The giant hound lowered its heavy head. Its burning purple eyes locked directly onto Saile. It let out a low, vibrating growl that rattled Saile’s ribs and made his teeth ache.
"Well, this just became incredibly problematic," Naicul muttered. The ancient
God did not sound amused anymore. His voice was entirely serious. "That is a creature from the Abyss. Its raw power will snap you in half like a dry twig." Saile was totally trapped. He was exhausted, his weapon was cracking, and he was staring down a Level 45 boss monster in a room full of heavily armed fanatics. The arrogant noble’s sabotage had worked perfectly. The Abyssal Hound did not wait for Saile to move. It lunged forward.Boom! The beast moved with impossible, terrifying speed. The ground exploded behind its massive back paws. The wind shrieked as the giant monster crossed the cavern in a fraction of a second. It was a terrifying blur of black smoke and white bone.Saile’s eyes went wide. He tried to activate Phantom Step, but his tired leg muscles simply could not react fast enough. He brought his damaged, rusted harpoon up horizontally across his chest, bracing for the absolute worst. The hound’s massive, bone-plated head slammed directly into Saile.CRACK! The rusted harpoon shattered completely. Sharp pieces of old iron flew wildly into the air. The sheer physical force of the Level 45 monster hit Saile like a falling mountain.A visible shockwave ripped through the cavern. Saile was thrown violently backward through the air. He crashed brutally into the solid stone wall of the dungeon. The heavy impact knocked the breath right out of his lungs. He felt his ribs crack loudly under the pressure. He fell to the dirt floor in a broken, bleeding
heap. Hot blood poured freely from his mouth and his nose, staining his torn tunic. His vision swam with dizzying black spots.
"Saile!" Naicul yelled in his mind.Saile tried to push himself up, but his arms completely refused to work. His Level 10 physical limits were finally breached. The overwhelming odds had caught up to him. Every single muscle in his body screamed in absolute agony. He was bleeding out rapidly on the cold dirt. The Heretic Cultists laughed cruelly. They stepped forward, tightening their circle around him. They raised their glowing swords, ready to carve him into pieces for their dark ritual. The giant Abyssal Hound stalked slowly toward him. Its heavy paws shook the ground. The beast stood right over Saile, its toxic purple saliv dripping down and burning holes into Saile’s leather boots. Saile looked up at the monstrous beast. His heart beat weakly in his chest. He
could not breathe. He could not move. The golden System screen in his vision began to flicker, turning a dark, dangerous shade of red. He had absolutely nothing left in his tank. The darkness was closing in...
