Phei’s eyes narrowed while his hand tightened around the soft curve of her hip beneath the blanket. "What did you do?"
Cassiopeia leaned closer and kissed his cheek, letting her lips linger just long enough to make the evasion irritatingly effective. "You will see."
Phei stared down at the top of her head, already imagining several possibilities, each one wearing Madelyn’s face and carrying its own insurance problem. His slave possessed an intolerable amount of confidence whenever she knew something he did not, but he allowed the subject to rest. For the moment.
Once the shopping massacre concluded and Phei paid for enough bags to create temporary employment across several delivery companies, the entire group moved into the mall’s entertainment complex and conquered that too.
They raced through simulators, fought in combat arenas, fired virtual weapons, competed in archery, challenged one another across holographic tables and entered a dance game that nearly caused Jade to abandon dignity under pressure from Maddie.
Teams formed naturally, although alliances changed whenever someone began winning too often. Every game produced fresh rivalries and minor injuries to friendship, all medically survivable and expected to heal before dinner. A holographic strategy game destroyed Maddie’s kingdom within fourteen minutes after she read half the instructions, ignored the rest and attempted to govern through charisma.
When the final city burned across the display, she accused the machine of political bias and demanded to speak with whoever had programmed the enemy general.
The on another battle through two groups winners from each group eventually advanced into a final competition against the other from another group in a battle requiring speed, tactical thought, spatial awareness and enough coordination to make Phei wonder when recreation had become military recruitment with prize tickets.
Dravenna faced Maddie.
The result was murder with a scoreboard.
Dravenna dismantled her so completely that the people gathered around them grew quiet before the match had even finished. Her hands moved over the controls with calm precision, her face barely changing as she anticipated every trap, countered every attack and reduced Maddie’s strategy to debris.
When the final score appeared, Maddie remained frozen with the controller clenched between both hands. The enormous screen behind her displayed the result in cheerful colors that seemed personally designed to deepen humiliation.
Dravenna leaned back in her chair, crossed one long leg over the other and watched Maddie with jade eyes carrying a quiet satisfaction that made the defeat several times worse.
"Again?" she asked, rolling one shoulder as though the match had barely qualified as exercise.
Maddie turned her head slowly, a beautiful smile spread across her face, though it carried enough violence to make several nearby children reconsider where they were standing.
"The machine is broken."
Dravenna glanced toward the controls and gave them a dismissive tap with one finger. "It worked for me."
"It likes old women," Maddie replied sweetly, lifting her chin in open provocation.
Dravenna’s jade eyes narrowed, and the air around her tightened with the first warning of power: "Say that again."
Phei stepped between them before the entertainment centre became the latest casualty of immortal female pride. He placed one hand on Maddie’s shoulder and the other against Dravenna’s chair, smiling while measuring exactly how much trouble could fit inside two women staring at each other.
"Maddie," he said, lowering his voice beside her ear as his thumb brushed the bare skin above her neckline, "you lost beautifully. Very few women could make public defeat look that attractive."
Her eyes slid toward him. "I want a rematch."
"Dravenna will beat you again."
Maddie’s smile vanished. "Whose side are you on?"
"The side that prefers the building upright." Phei bent closer, letting his lips graze the shell of her ear while he whispered a private consolation that made heat climb rapidly into her cheeks. "Accept the loss and I will make certain you win something better later."
The fury in Maddie’s expression softened into calculation so quickly that Phei nearly laughed.
She looked at Dravenna, then at him, and a slow smile returned with far less violence and considerably more greed.
"How much better?" she asked, resting one hand against his chest while her fingertips slipped beneath the open edge of his shirt.
Phei whispered another sentence.
Maddie released the controller immediately and rose with the serene dignity of a queen generously pardoning an inferior opponent. "Fine. I shall allow the elderly one her little victory."
Dravenna made a low sound in her throat, but Phei placed himself closer before she could answer. His eyes wandered briefly over the firm strip of toned stomach exposed beneath her cropped top and open hoodie, and his attention lingered long enough for her to notice.
She crossed her arms, which only pressed the fabric tighter over her chest and created a new problem that Phei considered with appropriate seriousness.
"You are staring," Dravenna said, though the faint curve at the corner of her mouth ruined the accusation.
"I am making sure the champion survived," Phei replied, allowing his gaze to climb back to her jade eyes. "It would be tragic if that outfit killed me before I congratulated you."
Maddie rolled her eyes and pulled him away by the shirt. "Stop rewarding her for humiliating me."
Phei allowed himself to be dragged along, already aware that Maddie had somehow converted a public defeat into private profit.
The woman could be smoked before witnesses, negotiate compensation from the man who watched it happen and still leave convinced she had won the afternoon.
Her talent deserved academic study.
They ate lunch inside a private section of a restaurant overlooking Hell’s Paradise Lake and he ended lunch with three desserts despite ordering none.
Ice skating followed, and every woman joined regardless of experience. Maddie attempted spins she had never practiced, each one becoming more ambitious because people were watching and because Phei would save her before she injured herself and so did everyone else.
Natasha the Sinclair Princess had held Phei’s hand and insisted she required balance, although the way she pressed herself against his side whenever they turned suggested balance had grown soft curves and a very pleasant perfume.
Gianna and Priya the Kapoor princess clung to one another during the first ten minutes, laughing nervously whenever their skates drifted apart. Once they discovered they were surprisingly good, fear vanished and they began racing along the outer ring with enough enthusiasm to nearly flatten Brian.
Dravenna skated backward while drinking coffee from a paper cup.
Phei considered pushing her.
Then she caught him looking, raised one eyebrow and took another calm sip without breaking stride.
Phei valued his continued existence and redirected his thoughts toward women who could be safely annoyed.
