[Description: Unknown????]
[Note:Host must re-mark women who already possess the Mark and the Unmarked apart from Mistress Roxanne.]
Phei lingered on the final lines, his attention caught by the words Living Soul more than the impressive amount of EXP and Points that had just fallen into his hands. At least that explained what he had seen upon Sienna’s stomach. The little dragon born from his Mark had already become disturbingly alive after its first evolution with Roxanne, breathing beneath the skin, flexing tiny wings and occasionally shifting as though the mark itself possessed preferences about where it wished to rest.
What had appeared upon Sienna, however, had evolved far beyond that earlier state.
It had grown until it was roughly the size of a rose, the blood-crimson beneath its wings now touched by a faint pink hue, while the old obsidian slits of its eyes had disappeared and been replaced by amethyst eyes identical to his own.
And somehow, after revealing something that looked increasingly capable of developing a personality, the System had decided Unknown???? qualified as an explanation.
"Very helpful," Phei muttered. "Generations of cosmic mystery, and we have reached question marks."
A faint movement in his arms immediately pulled his attention away from the notification.
Sienna had regained enough strength to walk long ago.
With the ridiculous amount of power hidden inside that delicate body, she could probably have crossed the bedroom without touching the floor if she wanted to make a point that hie hard ravaging had only made her unable to walk for just a few moments before she recovered.
Yet she remained tucked against him while he carried her, one arm beneath her knees and the other around her back, her cheek resting comfortably against his chest while several strands of dark hair spilled over his arm.
One hand had quietly gathered a fold of the shy of her clothing between her fingers, and despite everything she had said about being perfectly capable of walking, those fingers showed no interest in letting go.
Phei’s curiosity about Living Soul quickly lost the competition.
"You may put me down," Sienna murmured but she really didnt mean it.
He glanced at her. "You’ve said that several times now."
"And somehow you remain disobedient."
"Terrible habit, my love."
Her violet eyes lifted toward him with the cold displeasure of someone accustomed to making people regret inconvenient behavior. The effect suffered somewhat because her cheek was still resting against his chest while she delivered it, and Phei’s smile widened before he could stop himself.
Sienna noticed immediately. "What?"
"Nothing."
"You are laughing at me."
"I’m smiling at my cousin,"
"That doesn’t make it any better."
"I thought it sounded affectionate."
"You’ve grown smug, Phei."
Phei considered the accusation with exaggerated seriousness. "I don’t see why the two should be mutually exclusive."
The look she gave him promised consequences, yet instead of asking to be put down again, Sienna simply rested her cheek back against him.
The tiny surrender warmed him more than he cared to admit.
He crossed the rest of the bedroom slowly, taking his time with the simple pleasure of having her in his arms. There was something unexpectedly intimate about carrying her after everything that had happened between them. Sienna had trusted him with a part of herself guarded through more than one lifetime, willingly accepted his Mark and somehow ended the night curled against him while still attempting to preserve the cold dignity of the Nether Goddess.
Yet he could feel how relaxed she had become against his chest.
Her breathing had fallen into the rhythm of his steps, her body no longer held any guarded tension, and every time his grip shifted slightly, she seemed to settle closer rather than pull away.
Phei liked carrying her.
’Far too much, probably.’
When they reached the bed, he lowered her with care, keeping one arm behind her shoulders until her head touched the pillow before drawing the covers over her. Sienna settled into the soft sheets with a quiet breath, dark hair spreading around her face until she looked almost unfairly peaceful.
Phei remained beside the bed for a moment, simply watching her.
Without the pressure of Nether rolling from her body and without the ancient stillness that sometimes settled over her whenever the goddess beneath the surface came too close, Sienna looked softer than she ever allowed herself to appear around anyone else. There was something deeply satisfying about seeing her like this, comfortable enough to let the world disappear for a while.
Sienna caught him staring.
Her eyes narrowed. "What?"
Phei smiled. "I’m happy."
"That does not answer the question."
"It does from my perspective."
"That expression is irritating."
"I’m still happy."
Sienna studied him for several seconds, clearly deciding what punishment was appropriate for a man enjoying himself too openly in her presence. Eventually she settled on intimidation.
"You do realize I am considerably more powerful than you."
Phei nodded immediately. "Very much so."
Her brows drew together, perhaps mildly offended by how quickly he accepted it.
"And you understand what that means?"
"That my wife is terrifyingly impressive?"
"It means I could break you like a twig and force whatever thought you’re hiding, out of you."
Phei blinked once, then laughter escaped him.
Sienna began to sit up, her expression suggesting she might offer practical evidence, but he leaned down before she could decide how much violence their new relationship permitted. His palm cupped her cheek and his lips met hers, stealing the threat directly from her mouth.
Her irritation survived for barely a heartbeat.
Sienna’s eyes slowly closed as her hand rose and caught the front of his shirt.
Phei kissed her without urgency, enjoying the warmth of her mouth and the way her grip tightened whenever he began to draw back. Earlier there had been hunger between them, heat and discovery and the dizzying pull of two people crossing lines neither could uncross. This was gentler.
There was no destination waiting at the end of the kiss.
He simply wanted her close, wanted to feel her soften beneath a touch that asked for nothing beyond another second.
When he finally drew away, his forehead remained close to hers.
"And yet," he murmured, unable to keep the amusement from returning, "the terrifying Goddess who can break me like a twig is the one who liked the idea of being tucked into bed exhausted."
Sienna’s eyes opened with immediate warning.
Phei recognized the danger and proceeded anyway, because survival instinct had never been among his most reliable talents.
"Where was all that terrifying power when you went limp in my hands after four rounds, hm?"
The blush arrived instantly...
...so did her fist.
It struck his chest with enough restraint to spare the furniture, which Phei considered very thoughtful of her. He still rocked backward dramatically and clutched his chest.
"Violence? Against the man who just carried you to bed?"
"Shut up."
"You’re blushing."
"Phei."
"You’re so adorable, my love."
For once, the Nether Goddess appeared to have no useful answer. She dragged the blanket upward until it covered most of her burning face, leaving only her violet eyes visible above it.
Phei laughed softly. "You know hiding makes you even cuter."
"I am sleeping."
"Your eyes are open."
The stare above the blanket sharpened.
"Phei."
"All right. I surrender."
He stepped away from the bedside, and Sienna felt the absence immediately.
That irritated her far more than it should have.
She had spent the last several minutes insisting she did not need to be carried, tucked in, kissed or treated as though she required his attention, yet the moment his warmth disappeared from beside her, the bed somehow felt larger.
