The System paused.

Phei’s mouth opened slightly.

"You don’t even know?"

For several seconds, he simply looked at the System Window before a laughter escaped him.

The situation was ridiculous, but beneath the comedy sat a suspicion he had been carrying for some time, and the System had just made it considerably harder to dismiss.

His abilities were not truly coming from the System.

At least many of them were not.

The System called them rewards because that was apparently the easiest way to present what was happening, yet more and more it appeared to be guiding him toward awakening that already belonged to his Cosmic Dragon bloodline. Certain actions, achievements and encounters opened sealed doors inside him, while the System recognized whatever emerged afterward and displayed it as neatly as its own understanding allowed.

Sometimes it knew exactly what had awakened but sometimes the Cosmic Dragon apparently handed it something incomprehensible and the great mysterious System stared at the result with Phei and collectively went:

Phei leaned back into the couch, strangely amused and strangely humbled at the same time.

"So you’ve basically been helping me awaken my own abilities."

The System did not respond.

For once, the silence felt remarkably informative.

Phei smiled faintly.

The explanation sounded almost embarrassingly simple, yet every recent change inside him made it increasingly difficult to argue against. The System was guiding, rewarding, recording and occasionally helping push open doors, but whatever waited behind those doors belonged to Phei.

His attention returned to the mission reward, where another line had appeared beneath Living Soul.

Apparently so.

The Living Soul evolution had changed the Mark deeply enough that women carrying earlier evolutions would not automatically receive the new stage. Those who already bore his Mark would need to accept it again, while women who had never received it would naturally need to be Marked for the first time.

Roxanne alone was exempt.

That part made considerably more sense.

The Mark had first developed its living quality through what happened with her, meaning whatever bond existed between Roxanne and that evolution apparently reached deeply enough for Living Soul to follow without needing another ceremony.

Phei stared at the System Window.

"So Roxanne gets the automatic update?"

Silence.

"Yes. Exactly. Thank you for confirming."

The more interesting question was why everyone else required manual installation.

It was his Mark.

...the ability belonged to him...

Surely if something evolved, the existing Marks should simply evolve along with it.

Humanity had already solved this problem with software. You did not throw away your device every time the manufacturer released new software. You pressed update, complained because it somehow required seven gigabytes, watched the phone restart precisely when you needed it most and then continued with life.

"But no," Phei muttered. "Apparently I have to personally reinstall everybody."

He paused as his expression gradually improved.

Re-marking his women personally...

Well.

Perhaps the System occasionally possessed brilliant ideas.

Phei sank deeper into the couch with a shameless little smile: "I suppose sacrifices must be made."

The System continued ignoring him.

’Rude bastard.’

Still, the instruction revealed something useful beneath the comedy.

Whatever Living Soul eventually became, the change clearly mattered. The System would not require every woman to receive the new version if the evolution were purely cosmetic. Something deeper had shifted between the previous Mark and this First Step, even if neither Phei nor the System currently understood the destination.

Phei dismissed the reward panel and finally looked at the numbers sitting behind everything else.

The mission had added another two hundred thousand EXP and Points.

He had been hoarding both for far too long.

His Points now sat at 580,000, while his EXP had climbed to 720,000, enormous totals Phei had somehow allowed to accumulate while sprinting from one disaster to another without spending much of anything.

The Shop remained unavailable anyway.

To unlock that, he still had to finish taming his hot, rude neighbor and Victoria.

He was halfway there.

Soon.

Very soon and Phei would finally discover what sort of ridiculous merchandise the System considered worth selling to someone already wandering around with Soul Energy, Void powers, a living Dragon Mark and enough seduction abilities to qualify as a public safety concern.

He rubbed his hands together once.

"That is going to be expensive."

Probably catastrophically expensive.

And knowing the System, there would undoubtedly be one item sitting near the top that cost an insulting number of Points and possessed a description so tempting it might as well personally insult his financial discipline.

Still, that problem belonged to future Phei.

Tonight already had enough work waiting.

Living Soul had introduced another mystery. Eira was somewhere retrieving an unnamed ancient friend. Several people needed to be hunted before morning, and Phei had somehow reached this point without properly reviewing his Status after Sienna had rearranged half of it.

He settled deeper into the couch, let out another long breath and lifted his gaze toward the empty air before him.

"System."

The familiar blue radiance gathered again, filling the dim lounge with cold light.
