My Taboo Harem!

Chapter 1198: What Could Go Wrong

Half of one, anyway.

Phei still had no idea what a Nirvana’s Core actually did, which was slightly inconvenient considering the System clearly considered half of it worth offering as a major reward. More interestingly, the mission information revealed that the other half already existed somewhere inside the Coffer.

That simplified the evening beautifully.

Someone needed to keep Danny alive while Phei dealt with the Coffer. Once the Heavenchilds and Maxtons lost their stolen treasury, Phei could anonymously expose their betrayal to the remaining Legacy Families, collect the reward for saving Danny and then open the Coffer himself to retrieve the missing half of Nirvana’s Core.

Simple.

’A little theft, a little rescue and little anonymous destruction of a centuries-old political alliance.’

Then perhaps he could finally discover why the System was handing him half of something called a Nirvana’s Core before sending him to steal the rest.

Phei leaned back into the couch, staring at the mission list while his smile slowly returned.

Not difficult at all, what could possibly go wrong, huh?

Of course, the moment Phei allowed himself to think that tonight sounded simple, reality immediately presented the small problem of everything that could possibly go wrong.

According to Eira’s intelligence, the Coffer would not simply be loaded onto some truck and driven through Paradise with two nervous Heavenchild accountants guarding the doors.

Danton himself intended to accompany it during transportation, which already elevated the operation from dangerous theft to perhaps Phei should update his will before leaving the Hell’s Paradise.

The bastard was sitting comfortably at the Saint Stage, somewhere around ten entire cultivation stages above Phei’s miserable little Master Stage, and unlike Phei, Danton possessed the experience to actually use every drop of that power properly.

Then there were the Chained.

Apparently the five elves Eira had discovered beneath the Heavenchild estate were only the beginning of the army of Chained the Maxtons possessed.

Phei had initially assumed the Maxtons possessed those five World Transcendents because five imprisoned powerhouses already sounded sufficiently insane for one family.

Eira had since ruined that comforting assumption.

During her investigation of the Maxton and Heavenchild bases of operation, she had sensed several other Chained beings hidden beneath powerful concealments, enough that the number participating in the Coffer transport could reach ten or perhaps even more.

The elves themselves were apparently staying behind.

Wonderful.

That meant the ones going with Danton were the people Eira knew even less about.

Phei rubbed his face slowly.

"At least none of them are Lesser Gods like the Witch."

There. Positivity and a cute healthy mindset.

The World Transcendent Realm was only around fourteen cultivation stages above his Master Stage, after all, and he might be facing ten of them at once while a Saint Stage Progenitor supervised the entire operation.

Very manageable.

"I like the odds," Phei murmured.

He lasted perhaps two seconds before snorting at his own lie.

Who the fuck was he kidding?

The odds were terrifying.

Actually, terrifying had clocked out several cultivation realms ago. If ordinary fear saw this mission waiting ahead, it would probably glance at the World Transcendents, notice Danton standing behind them and quietly submit a resignation letter.

Phei leaned his head against the couch and stared toward the ceiling.

"Mhhm... I wonder who Eira is going to meet."

Whoever this mysterious old friend happened to be, Phei sincerely hoped they could help keep his women safe.

Relying upon a complete stranger to protect his family sat badly with him, especially when he had spent so much of his life learning that the easiest way to lose something precious was to trust another person with it.

Still, this was Eira.

He trusted her judgment.

If she believed this person could be relied upon, Phei would give that judgment the respect it deserved until he had a reason to do otherwise.

Besides, they had no idea what the Heavenchilds and Maxtons intended to do once the Coffer began moving. Phei knew enough about Danton to understand that the bastard would never place every piece of his attention on the treasure itself.

Danton was petty, vindictive and experienced enough to know exactly where anyone against him or even Phei’s attention would be once the heist began.

Phei could hardly blame him for that.

This was war.

War did not come with polite appointments:

Your enemy did not send a message asking whether Thursday afternoon was convenient for the destruction of your family. They struck when your attention was elsewhere, when your defenses were stretched thin and when the choice between protecting one thing and saving another would hurt the most.

And Danton had been doing this for far longer than Phei had been alive.

Much, much longer.

Phei hated admitting it, but hatred did not make facts disappear.

Danton was a fucking Progenitor whose existence stretched back hundreds of thousands of years, perhaps millions depending on exactly how old the bastard truly was. Phei had nineteen years of experience, much of which had involved school, family trauma, beautiful women and trying very hard not to murder people before adulthood.

Danton had watched civilizations grow old.

There was no comparison.

Age did not automatically make someone wise, of course:

Phei had met enough elderly idiots to know wrinkles occasionally developed without wisdom receiving the invitation. But Danton was not stupid, and hundreds of thousands of years spent surviving enemies, wars and whatever primordial nonsense his original life had contained meant his experience stood on a scale Phei could not pretend to match.

He needed help.

As much of it as he could get.

That admission irritated his Dragon pride somewhat, but pride was considerably less useful when surrounded by ten World Transcendents and a Saint.

As for his women inside the villa, Phei was placing his trust in Sienna and Dravenna.

Sienna required no explanation. Even while recovering from the sex marathon, the Nether Goddess was something Phei would rather have defending his home than attacking it, and their Dual-Nether Souls and the Harem Mark meant he would feel if something catastrophic reached her.

Dravenna was a different mystery.

Phei still had no idea exactly how powerful the Jade Dragon truly was. The woman probably had spent an irritating amount of time smiling mysteriously whenever the subject approached her cultivation, which appeared to be an ancient tradition among powerful people who had collectively decided straightforward answers were beneath them.

Still, every instinct Phei possessed told him she was terrifying, and he trusted her to protect everyone here if the night suddenly decided Hell’s Paradise needed its own battlefield.
