Phei’s gaze finally reached the missions gathered at the bottom of his Status Window, and the first one was enough to drag a long sigh from him.
[Main Mission 2: Omni-Primordial Path]
The mission had sounded wonderfully straightforward when the System first presented it. Find the Original Progenitors tied to the Legacy bloodlines, subdue them and place them beneath his authority until the very beings who were supposed to become part of his reckoning instead became pieces of his own growing power. Kyle had already proved the path was possible, and looking at the mission purely from the perspective of rewards and future strength, Phei would have been an idiot to complain.
Unfortunately, people had an irritating habit of being attached to memories.
Marking the remaining Progenitors was not going to be nearly as easy as he had once imagined, and if Phei were completely truthful with himself, the thought of eventually standing in the same room with Marcus and Danton as his slaves still made something ugly crawl through his stomach.
Slave or lackey, obedient or broken beneath his authority, he could hardly stomach looking at either bastard now.
Imagining Marcus calmly standing somewhere inside Infinity Chaos Hotel awaiting orders made Phei want to throw the entire hypothetical future through a window, and Danton somehow managed to inspire an even more creative selection of violent architectural solutions.
It was shallow.
Phei knew that.
It was also ridiculously short-sighted to let rage over the past interfere with a Path whose rewards might affect his future on a scale he could barely comprehend.
Anyone sufficiently wise would probably tell him to swallow his hatred, use every useful enemy and remember that turning a monster into property was a far more complete victory than simply killing him.
Wonderful advice.
They could follow it themselves.
Who the hell was not petty sometimes?
Phei had never applied for sainthood, and even if someone secretly submitted the paperwork on his behalf, the committee would probably spend five minutes examining his Status Window before politely setting the application on fire.
Marcus and Danton had crossed lines inside him that logic could explain but could not erase.
Perhaps one day the Omni-Primordial Path would force him to reconsider what victory against them should look like.
Tonight, however, the entire mission felt much more emotional than practical whenever those two names entered his thoughts.
Phei sighed again and dismissed the irritation before it could settle too deeply.
He already knew what he wanted to do to both bastards.
’Whatever consequences follow can come afterward and file their complaints in person. Supreme Immortal enemy or not, I do not care!’
His eyes moved to the oldest mission still sitting inside his System.
[Main Quest: Conquer Paradise’s Women]
Phei stared at it and almost laughed.
Who would have thought his very first Main Quest would survive this long?
When the System originally handed it to him, Paradise had seemed impossibly large, its women scattered through families, businesses, estates and social circles he barely understood.
Now he could look back and see how absurdly far he had travelled.
The names that had once seemed distant were now woven throughout his daily life, occupying his thoughts, fighting with one another, kissing him, threatening him, stealing his clothes, demanding attention and generally turning peace into a historical concept.
And somehow only Adriana and Victoria remained between him and completing the first Main Quest of his life.
Phei’s lips curved.
They were there now, weren’t they?
No reason to build some grand philosophy around the final stretch.
Adriana was already dangerously close, whatever dignity she still used as fortification becoming less convincing every time they met, while Victoria was... Victoria.
That one required its own headache medication.
Still, two women.
Phei could work with two women.
He moved on before his imagination decided to begin planning either conquest while he was supposed to be preparing for an entirely different crime tonight.
The next mission looked considerably less cooperative.
[Mission: Research and learn more about the Original Tongue, speech and writing]
Phei stared at it with far less confidence.
He genuinely had no idea where to begin.
Eira remained his best source, which was an unfortunate sentence considering even she knew barely a sliver of the Original Tongue.
’Asking Eira to teach me the entire language would be like finding someone who knew three words of ancient Greek and appointing them Dean of Classical Linguistics because they pronounced Zeus convincingly.’
She could help him recognize pieces, perhaps explain what little she had heard across old eras and forbidden places, but speaking the Original Tongue properly was another matter entirely.
Writing it sounded even worse.
The few traces Phei had encountered carried meaning in ways ordinary language did not, as though each symbol contained more than a sound or simple definition.
Somehow, he would have to learn.
Just apparently without a teacher, textbook, dictionary or conveniently surviving ancient Dragon willing to run weekend lessons.
’Excellent educational environment.’
Phei reached the mission that made every other problem on the list temporarily look domestic.
’The Coffer.’
According to everything Eira had uncovered, the Heavenchilds and Maxtons were preparing to steal the collective treasury the Legacy Families had spent centuries filling with wealth, treasures, artifacts and resources they’d come with to Earth from the wider World of Powers.
Phei had already understood that the amount inside must be obscene.
These were families whose mortal businesses alone controlled fortunes capable of moving entire Earth’s economy, and many of the treasures deposited into the Coffer came from eras when paper money would have been considered a particularly fragile joke.
Eira’s estimate had still managed to make him stare.
According to her, the accumulated resources inside that treasury could sustain an entire realm more than five time the size of Earth for at least a decade.
Perhaps longer.
Phei had asked whether she was exaggerating.
’She had looked offended.’
That was generally how one knew Eira was serious.
If her estimate came anywhere close to reality, allowing the Heavenchilds and Maxtons to seize the whole thing would be catastrophic:
They already possessed people with bloodlines, hidden cultivators both on high cultivation realm or lower, ancient allies perhaps too, treasures and enough influence to reach into almost every corner of Earth.
Give both families a treasury capable of feeding a realm for ten years and who knew what they could build from it?
Armies could be raised with all that, forbidden bloodline awakened and sleeping monsters supplied with enough resources to stop sleeping altogether; who knew.
They would become terrifying.
’Potentially unstoppable.’
Which naturally meant Phei’s mission was to steal the Coffer from the people trying to steal the Coffer.
’Hey, its a very respectable work.’
The System apparently believed theft became heroic when conducted against other thieves, and Phei saw no reason to challenge such elegant morality.
There was another part to the mission that made the whole thing considerably more entertaining. Once the Coffer was safely removed from Heavenchild and Maxton hands, Phei needed to anonymously expose what those two families had attempted to do.
His grin slowly widened.
That part? He liked!
The Legacy Families were already coming apart:
Their old alliance had been wearing thinner every year, resentment accumulating beneath the surface while the approaching Destined Day gave each family more reasons to prepare for itself rather than the whole.
Distrust had become normal, old grudges had started breathing again and everyone was already wondering what would happen when the structure finally collapsed.
Then imagine telling them that the Heavenchilds and Maxtons had secretly emptied the treasury they had all spent centuries filling.
A treasury carrying wealth large enough to sustain a realm.
Phei could barely imagine the outcome.
’Actually, that is a lie.’
He could imagine parts of it extremely well, and every version was beautiful.
Whatever fragile alliances remained would be thrown straight into a furnace. Families that had tolerated each other for centuries would suddenly start calculating exactly how much had been stolen from them, how long the betrayal had been planned and whether every Heavenchild smile across the last several decades had simply been preparation for robbery.
Because when wealth and such unimaginable treasures that reached that magnitude, blood ties, ancient agreements and shared history developed an unfortunate habit of becoming dramatically less sacred.
And if the Legacy Families truly turned against the Heavenchilds and Maxtons...
Phei’s grin became almost indecent.
Oh boy.
He almost wanted popcorn.
Almost.
There was still another mission tied into tonight, and this one carried a name rather than a treasury.
Danny Maxton.
Phei focused on the mission to save him and studied the rewards again.
There were two.
’The first is hidden behind question marks, which means either the System genuinely does not know what it is yet or it has once again decided to cosplay as a mysterious omniscient being whose greatest joy came from watching me argue with punctuation.’
The second reward was much more specific:
