That qualification sat heavily in his thoughts.
Phei could possess the most ridiculous soul-sealing ability ever handed to a nineteen-year-old pervert, but it meant absolutely nothing if the people he intended to use it against could erase him before his fingers reached their sleeves.
World Transcendents were hardly idiots either.
The first one might underestimate him, and Phei was almost counting on exactly that.
What would a being fourteen cultivation stages above Master Stage think when some young Dragon appeared in front of them? Perhaps they would laugh, perhaps they would allow him closer because the difference in cultivation looked too enormous to deserve caution.
Then Phei would touch one of them, and that World Transcendent would suddenly become an empty body while its soul disappeared into whatever private heaven it had spent several thousand years refusing to discuss.
Everyone else would understand immediately.
Once they saw what physical contact with Phei could do, there would be no second easy target.
They would keep their distance and start trying to kill him from afar, probably with enough enthusiasm to compensate for their first mistake.
Phei leaned deeper into the couch, eyes narrowing as his thoughts accelerated. He did not need to punch them, wound them or somehow overpower their defenses. Hunger Touch asked for something much smaller: a tap against an arm, two fingers brushing a shoulder, his palm touching clothing for the briefest instant.
That was all.
Obtaining that instant was the problem.
These were beings who could probably perceive him moving before his muscles had properly informed the rest of his body what they intended to do. Trying to rush a World Transcendent as a Master Stage cultivator would be comparable to swimming through a tsunami made from several million blades while relying upon the magnificent defensive equipment known as mortal skin.
Phei frowned. "I need something that lets me appear beside them, touch them and disappear before their instincts have enough time to turn me into decorative blood mist."
Speed would never be enough by itself.
Even his absurd physical attributes meant little against such a ridiculous difference in cultivation.
What he needed was movement they could not properly anticipate, something immediate enough to ignore the distance between where he stood and where he wanted to be.
Then his thoughts slowed.
Wait.
He already possessed something along those lines.
His element was Void-Ice, and portals had become almost natural to him by now. He could open one in front of himself and emerge somewhere completely different without crossing the physical distance between both locations.
Phei’s eyes sharpened.
Could he use that?
Appear behind one World Transcendent, touch them and immediately retreat through another portal before anyone reacted?
The beginnings of a smile appeared before logic murdered it:
"No... too obvious."
A portal still required time to open. Even if the transition itself happened almost for a second or two, a World Transcendent’s perception would probably sense the disturbance in space before Phei fully emerged. Once they understood his method, they could attack every forming portal and surround every spatial disturbance with enough power to make whatever came through regret having parents.
Worse still, Phei needed that portal to form close enough to his target for the touch to matter.
Against one surprised enemy, perhaps he could get away with it. Against alerted World Transcendents, repeating the trick would become fucking suicidal.
Unless he could make the transition so quickly there was practically no opening to anticipate.
Unless he did not need to emerge through a conventional portal at all that needed to open first and open once more behind his enemy or near.
Phei’s thoughts halted as his gaze lowered toward the Status Window still floating before him. His eyes moved over Void-Ice, Hollow Touch and Minimal Void Sense before settling upon one particular ability he had somehow overlooked while trying to invent a solution from scratch.
For several seconds, he simply stared at it.
Then the corner of his mouth slowly rose.
Of course.
How the hell had he forgotten about that?
He had spent the last several minutes trying to invent an ability he already possessed.
Phei leaned forward, eyes fixed upon that single section of his Status Window while the beginnings of an absolutely terrible idea assembled themselves inside his head.
"Yes," he murmured with a growing grin. "I do have exactly what I need."
While Phei could create portals almost whenever he pleased, sometimes across distances so absurd that he still had no idea where their actual limit rested, portals possessed one rather embarrassing weakness.
They were far from instantaneous.
Creating one was incredibly fast, and stepping through allowed him to arrive somewhere else almost immediately afterward. For ordinary travel, that was already an outrageous power to possess.
Crossing cities, returning home, reaching someone in danger or avoiding the universally miserable experience known as an airport had become laughably easy whenever Phei knew where he wanted to go.
Combat, unfortunately, cared very little about convenient transportation.
A portal still had to be formed, opened and physically crossed.
However quickly those three things happened, there remained a sequence between intention and arrival, and against cultivators moving at speeds far beyond ordinary perception, a sequence was precisely how one got his handsome head separated from his equally handsome shoulders.
Phei could already picture the magnificent battle strategy.
Enemy attacks. He dramatically creates a portal. Enemy watches him step toward it, respectfully waits for him to finish travelling, perhaps offers encouragement while he crosses the threshold...
Yeah.
Absolutely fucking not.
Portals were transportation for now as far as his utilization of them was.
Excellent transportation, admittedly, the sort that could bankrupt several airlines if Phei ever became entrepreneurial enough, but transportation all the same. What he needed in battle was something closer to true teleportation, movement where his body vanished from one position and appeared somewhere else before an opponent properly registered that he had moved.
Fortunately, whatever Sienna’s sacred essence had awakened inside his Void appeared to have given him exactly that.
Phei brought the Powers section of his Status Window back into view.
Once, the entire thing had been painfully simple.
[Powers: Void-Ice {Infinity Control}, Primordial Blood]
Infinity Control had never been a separate power sitting beside Void-Ice.
It represented the state his Void-Ice had reached, practically the second-last stage within the first great rank through which a power could evolve, where his authority over the element had become so complete that intention and manifestation were separated by little more than thought.
Primordial Blood had never reached anything comparable.
After Sienna, however, the entire structure of his powers had changed.
[Powers: Void (Void-Ice {Infinity Control}, Hollow Touch Lv.1, Void Step Lv.1, Minimal Void Sense Lv.1), Primordial Blood]
Phei stared at the line for several moments, because that was the real evolution hiding behind everything else.
His power was no longer simply Void-Ice.
It was Void.
Void-Ice had become one expression beneath something far larger, now sitting beside Hollow Touch, Void Step and Minimal Void Sense as different manifestations of the same source.
"So my actual Powers (elements) are Void and Primordial Blood now... that’s fucking COOL!"
Strange, actually.
Void-Ice had existed with him for so long that Phei had naturally assumed it represented his entire elemental power. Apparently he had spent time staring at one branch of his actual power while mistaking it for the whole tree.
Interesting.
Potentially terrifying.
And completely useless tonight if the three new branches turned out to be decorative cosmic nonsense with impressive names.
Phei glanced at the painfully visible Lv.1 beside each ability and sighed.
"System. Show me all three."
Three blue windows unfolded before him.
[Hollow Touch Lv.1...]
