My Three Classes Are Supposed to Be Average
Chapter 36: Power Moves Quietly"Thank you. I think the issue of my Mana leakage has been fixed. I did not feel any Mana leaking while I used the Skill," Isabelle said, still looking at her palm as tears rolled down her face.
Hearing this, Max looked at her face and noticed she was sobbing. However, he was not surprised by her tears, as Alicia had also cried out loud yesterday evening. Thinking back, Max had not cried when his own issue of activating a Skill was finally fixed. Although he had felt a great joy of achievement, crying was not a part of it. He wondered why that was.
"That is good to hear, Isabelle," Max said. "Although the healing was free, I am currently doing this while expecting something from everyone as a payment."
"I will be participating in the upcoming Leaders Head Competition. I want you to support me by casting your vote for me for the Diplomatic Affairs Head position," Max requested.
Even though his actual goal would be taken care of by the mere [Salvation] Skill, that did not mean he no longer wanted to become the Diplomatic Affairs Head. As he had guessed earlier, the people plotting against him would come at him with full force. Thus, he had to ready himself to stand firm and push them back. To achieve that, he must secure a good position; merely being the number one Academy's Student would not be enough.
While he was thinking about these matters, he suddenly felt someone hug him. Startled by this sudden action, Max looked up, only to see Isabelle gently hugging him, her hands coiling around his neck. Max stood silently. He did not do anything, thinking that reacting would make things awkward. Therefore, he simply let her do as she wished.
"Thank you!" she said again, her face close to his ear.
"It is not a problem," Max simply replied.
After a moment of silence, she let go of him. She then adjusted her dress, wiped her face, and returned to her normal self.
"Regarding the Leaders Competition, I will definitely try to vote for you." Isabelle said, looking directly into his eyes.
Max simply nodded his head, still in a daze from the hug. Afterward, she said a final goodbye and left the section.
As soon as she left, someone entered and sat on the cot. However, Max was currently lost in thought over what she had said before leaving.
'I will definitely try to vote for you,' not 'I will definitely vote for you.'
Why had she used the word 'try'? Max was dumbfounded by her words. Had he not provided a great help to her life? Yet, she would only 'try' to vote for him.
"Dude, are you ready?"
While he was in his own thoughts, the voice dragged him back to reality. Sitting in front of him was the youth who had demanded to be healed first because he arrived first. Shaking his head, Max tried to clear the thought of that weird wording from his mind.
"Okay, tell me your issue. But before that, are you willing to vote for me in the upcoming Leaders Head Competition for the Diplomatic Affairs Head position?"
Max was slightly disturbed by Isabelle's cryptic answer. In fact, he had not expected it, especially since she had even cried while thanking him, only to suddenly say she would 'try.'
"So this is the payment i must pay for curing my issues. I heard correctly, then," the youth said.
"What do you mean?" Max was confused.
"I mean, when I first heard someone was healing incurable diseases for votes, I did not believe it at first. But it turned out to be true," the youth said.
"Let us see... the Diplomatic Affairs Head position," he pondered, but suddenly hissed as if a problem had arisen. "That position will be difficult for you to win, even if you try this tactic."
"What do you mean?" Max asked urgently, taken aback by the youth's speculation.
Had he missed something regarding this topic? He already knew that the other two positions were highly sought after by people. However, as far as he could think, the Diplomatic Affairs Head position was the least sought-after, with less competition among high-ranking students. Even Nobles would not consider this position, as noble heirs were mostly lazy, or were they?
Suddenly, something clicked in his mind. Those noble families, those vicious bastards who tried to become powerful inside the Kingdom, would not be that lazy.
When this thought came to his mind, it automatically shifted to Isabelle's words. She was also from a noble family, specifically one of the Dukes who ruled beneath his own. Her family would also be trying to become the next Grand Duke of the Western Land. After all, who would not want power in their hands?
Thus, he was quite certain that Isabelle was also trying to compete for the Diplomatic Affairs Head position. Other than this scenario, there was no way she would say 'I will try' to a person who had helped her immensely.
"I mean, that position is very significant for many people who joined this academy. There have been instances where people joined specifically to become the Diplomatic Affairs Head," the youth revealed.
"You must be joking!" Max said with a bewildered expression. Was this position truly that powerful?
"Come on, dude. You are the sole son of a Grand Duke; eventually, you will inherit the title for yourself. Then, look at us. We are small families trying to survive day-to-day in this world where power could put you down at any time. Therefore, we must constantly try to become influential among others; otherwise, we will be left behind in this grand political landscape," the youth explained, detailing the struggle of the small noble families trying to survive.
The story has been illicitly taken; should you find it on Amazon, report the infringement.
"So, are you also trying to participate?" Max asked, seeing that the youth knew the importance of the position.
"Well, my family insisted that I do so, even though they knew I would not win, especially for the Diplomatic Affairs Head. However, gaining higher votes boosts your image among other families, even if you lose the competition," the youth explained the situation he was currently in.
This was definitely news to Max. Did this position really play such a major role in wider politics?
Suddenly, he pulled back the cloth curtain covering them and looked outside, seeing that Moon was still doing what he had asked of her.
"Moon," he called out.
He suddenly remembered that Moon was the first person to mention the Leaders Head Competition to him. However, she had not said anything regarding the difficulty of winning this position.
Suddenly, a thought surfaced in his mind before she even approached him. Yet, he quickly discarded it. If that were truly the case, he would have already known about it.
"What is it, Max? I am currently busy," Moon said with an irritated expression.
Now that he noticed it, she had been behaving like this towards him since the morning. What was going on?
"Moon, did you register your name for the Leaders Head Competition?" Max asked.
This was the exact thought that had occurred to him earlier, but he had been reluctant to believe. After all, if she had registered, she would have told him, or so he thought.
"Who told you that?" Moon asked, a look of surprise appearing on her face.
"No one told me; I simply thought to ask. For which position did you register?" he asked.
"That..." Moon's voice faltered.
"Did you register for the Diplomatic Affairs Head position?" Max pressed.
Surprise was clearly apparent on Moon's face. She had not told anyone that she had secretly registered her name. How did Max know about this?
"How do you know that?"
"I merely guessed it."
Moon simply stood there, fidgeting with her hands as if no words came to her mind. This was definitely an awkward situation for her. She should have informed him about her registration.
"Okay, it is not a problem. We will talk about it later. You can continue your work," Max said. He then closed the curtain and shifted his focus back to the youth.
"Let me tell you something. Almost all of the top 50 students will compete for this position, and I would not be surprised if it extends to the top 100," the youth said. "Even students placed in the top 150 will register their names for the sake of their families. You know how it is being noble hair, right? After all, you are the only son of a Grand Duke."
Max nodded his head without giving much thought to what the youth said. He could not relate to these people, as his family had always been very gentle toward him. They had never pushed him beyond his limits. All of the sheer pressure he faced came solely from himself. After seeing his family members' care, he felt he should not disappoint them. Thus, he pushed his limits on his own accord, rather than being forced by his family. Therefore, although he could understand what noble heirs would go through in their lives, he had not witnessed it firsthand.
"Okay, let us drop the topic. If possible, try to vote for me," Max said, merely asking for the sake of asking before moving on to the main topic. "Tell me about the issue you want fixed."
"Well, you see, i awakened Spearman. When I was young, I had an accident that broke my elbow. Even though it was healed by an Elixir, and I can use a spear properly, but I have always felt that my elbow makes me less of an expert. So, I just want to check with you to see if you can fix it and discard that felling" the youth explained.
Hearing about this childhood accident, Max was surprisingly less shocked than earlier. This was the third case he was going to heal where an issue had occurred because of a childhood incident. Perhaps the world had yet to discover what was wrong with children consuming Elixirs. He might have to talk to someone who possessed knowledge regarding this matter.
"Do not worry, I will fix the issue. Let us wait for a few more minutes until my Mana pool recovers to 100%," Max said. He then sat silently, concentrating as he observed the surrounding Mana.
"If you are seriously planning to compete for that position, you may have to look out for a few people," the youth suddenly said.
Hearing this, Max shifted his gaze to look at him.
"Do tell," Max said.
"There are a total of three... no, a total of four people who will be your main competition. All of them are from prominent families within this very capital city, where they work directly under the King," the youth said.
'Four families from the capital? Is he referring to the people who placed in the top four of the individual rankings?' Max thought. As far as he had heard from the gossip, the names in the top ten were all associated with the Student Council Head and Disciplinary Committee Head positions.
"The first family is [Atterton]; their family head works under the King on the advisory committee. The second family is [Malkovich]; they also work on the advisory committee. These two families hold the highest authority in the capital, just below the King. Without their knowledge, nothing will move," the youth explained.
"But I did not see these names in the Dungeon Expedition Rankings. These family names were not even placed in the top 20 list." Max was confused. If these noble heirs were truly so important and powerful, why did he not see their family names on the ranking list?
"Well, you are the sole son of a Grand Duke, but you lack political knowledge. Only people like me, who come from small families, try desperately to show off in order to be noticed by these big families. Power moves in the shadows. Therefore, these people never explicitly show their desperate desires; however, they always get what they want eventually," the youth explained how things worked among the noble families. Of course, people with true power never showed off. Only small families tried hard to get noticed.
"Since becoming a King's Adviser is a very difficult thing to achieve, these families start their power-grabbing activities right from their first year at the capital's number one academy. Thus, it will be very difficult to gather votes when competing against these people," he continued to explain.
"What are the other two families?" Max asked. He wanted to know who these people were in order to make a decision on whether to enter this power struggle against the heirs of these powerful families.
"The third family is the [Guinness] family. They are bankers, handling all financial-related matters for the King. They are crazy rich; they can do whatever they want, even buying all the votes of the other small families and commoners."
"Last but not least is the [Verbeek] family. They handle weapons for the Kingdom. They are also a powerful family, equal to the Guinness family."
"So, just think about how difficult the competition will be for that position. You may have to work hard just to get a few votes. Doing this healing will not yield any results. Even if they promise their vote to you, eventually, when pressure comes from their own families, they will cast their votes for them."
"Hey, you can at least try. At the very least, you will get into the top 10 rankings of the competition's vote bank. That will boost your name, as well as your Grand Duke family's name," the youth explained, detailing all the things Max was going to face if he were to compete for that position.
Max, who had been silently listening to these things, realized that his Mana had reached 100%. He would have to take his time to decide on what to do regarding this matter. He could not make a decision without thinking it through.
"Lie down on the cot," Max said, activating his Skill.
