My Three Classes Are Supposed to Be Average
Chapter 37: A Seat at the TableAfter healing the last student, Max exited the infirmary around 5 in the evening. He felt tired, having constantly replenished his Mana Pool to heal them. However, upon seeing the benefit he obtained from a single afternoon, that mere tiredness flew away.
Today, he had healed a total of 22 students, fulfilling his promise. Through the constant usage of his skill on real people, his Mana Channeling technique had increased greatly. Out of all the benefits, he was most happy about the Skill Proficiency.
[Salvation] Skill Proficiency: 12%
The skill proficiency had increased by 9% in a single day; it was real growth. If he were to increase this proficiency only through regular practice, it would take at least a week's time or more to achieve what he did today. With great joy in his heart, he was ready to meet the kid he had promised to heal. Because he had an hour of time left before the appointed time, he could use that time to relax and take some rest.
Feeling beaten, he went directly to the canteen to have some beverages. He ordered a smoked coffee. It carried a refreshing feeling, giving the same effect as an energy-replenishing potion but without the side effects. Soon, the rich, smoked coffee arrived in a thick ceramic mug as smoke swirled upwards. Just looking at it gave a refreshing feeling. Max took a sip, the bitter taste touching his tongue. As he drank the fantastic beverage, Max nodded in agreement; it was exactly as he expected.
Meanwhile, somewhere in the Teachers' building, some commotion was happening.
The Head Teacher was currently sitting at the head table, with a big desk laid before him. Chairs were arranged on both sides of the long desk. On those chairs sat the Teachers of the Head Department, having an intense discussion on a particular topic.
"I say we let the world know officially. It will give a huge boost to the image of our Academy, and to us as well," one of the Head Department Teachers suggested.
"Our Academy doesn't need an image boost. We are number one in the Capital, and even in the Kingdom," another argued against the suggestion.
"It is not about image, but it is about honesty. If we conceal this news, it will leak one way or another, and people will look at us like we are traitors. Especially the King's Chamber," another pointed out his thoughts.
"What we do and don't do doesn't concern anyone, even the King's Chamber. Are you suggesting we should be afraid of the King's Chamber?" another insinuated a different meaning to the argument.
"Everyone, please calm down. This news has already leaked, and everyone in the Kingdom has already received the news, if not beyond the Kingdom. So, it doesn't matter what decision we make; no one has the rights or guts to ask questions," another Teacher said.
"Even if we are ready to officially release this news on behalf of the Academy, we cannot do it on our own. We may need to inform the Grand Duke. You all know how he operates when things do not agree with him, especially the kid's mother. So, I suggest we summon the family before we make any decision. They must have been waiting for the Academy Head Teacher's call," a Teacher who sat at the end of the desk suggested as he looked at the Academy Head Teacher.
Hearing this, everyone darted their eyes to the Academy Head Teacher as well. The Academy Head Teacher simply sat looking blankly at the desk, lost in his own world of thought. Suddenly noticing the silence, he came back from his thoughts and looked around at their faces.
"Let's just keep things as they are. We do not need to officially reveal the news, nor will we acknowledge the people who heard the rumors. Let the kid just do what he wants. I don't want him to become a political piece," the Academy Head Teacher finally said.
Hearing this, a few Department Head Teachers nodded their heads as if they agreed with the Academy Head Teacher. A few were silent, but a few shook their heads, disagreeing with the decision of the Head Teacher. However, they could not suggest or insist on doing what they wanted, so they all kept quiet.

"Sorry, my mother wants me to participate in this competition. You know how things work, right?" Moon said.
"Well, apparently I don't, but you don't have to apologize to me. I didn't know this Head position was this highly sought after. I was unaware of it, so I was a little surprised, even thinking I would win easily," Max said as he gulped down his remaining coffee.
"How come you didn't know the significance of that position? Didn't you come from the Grand Duke's family, and did your mother not instruct you on what you have to do?" Moon was taken aback by Max's ignorance.

Max fell silent at that question. Indeed, his mother did not instruct him on anything. She simply told him to work hard and take care, which was what she usually told him. Maybe his family did not have any big agendas or ambitions in their lives, such as annexing the nearby land and ruling that as well. His father was usually not interested in ruling the land because it was boring. That was the main reason why he had announced Max would inherit the title once he turned 18, ready to step down at his young age. Usually, those who held the title would rule until they were on their deathbeds before finally giving up their titles. However, his father was different.
"Okay, if you want to participate and truly want to get a huge amount of votes that will help you and your family, I will step down from the competition and campaign for you," Max suddenly said.
"What, are you crazy? You have a clear chance to place at least top three in the vote bank. That would put your name out in the real world among people everyone wants to get noticed by. This is your chance to shine." Moon was shellshocked after hearing Max's sudden suggestion.
"Do you want my support or not?" Max did not argue against her, simply asking.
"You must have gone crazy after using your skill too many times today. Go take a rest and relax your mind. We will talk tomorrow morning." Moon stood up while shaking her head, still unable to believe Max's decisiveness.
Max did not stop her. He simply stared at the ceramic coffee mug, lost in his own thoughts.
As he sat at the table alone, students started to arrive following the end of their practical session. They were all tired and exhausted, so they came to have something to relax. Among those students, a particular student entered the canteen with a group of people walking closely behind him.
Upon entering, he looked around the first-year hall. His eyes noticed a particular table by the wall. Catching his gaze, a guy who stood behind him whispered something to him. After hearing this, an amusing smile appeared on the student's face.
The student moved towards that particular table, and the others moved along with him. He navigated past all the tables and came to a halt in front of the table where the sole person sat.
"Hello, fellow student Maximus Bransford," the guy called out.
Hearing the call, Max shifted his concentration away from the mug. There, he saw a group of people standing in front of him. He noticed the guy who stood at the front of the group, who was the one that had called his name.
"Hello, what's up?" Max said, seeing these strangers coming to talk to him as a group. Were they here for the competition campaign? he thought.
"I heard a lot of rumors and deeds about you over the last two days. So, I just came to greet you. My name is Alvin Guinness," the guy introduced himself.
"Hello Alvin. My name is Maximus Bransford, you can call me Max." Max instantly recognized the family name, which was still lingering in his head.
*So this guy must be the heir of the Guinness Family I heard about, Max thought to himself.
"Please, sit if you want," Max offered.
"No problem, but currently, I came here to ask for your support in the upcoming Leader's Head competition," Alvin said.
"Oh, I am extremely sorry, but I am also participating in that competition. So, I may not help you," Max said.
"You fool, what are you talking about? Be grateful the request came directly from Young Master Alvin himself! First of all, stand up when you are in front of him. Second, do not argue back. Withdraw your name from participating and do the campaign for the Young Master. He will do the needful for you!" Suddenly, a guy who stood beside Alvin exploded at Max after hearing his refusal to the proposal.
Max was taken aback. He suddenly realized what their intention was, and he remembered which family this Alvin came from. They were here to buy him and the votes he had painstakingly gathered.
Actually, thinking about what the guy he had healed told him, even the top 150 ranked people would register their names to participate. By doing so, they gained big benefits like this; people came to buy their participation and their gathered votes as well. Those heirs of small families gladly gave up their participation and did the campaigning for these big families.
While Max was lost in his own thoughts without saying anything, the guy who had just spoken readied himself for another volley of words. However, he was suddenly stopped by Alvin raising his hand in a signal. Seeing this, the guy's face turned red in rage. He wanted to reprimand Max some more for the disrespect he had just faced, but he had been stopped.
"See, at the end of the day, you will not win. Trust me, your little trick of trading heals for votes won't work. You had better join hands with me and benefit, rather than lose the competition."
Surprisingly, Alvin did not get angry. He simply mentioned that Max's way of gaining the students' votes by healing them would fail. This meant he would buy those people with money or with power. Those from ordinary families would fall for power, and those from small noble families would fall for money along with power.
Although his father was the Grand Duke who ruled a large part of the Kingdom, he doubted his father would have equal authority in the King's Chamber as these people's families. As far as he knew, his father's authority would be one notch lower than these families, especially those who were part of the king's Advisory Committee. These people held more power and authority over the overall Kingdom, whereas his father only held a part of the Kingdom.
"Think about it and give your good answer tomorrow to my friend here," Alvin said calmly, pointing to the guy who was still angry at Max.
After saying that, Alvin and the group left Max's table. Max received glares of contempt from all of Alvin's lackeys. They were in great anger over the lack of respect Max had shown Alvin and his refusal of the proposal.
Max did not bother with these people. He was not from some powerless, small noble family that could be subdued by a mere power and little intimidation. He was the only son of the Grand Duke of the Land of the West.
So, he didn't bother these people confrontation as he stood up from the table, it was the appointed time to meet the kid.
