Chapter 389
"....?!"
"...."
"Yo-You are alive?!" Lincoln shouted in shock as he stared at the three figures kneeling before him.
Kai... Trisha... and Felix.
"Ser-Sergeant Lincoln?!" the three uttered in surprise at the exact same time.
Lincoln remained rooted to the spot as he stared at the trio.
His mind spun in confusion and disbelief while his gaze swept over them again and again, almost as if trying to convince himself they were truly standing before him.
"How is this possible? You all were swallowed inside the re—"
Before he could finish his sentence, Kai instantly pushed himself to his feet.
The next moment, he let out a groan of pain as he clutched his bleeding side.
"Sergeant, we don’t have much time to explain. Prepare yourselves!"
Lincoln’s brows shot upward.
’Prepa— wait... Are beasts co—’
His train of thought was abruptly interrupted as the three teens leapt backward just in time for the first human cocoon to shoot out of the gate and crash toward the ground.
"Yikes. That will hurt." Felix closed one eye.
Soon, more and more cocoons came flying out of the gate at remarkable speed.
Not wanting the humans trapped inside to smash into the ground, Felix sprang into action.
He darted from side to side with astonishing agility, catching each cocoon before it could collide with the pavement.
"Co-cocoons? What’s th—?!"
"Help pry the cocoons open now!" Trisha shouted urgently.
"...."
The Militants and even the Aspirants instinctively turned toward Lincoln.
Seeing how carefully the three teens were placing the cocoons on the ground, it was obvious that whatever was inside wasn’t dangerous in the slightest.
"Go."
The single command was all they needed.
Everyone except Berg and Lincoln rushed forward to help pry the steel cocoons open.
"He-Healers! We need healers now!" Trisha shouted once more.
Confusion spread across everyone’s faces.
No one truly understood what was happening.
Pushing his questions aside for the moment, Lincoln raised a finger to the communication device in his ear and was just about to call for healers when—
"Sir!" one of the Militants shouted, shock evident in his voice.
Lincoln froze.
"Bea—?"
"There are humans trapped inside these cocoons!"
"Humans?!"
One by one, Felix continued hopping around like an oversized rabbit, catching the incoming cocoons before gently laying them beside the others for the Corps members to crack open.
"Listen, get healers down here now!" Lincoln barked into the communication device.
The moment he finished giving the order, he rushed forward himself to help pry apart one of the steel cocoons.
"Come on, Kai. You need to sit down before you lose too much blood," Trisha urged.
The Legacy simply shook his head.
"I’m fine."
"...."
Berg remained rooted to the same spot, not moving a single muscle as he watched the chaos unfolding before him.
His fingers trembled while his gaze remained fixed on Kai and Trisha’s backs.
’Ho-How? How the hell did they survive for so long? After they got sucked in, I contacted my family and found out just how deadly a Red Gate is. Yet they survived? How? How? After all this time... why the hell are they back now?!’
He forced himself to calm down.
His trembling fingers slowly curled into fists as tiny sparks of flame danced between them.
’... If they’re alive... does that mean that peasant is too?’
His teeth gnashed together as he watched the humans being rescued from the cocoons.
Yet his attention remained fixed on the gate, which was still spitting out more cocoons, though far fewer now and at a slower pace.
’No... He’s weak. He’s surely weak, so there’s no way he could survive a Red Gate. I understand that Kai and Trisha somehow managed to survive... but he can’t... no! If he does...’
The flames around his clenched fists intensified.
’I swear nobody is going to stop me from taking his life today... right here.’
His killing intent silently surged as his eyes remained locked on the swirling gate.
....
Within three to four minutes, the cocoons stopped coming.
Due to how urgent Lincoln’s command had been and the fact that the healers were already on standby a few metres away, it didn’t take long for them to arrive.
The sound of hurried footsteps came from behind as a few healer-type Metas rushed forward with someone leading them.
A female, to be precise.
Her flowing purple hair cascaded down her back, while her black eyes held a calm yet focused gaze. Her face was framed by a pair of round glasses, which she occasionally pushed higher up the bridge of her nose.
The buttons of her white shirt strained under the pressure of her generous chest, threatening to snap loose at any moment.
This was the Corps’ personal healer, Erin, and the four others behind her were Aspirants who possessed strong or somewhat useful healing abilities.
"Check them, Erin," Lincoln commanded as he pointed toward the unconscious humans who had been rescued.
By now, the cocoons had stopped coming.
But Felix still remained poised and ready for whatever might come flying out next.
"Here, sit carefully." One of the Aspirants gestured toward Kai after noticing that he was bleeding.
"I-I’m fine, just che—"
"No. It’s my duty as a healer in training to care for all my patients, so sit down." The girl ordered sternly.
Kai stared at her for a few seconds before sighing and lowering himself onto the bare ground.
The girl crouched in front of him, her hands glowing with a soft white light which she hovered over the boy’s wound— watching as flesh slowly knitted together at a decent pace.
The other three healers and Erin moved among the rescued humans one after another, making sure to administer as much healing energy as they could.
That was after confirming through Felix that they were all alive.
Erin moved with practiced efficiency, administering medicine where her ability wasn’t needed and using her healing power where it was.
Lincoln stood to the side, watching everything unfold with a bleak expression.
Soon, two figures shot out of the gate and Felix leapt forward to catch them safely.
He moved a little farther away and gently placed them on the ground.
These two were an unconscious Van and Caster.
Kai immediately looked toward the gate, his hands clenching tightly as anticipation filled his heart.
Then Chloe stepped out next.
But the moment she emerged, her legs gave out beneath her due to the overexertion of her ability.
Blood continuously flowed from her nose.
Erin immediately left what she was doing and rushed toward the girl.
Without even moving her away from the gate, the healer activated her ability and began treating her right there and then.
"Ra-Ray? Where’s he?!" Kai asked, a fierce light shining in his eyes as he looked toward Chloe.
Berg unconsciously stepped forward from where he had been standing upon seeing more and more people emerge from the gate.
He wanted to know if He was out yet.
And the moment he moved closer was when Kai asked his question.
However, due to her weakened state, Chloe couldn’t give a verbal response.
Instead, she slowly shook her head.
Berg’s lips instantly curved into a knowing smile.
’Ha. Good riddance.’
