Chapter 390
The residents of the city, who had all been running away from the gate toward the nearest shelter, stopped a few dozen metres away the moment they saw the Corps members arrive.
So they stayed to watch the cocoons flying out of the gate, and they were all stunned.
Seeing that no beasts were attacking, they decided to remain where they were and watch everything unfold.
"Yo-You all managed to survive a Red Gate? How?" Lincoln couldn’t hide his shock behind his professional mask any longer.
By this time, about half of the unconscious trapped humans had already woken up.
— Wh-What’s happening?
— Wh-Where are we?
— SPIDERS! HELP, SP— HUH?!
— SAVE U— What?
They all shouted at once, drawing the attention of the Corps members.
"Calm down. Calm down. You are all safe," Erin said, her voice carrying such warmth that it soothed the panicked crowd almost immediately.
’Spiders?’ Lincoln mused inwardly as he turned to glance at the cocoons.
— Wh-Where are we?
"You are all back in Alcatraz."
— Alcatraz? We-we’re in Alcatraz? Woah! But weren’t we on a beast planet before that-that—
The man shuddered at the memory of the accursed Red Gate that had suddenly appeared out of nowhere and swallowed them all whole.
Kai was fully healed by now, his gaze sweeping across the panicked humans.
But that wasn’t what he was searching for.
He heard a few familiar groans, prompting him to push himself to his feet before staggering through the crowd of frightened survivors.
Soon, he found himself crouching in front of Van and Caster, who were both slowly coming to.
The Corps members were doing their best to calm the rescued humans, who were gradually waking up and shouting in panic.
Slowly but surely, the boys’ eyes fluttered open.
Kai smiled softly, but tension still lingered in his hands as he feared they might still be under the Spider Queen’s influence.
"Ka-Kai?" Van called out in his usual girly voice.
The Legacy turned to look at Caster as well.
The Legacy was now sitting upright, his head throbbing as though someone had slammed a truck into his skull.
"What happened?"
"Are yo-are you both fine? Do-do you hear any commands in your heads whatsoever?" Kai asked anxiously.
Trisha and Felix walked over to stand behind the handsome Legacy as he questioned the two.
"Commands?" Van asked with a raised brow before slowly shaking his head.
"On the contrary, I have this banging headache. Why?"
"What about you?" Felix asked with a faint snarl as he turned toward Caster.
The Legacy massaged his temples for a few seconds before shaking his head with a slight groan.
"Just like he said, I have quite the annoying headache."
Kai looked at the two before a relieved smile slowly spread across his face.
"Thank goodness our gamble paid off."
Van raised a brow.
"Gamble?"
Then he looked around for a brief moment.
"Hang on... where’s Ray?"
Kai’s expression tightened for a second before he slowly stood up with a sigh.
Holding out his hand, he gestured for Van to take it.
The genius inventor did, allowing Kai to gently pull him back to his feet.
By now, the ninth minute had already passed, and the Corps had finally managed to calm the survivors.
Lincoln moved from one person to another with practiced professionalism, gathering as much information as he could from each survivor.
Even so, he made sure not to approach those who were visibly too shaken to answer questions.
Pulling out a tablet, he carefully documented each survivor’s encounter one after another.
Meanwhile, Erin continued examining everyone, making sure she hadn’t overlooked any hidden injuries during the initial treatment.
By the time she finally finished, she let out a quiet breath.
She was beginning to feel the strain of constantly using her ability.
Folding her arms across her chest, she slowly scanned the city while silently hoping there wouldn’t be any more surprises waiting for them.
The same place that had endured a gate break a while back and faced immense destruction had, for some reason, been restored to its former state.
Every major complex and building that had been destroyed had been rebuilt with such astonishing speed that they were now fully functional once again.
And now, with the false threat of another gate break happening, the residents had fled quite far away.
"Wow. That’s a lot," Lincoln mused silently.
"How long has it been now?" Caster quietly asked Kai.
The short summary of the events leading to their escape had already been given to both him and Van.
This was to explain Ray’s absence.
As he heard what his best friend was currently going through, Van’s jaw tightened in pain.
’The same thing as what he went through in the underground world?’
"Tenth minute. Th-the gate should be closing any moment from now," Kai replied, a hint of tension creeping into his voice as he stared at the swirling gate.
"Co-come on, Ray. Come forth already. Do-Do you want to abandon me in this accursed world? Come on already," Van whispered under his breath.
His hands curled into fists, his nails digging painfully into his palms in frustration.
Deep down, he was already beginning to blame himself.
If he hadn’t fallen under Nebula’s influence, Ray wouldn’t have chosen to stay behind and fight the Spider Queen.
They would have all escaped safely without his best friend being trapped inside that damned world.
The gate crackled violently, arcs of blue lightning dancing across its entire surface and drawing everyone’s attention back to it.
It began floating higher and higher above the ground, its form distorting and trembling as though it were struggling to remain stable.
Then, it started shrinking at an astonishing rate.
Berg’s smile widened even further.
He wasn’t even trying to hide it anymore.
’Yes. Yes. He’s not surviving this. Hahaha! Good fucking ridda—’
"AAAAAAAAH!" A loud shout echoed from above, and then,
Whoooosh—!
A figure burst out of the gate with such incredible speed that, within a second, he slammed into the ground, kicking up a thick cloud of dust and loose debris.
It happened just in the nick of time as the gate vanished from existence almost instantly afterward.
"Shit. That hurt....I think."
The dust slowly settled, revealing the figure as he calmly stepped out of the fading haze.
The moment his frame came into view, Van’s, Felix’s, and Kai’s eyes widened in disbelief, and they shouted in unison:
"RAY!"
Berg’s face fell...
...and so did his hands.
