Chapter 410
The top brass of the Aspirants were finally showing why they had earned both respect and fear on the battlefield.
The very same Aberrants that had once terrified them beyond reason were now opponents they could contend with.
Not effortlessly...
But with growing confidence.
Weaving between a relentless barrage of punches, Kai twisted his body with practiced precision before pushing off the side of a nearby building.
BOOM!
Glass exploded outward as he launched himself into the air.
A long crystal pole materialized within his grasp, gleaming beneath the sunlight.
Without hesitation, he hurled it toward the Aberrant’s head with every ounce of strength he possessed.
The creature reacted instantly.
Tilting its head to the side, it allowed the crystal pole to whistle harmlessly past.
Alas...
That had been exactly what Kai wanted.
Sharp crystal spikes suddenly burst from the sides of the spinning pole.
Crack! Crack! Crack!
The spikes slammed into the side of the creature’s head, punching several bullet-sized holes through its rocky armor.
Blue blood sprayed into the air.
The Aberrant skidded backward several heavy steps, blood dribbling down the side of its face as its yellow eyes locked onto Kai, who landed gracefully on the ground.
Spinning the crystal pole around his fingers like an extension of his own arm, the handsome Legacy flashed the creature a confident smirk before shooting into the air once more.
The Aberrant wasn’t about to stand around waiting.
It exploded forward with frightening speed.
Each thunderous step shook the ground beneath its feet as it closed the distance in the blink of an eye.
Its gigantic leg rose high into the air before crashing downward like an elephant attempting to crush an ant beneath its foot.
Kai immediately dove aside.
Sliding across the ground, he drove the crystal pole into the asphalt, using it to stop himself from skidding any farther.
One palm slammed onto the ground.
Instantly...
A dozen crystal spears erupted violently from beneath the street, tearing upward toward the Aberrant.
The creature immediately vaulted backward in an attempt to evade the deadly barrage.
But before it could create enough distance...
The earth suddenly came alive.
Chunks of asphalt split apart as hardened earth wrapped tightly around the Aberrant’s legs, pinning the towering creature in place.
Kai spared a quick glance toward where the assistance had come from.
Three Aspirants were crouched low on the ground.
Their palms remained firmly planted against the earth while sweat trickled down their faces from the strain of maintaining the restraint.
"Ohoy! The hell are you waiting for?!"
Kai nodded gratefully.
Spinning the crystal pole once around his body, he kicked off a massive chunk of debris and shot toward the trapped Aberrant.
The creature roared angrily.
Its gigantic claw swept toward him with enough force to split a truck in half.
Kai’s VMS boots hissed to life.
He leaned sharply backward, allowing the claws to slice past his face by mere inches.
A burst of static echoed through his comm device.
"Kai, the heart is in its left shoulder!"
’Huh? Ray?!’
Before Kai could react further...
A devastating uppercut surged toward him.
Without hesitation, the crystal pole rapidly expanded, reshaping itself into a towering crystal shield.
He planted it before himself at an angle.
BOOOM!
The impact rang like a gigantic bell.
Instead of absorbing the full force, the angled shield redirected much of the blow, sending Kai sliding backward without launching him into the distance.
Right on cue...
The crystal spears from earlier finally caught up.
One after another, they buried themselves into the Aberrant’s neck, thigh, leg, and right shoulder.
Kai’s sharp eyes followed the final spear.
Just as it was about to pierce the creature’s left shoulder...
The Aberrant instinctively twisted its body.
’Oh.’
"Thanks, buddy," Kai replied through his comm device.
Using the Aberrant’s fully extended arm as a springboard, Kai planted one foot against the massive fist before forcefully pushing off.
He spun gracefully through the air before landing atop a nearby building.
The gigantic creature hurriedly turned around.
Its enormous frame moved surprisingly fast despite its size.
The moment it caught sight of Kai sprinting across the rooftop...
It swung its elbow forward.
BOOOOM!
Glass burst apart.
Concrete exploded outward.
Nearly half the building crumbled beneath the overwhelming impact.
But...
Kai was already gone.
Appearing directly behind the creature, he swung the crystal pole with all his might.
CRACK!
The weapon smashed into the rocky armor protecting the Aberrant’s neck.
Fragments of hardened stone scattered into the air as a large section of the armor chipped away.
The creature instantly spun around.
Its left fist tore through the air.
Kai merely smirked.
Vaulting above the incoming punch, the crystal pole dissolved before reforming into a crystal longsword within his grasp.
With a determined battle cry, he brought the blade crashing down.
SLASH!
The sword carved deeply into the creature’s arm, drawing a loud roar of pain from the gigantic monster.
Its right hook followed almost instantly.
The punch roared toward Kai’s ribs with frightening speed.
Pressing down with both feet, Kai kicked off the Aberrant’s arm like a launching platform.
He shot skyward like an arrow, narrowly avoiding the devastating blow.
Landing lightly atop the creature’s fully extended left arm, Kai felt the force of the missed punch tear through the empty air beneath him.
The violent shockwave rippled outward with such overwhelming force that even the surrounding air seemed to tremble beneath its might.
Dashing across the outstretched arm, Kai rapidly closed the distance between himself and the creature’s shoulder.
Sensing that the human had already uncovered its secret, the Aberrant panicked.
With a furious roar, it swung its massive claws toward the boy’s back.
Kai didn’t even spare the incoming attack a glance.
His eyes remained locked on the target before him.
Feeling the claws tear through the air like knives through butter, his crystal longsword emitted a faint crystalline sheen.
Then...
Impact.
BOOOOM!
The gigantic claws slammed into Kai’s back with crushing force, carrying enough power to split his body clean in half.
Alas...
To the creature’s horror, its claws failed to penetrate.
A concentrated layer of crystal armor had already formed across Kai’s back, shimmering brilliantly beneath the impact.
Crack! Crack!
Tiny fractures spread across the crystal plating, but it held.
Instead of injuring him, the tremendous force blasted Kai forward at an even greater speed.
The crystal longsword instantly shifted, elongating and thickening until it transformed into a massive crystal spear.
Without the slightest hesitation, Kai hurled it with every ounce of strength in his body.
BOOOOM!
The sound barrier shattered beneath the spear’s terrifying speed, leaving behind a visible ripple in the air.
The Aberrant barely had enough time to widen its eyes.
CRACK! SPLURT!
The crystal spear rammed into its left shoulder with devastating force, smashing apart the crystal casing protecting its heart before bursting clean through the other side.
Blue blood erupted into the air like a fountain.
The creature let out a deafening scream that echoed across the battlefield.
Its gigantic body swayed left and right for a brief moment before finally toppling to the ground.
BOOOOM!
The street trembled beneath its enormous weight.
Kai landed lightly atop the fallen Aberrant.
His chest rose and fell steadily as he gazed ahead with calm determination reflected within his amethyst eyes.
’If it’s just One-Spined Aberrants, we can manage. I have faith in myself and the others.’
Lowering his gaze toward his hands, he slowly clenched them into fists.
’... We aren’t like we were a few months ago. We’ve all changed. We’ve all grown stronger, especially after everything that happened in the Red World. We can do th—’
A burst of loud static suddenly exploded inside his ears.
Not only his...
Every Aspirant on the battlefield heard it.
The comm devices crackled violently before Mina’s panicked voice rang through them.
"Guys! You all should be careful. I-I—"
"What is it, Mina?" Lincoln barked with a deep frown while narrowly weaving around an Aberrant’s claw strike.
"—I’m finally getting visuals on the Aberrants in your area. It’s not just One-Spined Aberrants. I can count at least twenty Two-Spined Aberrants amongst them. And... and..."
"...And what, damn it?!" Lincoln demanded.
"I can’t see it directly, but according to the sensors, I’m detecting an even more powerful lifeform hidden inside the mother ship. Whoever is engaging the mother ship should be careful. I feel like this isn’t going to be—"
Ray wasn’t listening anymore.
His head snapped upward toward the sky.
Van, clad in his completed mech suit, was still battling the gigantic mother ship.
So far, he had destroyed more than half of the emitters.
Even so, the relentless barrage of laser beams pouring from the remaining weapons made it increasingly difficult for him to finish the job.
’Damn it! This is going to become tougher soon.’
Kai cursed inwardly.
Yet the revelation failed to shake his resolve.
Tightening his grip around his crystal weapon, he immediately sprang back into battle.
They could still do this...
...Or so he thought.
