Chapter 415
If elegant destruction could be given a face...
It would be Jack Kyre’s.
From the moment he made his entrance, the head of the Kyre family moved with such overwhelming speed that even the powerful Aberrants struggled to keep him within their sights.
Tracking him was impossible.
One moment...
He was here.
The next...
He had already appeared somewhere else.
And every appearance...
Every single step...
Was accompanied by the death of another Aberrant.
Meanwhile, the members of the Iron Corps stationed at the shelter hurriedly escorted the civilians to safer areas.
The warning had reached them a little too late.
No one had expected the invasion to spread all the way to the shelter so quickly, and by the time they reacted, casualties had already begun mounting.
There hadn’t even been enough time to evacuate everyone to another shelter.
Besides...
Which other shelter was large enough?
This was one of the biggest shelters in Wall Steel.
A refuge capable of housing thousands of homeless civilians safely.
The remaining shelters simply didn’t possess that kind of capacity.
So instead...
The Corps members focused on moving the civilians as far from the battlefield as possible.
While they did that...
Every Aberrant fixed its attention on one man.
Jack Kyre.
The figure who vanished and reappeared like a phantom.
Brilliant white crescents flashed through the battlefield one after another.
Each slash claimed another life.
On this battlefield...
Neither the One-Spined...
Nor even the Two-Spined Aberrants...
Could stand against him.
Among the invading force, the One-Spined Aberrants vastly outnumbered the Two-Spined ones.
The same pattern seemed to repeat itself throughout every battlefield across Wall Steel.
Perhaps it was because the One-Spined were the weakest among their race.
Or perhaps there was another reason.
Jack neither knew...
Nor cared.
His only concern...
Was eliminating as many Aberrants as possible.
His figure flickered in and out of existence like the flame of a candle dancing in the wind.
Every movement was clean.
Every strike was precise.
Every slash landed on a vital point with frightening accuracy while carrying enough destructive force to tear through their rocky defenses.
It was as though...
The air...
The earth...
Even the world itself...
Couldn’t keep up with Jack’s presence.
The head of the Kyre family was displaying exactly why he belonged among the Big Four Legacies.
His mastery of combat had long surpassed ordinary human limits.
Only the other Legacies could hope to compare.
Even then...
Although the Big Four were often spoken of as equals...
Each family excelled in different fields.
In terms of raw physical might...
The other three families surpassed the Blue family.
But when it came to technology, intelligence, and weapons powerful enough to threaten even fellow Legacies...
The Blue family stood unrivaled.
Despite their status...
None of them had ever truly tested their strength against one another.
There simply wasn’t a place on Alcatraz capable of containing such a battle.
If two members of the Big Four fought seriously...
They could very well reduce the entire planet to ruins.
The humans knew it.
The Big Four knew it.
Even the Aberrants knew it.
That was precisely why...
The moment the Aberrants realized who stood before them...
A part of them wanted to retreat.
Since birth...
One lesson had been drilled into every Aberrant warrior.
Never provoke one of the Big Four...
Unless you belong to the Big Five.
Even so...
None of them fled.
Instead...
Their blood boiled.
Their hearts pounded.
Battle.
Bloodshed.
The chance to challenge overwhelming strength.
Those desires ran through every Aberrant’s veins.
Despite their intelligence...
They were warriors at heart.
So they remained.
Even as Jack slaughtered them one after another.
Even as each passing second claimed another comrade.
They refused to retreat.
Claws ripped through the air.
Massive tails swept across the battlefield.
Gigantic feet pulverized the shelter grounds and surrounding buildings.
They couldn’t see Jack.
But they continued attacking regardless.
Hoping...
Praying...
That eventually one strike would connect.
Alas...
Aside from the destruction they inflicted upon the battlefield itself...
The dust they raised...
And the rubble they scattered...
Jack Kyre remained completely untouched.
Leaping from rubble to rubble, another Abberant’s head was consumed by white-hot flames before melting away.
"Thanks for the smokescreen, morons," Jack’s voice slithered through the battlefield like a snake.
He blitzed through the thick dust, deliberately avoiding dispersing it.
Instead, he used the swirling smoke as cover, darting from one shadow to the next while taking down more and more Abberants. Every few seconds, another massive body crashed to the ground with an earth-shaking thud, sending tremors rippling across the shelter.
The humans cowered in fear.
They couldn’t see nor hear much.
The only thing they witnessed was Abberant after Abberant collapsing... headless.
It was obvious the flashy figure who had arrived was responsible for this phenomenon.
Who he was?
They had no idea.
They hadn’t heard the Abberants’ earlier revelation.
Grabbing a tail that rocketed toward him, Jack’s lean muscles flexed beneath his coat as he effortlessly hoisted the towering Abberant above his head.
With a smooth, controlled swing, he hurled the colossal creature into another.
BOOOOM!
The two gigantic bodies ploughed through a pair of skyscrapers, reducing floors of reinforced concrete and steel into collapsing heaps of rubble.
The buildings folded inward before crashing to the streets below.
As though that wasn’t enough, a white cadence erupted around Jack’s outstretched arm.
The strange energy condensed into a blinding sphere aimed directly at the tumbling Abberants.
BOOOOM!
A colossal ball of white flames surged across the battlefield with crackling force.
The inferno swallowed both Abberants before they could scream.
Their rocky bodies melted almost instantly.
The collapsing structures vanished with them, dissolving beneath the overwhelming heat until nothing remained but glowing debris.
Whirling around like a spinning spear, Jack flicked his fingers.
Whooosh!
Hundreds of crescent-shaped white slashes tore across the battlefield in every direction.
The remaining Abberants found themselves collapsing one after another.
Heads separated from shoulders.
Limbs scattered across broken streets.
None of them...
One-Spined.
Two-Spined.
None of them posed even the slightest challenge.
Almost simultaneously, the heavily damaged Mother Ship finally lost the last of its balance.
With a deafening roar, it spiraled from the sky before crashing into an empty street.
The impact sent a wave of dust and shattered asphalt exploding outward.
Moments later...
The entire vessel erupted into towering white-orange flames as thick columns of black smoke billowed toward the heavens.
Jack slowly straightened his posture.
His back remained turned toward the burning Mother Ship as he casually dusted invisible dirt from his coat.
A warm smile rested on his face.
Gigantic Abberant corpses littered the battlefield around him.
Several had fallen toward the shelter that housed the civilians, yet each massive body had somehow missed the structure by mere metres.
He had eliminated every creature with frightening precision.
Aside from the damage caused during the initial invasion, the shelter remained untouched.
Such was the power...
...of one of humanity’s Big Four Legacies.
Jack Kyre.
Within barely five minutes...
...he had eliminated well over a hundred Abberants without even approaching his full strength.
"..."
"Ah... that was impressive, I must say."
A calm voice echoed several metres behind Jack.
His smile faded.
He spun around sharply.
Only to find a lone figure walking out of the burning Mother Ship completely untouched by the raging flames.
Smoke curled around its silhouette, obscuring its features as it advanced with slow, measured steps.
Jack’s shoulders stiffened.
A faint frown creased his face.
’Something is wrong...’
’I can feel it.’
’Something about this thing is fundamentally wrong...’
"But I shouldn’t really be surprised," the figure said calmly while continuing forward. "You are one of humanity’s strongest powerhouses... one of the Big Four."
The smoke gradually parted.
’An Abberant?!’
No...
That wasn’t right.
Unlike the towering nine-metre-tall Abberants, this one was... smaller.
Standing barely three metres tall, it lacked the overwhelming size of its brethren.
Yet...
Its presence eclipsed every single one of them.
Its body was lean, stripped of the excessive muscle mass common among ordinary Abberants.
Every movement carried unnatural grace.
Its compact frame gave the unsettling impression that every ounce of strength had been compressed into something infinitely deadlier.
The brown rock armour covering its body appeared smoother and far more refined.
Each plate fused seamlessly into the next as though sculpted by nature itself.
Rather than looking rough and uneven, the armour possessed a polished metallic sheen that hinted at durability far beyond ordinary stone.
Its elongated arms ended in razor-sharp claws that gleamed like obsidian.
Each finger looked capable of tearing through reinforced steel with effortless precision.
Its yellow eyes burned with frightening intelligence.
Unlike the mindless savagery displayed by lesser Abberants, those narrow pupils moved with purpose.
They calmly studied everything before them.
Calculating.
Evaluating.
Judging.
Then there was its head.
Instead of the jagged rocky plating worn by the others, a large dome-like crown rested atop its skull.
Perfectly rounded.
Almost regal.
Yet it wasn’t a helmet.
The strange formation was a natural part of its body, seamlessly fused to its flesh.
Intricate grooves stretched across its surface, pulsing faintly with eerie crimson light.
Behind it...
Six long bone spines protruded from its back.
They arched outward like the legs of a monstrous spider before curving toward the heavens.
Each spine was thick.
Jagged.
Yet unnaturally smooth.
Veins of crimson light flowed through them in slow rhythmic pulses, illuminating the creature with every heartbeat.
Even the air around those six spines shimmered, unable to withstand the terrifying pressure radiating from them.
Though its feet were far smaller than those of ordinary Abberants, they were no less terrifying.
Dense layers of hardened stone wrapped around them like natural greaves.
Each step sank into the earth.
Deep fractures spread across the ground beneath its feet.
Smiling, the Abberant pointed a claw toward Jack.
Its yellow eyes gleamed while the drones hovering overhead slowly focused their cameras on it.
Before anyone could react, one of the Corps members standing behind the creature caught sight of its back.
His entire body trembled violently.
He staggered backward.
One step.
Two.
Three.
Until his legs gave out beneath him.
He crashed onto the ground, staring at the creature with horror.
His lips quivered as he counted again...
...and again...
...just to make sure his eyes weren’t deceiving him.
"A-A-A-It’s..."
"It’s a fucking Six-Spined Abberant!"
The Abberant’s grin widened.
"The name is Orvak."
Its eyes gleamed with excitement.
"And now... I’m intrigued to see whether you can defeat the strongest powerhouse of the Abberant forces..."
"...a member of the Big Five."
BOOOOM!
The ground beneath Orvak exploded into a deep crater.
He vanished.
Within a heartbeat...
He appeared directly before Jack.
That same unsettling grin still plastered across his face.
