Chapter 414
The battle around the food factory had grown so intense that sections of the massive facility were beginning to suffer heavy damage.
Walls had caved in.
Several chimneys had already collapsed.
Loading bays were buried beneath rubble, while shattered windows continuously rained glass across the compound.
Luckily...
With Mina constantly feeding him information, Captain Jake was deliberately steering the battle away from the factory’s most critical sections whenever he could.
Yes...
The Militants of the Aspirant Corps weren’t as individually powerful as members of the Vanguard Order.
Heck...
Even the Aspirants as a whole couldn’t compare to the Vanguard.
But that didn’t mean they were weak.
Nor did it mean they couldn’t stand their ground against a force of Aberrants.
— Captain!
Mina called urgently through the communication device.
Unfortunately...
Jake was already neck-deep in battle.
There wasn’t even a second to spare.
Two Militants had already fallen.
Even so...
The Captain never slowed.
He simply pushed harder.
His swordsmanship flowed with deadly precision.
Every movement connected seamlessly into the next.
Every step served a purpose.
Swinging an open palm forward, Jake manipulated the earth beneath the battlefield.
A massive boulder erupted upward before hurtling toward an Aberrant’s knee.
BOOOOM!
The impact buckled the creature’s leg, sending its enormous body crashing forward.
The Aberrant was just beginning to recover its balance when—
PFFFFFF!
Jake landed lightly atop one of the factory’s supporting steel beams.
A thick tail whipped toward his head.
WHOOSH!
He ducked beneath it at the last possible moment.
The tail smashed through the beam behind him, tearing the steel apart as though it were made of paper.
Without pausing...
Jake planted a hand against the towering chimney beside him.
The earth beneath it rumbled.
CRAAACK!
The entire chimney tore free from its foundation before rocketing forward like a gigantic spear.
BANG! TCHAAAAAK!
It smashed into the Aberrant’s head with devastating momentum.
Concrete exploded.
The massive structure continued driving forward until it burst cleanly through the creature’s skull.
Blue blood sprayed through the air.
Captain Jake wasn’t holding anything back.
There was no luxury for restraint.
Unlike Ray...
He couldn’t identify the Aberrants’ hidden weak points.
There wasn’t enough time to search for them.
So he relied on the one method that never failed.
Overwhelming force.
Destroy them completely...
Before their irritating passive ability had the chance to activate.
"Captain."
"There are several Two-Spined Aberrants in your area."
Mina’s warning echoed through his comm device.
Jake answered with action instead of words.
BOOM!
He burst forward.
The distance between himself and an Aberrant vanished instantly.
His longsword plunged straight into the creature’s eye.
The blade twisted violently before ripping free.
Blue blood exploded outward.
Without missing a beat...
Jake spun.
His heel crashed into an incoming claw, knocking it aside.
Using the momentum of the spin, he drove his sword backward.
He never even looked.
He didn’t need to.
TCHAAAK!
The blade punched deep into another Aberrant’s neck through a gap in its rocky armor.
Blue blood erupted like a fountain.
The creature staggered...
But remained alive.
A wound like that wasn’t enough to kill an Aberrant.
The first creature had already recovered.
It roared before twisting around to strike.
Jake planted both feet against its back.
BANG!
A powerful push kick launched him backward through the air.
While still airborne...
He rotated his body.
His sword flashed.
SHRAAAK!
The blade sliced cleanly through another Aberrant’s neck.
Its gigantic head separated from its shoulders.
Blue blood splashed across Jake’s face.
WHOOSH!
A pair of enormous claws tore toward his exposed side.
Just before they connected—
Branches from the rows of trees surrounding the factory shot forward.
They wrapped tightly around both claws.
The attack stalled for a precious second.
Jake gave a silent nod.
He never once turned around.
He already knew one of his Militants had created the opening.
Landing atop the restrained arm, Jake sprinted across it without losing speed.
At the very edge...
He kicked off.
Pointing his sword downward, he called upon the earth once more.
Stone surged upward.
It coated the blade in layers upon layers until the longsword transformed into a massive earth-forged greatsword.
WHACK! TCHAAAAK!
The oversized blade cleaved through an Aberrant’s neck in one clean strike.
Its enormous head spun through the air.
The body toppled forward.
If it crashed into the factory...
The damage would be catastrophic.
Thankfully—
Dozens of glowing strings materialized from different directions.
They wrapped around the falling corpse before pulling with everything their users had.
Guided by Mina’s calculations...
The Militants altered the body’s trajectory just enough.
Instead of crushing the factory...
The massive corpse crashed harmlessly beside it.
BOOOOOOM!
The ground shook violently.
Jake never stopped moving.
He leapt from one Aberrant to another.
A relentless storm of swordsmanship, earth manipulation, and perfectly timed movements.
Sliding beneath an Aberrant’s gigantic legs, he immediately sensed danger.
A massive foot descended toward him.
Without hesitation...
Jake slammed both palms against the ground.
The earth answered instantly.
A thick stone dome erupted around him.
BAM! BOOOOM!
The tremendous stomp shook the battlefield.
Dust exploded into the air.
The surrounding ground cracked under the impact.
Yet...
The dome never budged.
It stood firm.
Then the stone dome crumbled into countless pieces.
Out from its center—
Jake exploded upward.
His sword became nothing more than a silver blur.
Slash after slash carved through the air with breathtaking precision.
SHRAAK! SHRAAK! SHRAAK!
The Captain’s blade flashed relentlessly.
The Aberrant’s armored legs offered little resistance.
One after another...
They were severed cleanly.
The gigantic creature stumbled.
Jake let out a thunderous battle cry.
Using the momentum of his ascent, he continued tearing upward, his longsword dancing through the air in a storm of perfectly controlled strikes.
Every slash flowed seamlessly into the next.
Every cut dug deeper than the last.
The creature’s rocky armor, which had stopped countless attacks before...
Could no longer withstand the Captain’s blade.
Landing atop a nearby building with practiced ease, Jake swept his gaze across the battlefield.
His subordinates were still locked in fierce combat against the Aberrants.
"Vanguard..."
"When will they reach the wall?"
"Can it hold long enough?"
Several rapid clicks echoed through the control room before Mina finally answered.
"The wall has already been breached by fifty percent."
"At this rate... it’ll collapse within three minutes."
"And regarding the Vanguard..."
She paused.
The hesitation in her voice immediately made Jake’s expression darken.
"What about them?"
Mina remained silent for another few seconds before forcing herself to continue.
"...They’re currently out of reach."
"It appears they’ve been deployed to another planet on a mission."
"We’ve been unable to establish communication."
"...I’m still trying."
Jake’s jaw tightened so hard his teeth nearly creaked.
"The fuck do you mean?"
"There are three... maybe four entire squads in the Vanguard Order."
"How can every single one of them be unavailable?"
"This is humanity’s home, damn it!"
His grip tightened around his sword.
Veins bulged across the back of his hand.
"They couldn’t protect Wall Rose before it fell..."
"And now they won’t protect Wall Steel either?"
"If Alcatraz falls..."
"Do they seriously think the beast planets they’re clearing will matter?"
"...Fucking hell."
Mina had no answer.
There was nothing she could possibly say.
Instead...
Her voice suddenly became urgent.
"Captain!"
"You’ve just been targeted!"
Jake’s instincts screamed.
He immediately jerked his head upward.
A gigantic foot was already descending toward him.
It swallowed his entire vision.
’Fuck!’
BOOM!
Jake kicked backward with everything he had.
Barely...
Barely escaping.
The enormous foot smashed into the building.
BOOOOOOM!
Concrete exploded in every direction.
Steel beams twisted.
The entire structure collapsed beneath the overwhelming weight.
Jake avoided the stomp itself...
But not the destruction that followed.
Chunks of concrete and twisted steel blasted into him.
BAM!
His body was thrown violently through the air before crashing into another building.
Glass shattered around him.
Walls cracked.
Meanwhile...
His Militants continued battling the Aberrants with everything they had.
Rolling across the broken floor, Jake finally dug his boots into the ground.
He coughed.
Several drops of blood splattered onto the concrete.
"...Tch."
Planting one hand against the floor, he tightened his grip around his longsword.
Then...
Without giving himself even a second to recover—
He pushed himself back onto his feet.
BOOM!
He sprang forward once again.
Bursting through the ruined wall...
He returned to the battlefield.
Only to stop.
Three Aberrants stood around him.
Each one...
Bore two massive spines along its back.
’Da—’
"Captain!"
"Reinforcements have arrived!"
His comm device crackled.
The very next second—
BOOOOM! BOOOOM! BOOOOM!
A deafening barrage of energy shells rained from above.
The bombardment exploded across the battlefield in rapid succession.
The Three Two-Spined Aberrants were forced to scatter.
Jake instinctively lifted his head.
Two Hellicarriers hovered high above the battlefield.
Their heavy cannons thundered relentlessly, unleashing volley after volley of concentrated energy.
Then...
Figures began leaping from the aircraft.
One after another.
They landed perfectly atop nearby buildings.
Mechanical rifles already raised.
Their arrival was disciplined.
Organized.
Military.
Jake’s eyes widened slightly.
’...The Iron Corps.’
Finally...
One last figure dropped from the Hellicarrier.
He landed directly in front of the others.
His boots struck the ground with a heavy thud.
Rising calmly to his full height...
The man adjusted his grip before racking the bolt of his AK-47.
*Click.*
A stern expression settled across his face as he stared toward the advancing Aberrants.
