Chapter 413

Going from one battlefield to another, Ray was taking down Aberrants faster than almost anyone else on the field.

Even while locked in battles of his own, the Tribrid never stopped looking out for his teammates.

His eyes constantly swept across the city.

One moment, he was exchanging blows with an Aberrant.

The next...

He was already relaying information through the comm devices or rushing off to assist another Aspirant.

It was almost as though the towering creatures couldn’t threaten him anymore.

He wasn’t merely fighting them...

He was toying with them.

The very same enemies he had once lost everything to.

The same monsters that had nearly reunited him with his dead family on two separate occasions...

...were now struggling to even lay a finger on him.

DUUUUM!

Ducking beneath a claw that carved through the air above his head, Ray twisted his body and slashed upward.

His obsidian dagger scraped against the creature’s rocky armor before biting deep enough to rip away a large chunk.

Blue blood splattered into the air.

Using the recoil from the slash, Ray vaulted backward before landing lightly atop a transformer pole.

He balanced effortlessly upon a bundle of electrical wires.

The cables swayed beneath his weight.

Yet his footing never faltered.

A grin slowly spread across his face as he looked at the translucent blue screen floating before him.

The notification had appeared the instant the invasion began.

Unfortunately...

Lincoln’s command to attack had arrived before he could even spare a glance at it.

[DING!]

[Quest Alert!]

[Description: An invasion by Host’s most hated enemies has begun. The System was designed to help Host grow stronger and eliminate whoever—or whatever—stands in his way.

Host must contribute more than thirty percent toward humanity’s victory in this invasion by personally defeating fifty Aberrants, regardless of rank, for some juicy rewards.]

’...Oh?’

Ray blinked.

’A first.’

’The System isn’t underestimating me anymore?’

’Have I really grown that pow—’

His thoughts—and his reading—were interrupted.

ROOOAR!

The Aberrant exploded forward with a furious bellow.

Its gigantic body crossed the distance in an instant.

Before Ray could even finish reading...

The creature’s claws were already sweeping toward the transformer pole and the electrical cables beneath him.

Ray merely grinned.

BOOM!

He kicked off the wires with explosive speed.

Hovering weightlessly in the air for a brief moment, he watched the claws slice clean through the thick electrical cables.

SPARK!

Without wasting that opening—

Bang! Bang!

Two bolts of lightning burst from his fingertips.

Neither of them targeted the Aberrant.

Instead...

They struck the severed electrical wires.

CRAAAAACK!

The damaged power lines erupted with violent arcs of electricity.

Thousands of volts surged wildly through the dangling cables before racing straight into the Aberrant’s arms.

Its rocky armor could protect it from blades...

But not from electricity.

"GRRRRAAAAAAH!"

The gigantic creature convulsed violently.

Its muscles spasmed uncontrollably as crackling lightning wrapped around both arms before spreading throughout its entire body.

Blue sparks danced wildly across its rocky frame while smoke curled upward.

Standing calmly atop another nearby pole, Ray watched the spectacle unfold.

The lightning reflected inside his violet eyes.

[...Rewards: ???]

[Win the invasion first.]

[Enemies Defeated: 5/50]

’Hm.’

Ray hummed inwardly as he landed a few metres away from the twitching creature.

He didn’t linger.

The instant his feet touched the ground...

BOOM!

He kicked off again.

His body shot toward the nearest building.

One dagger disappeared from his hand as he stretched the other toward the Aberrant, which was still trembling violently beneath the electrical current like a fish dragged onto dry land.

[Thermal Vision]

The skill that allowed him to perceive the aura flowing through every living being.

Earlier...

He couldn’t maintain it for longer than two minutes before the strain became unbearable.

But after evolving twice...

Everything had changed.

Now, he could comfortably sustain it for well over six minutes.

He had even discovered a useful trick during the battle.

Instead of keeping the skill active continuously...

He switched it on only when necessary before turning it off again.

That simple adjustment drastically reduced the strain on both his mind and body.

It allowed him to keep identifying the Aberrants’ weak points throughout the battle without exhausting himself.

’Back of its thigh.’

[Arc of Judgement Activated]

Light gathered around Ray’s palm, swirling violently before condensing into a razor-sharp beam shaped like a longsword.

It hummed with immense energy.

The very instant the Aberrant finally tore itself free from the electrified power lines—

BANG!

Ray swung.

The blade of light shot through the air like a missile.

It crossed the distance in the blink of an eye.

The Aberrant hadn’t even managed to turn around.

SHRAAK!

The beam carved cleanly through the back of its left thigh.

Bone, flesh, and rocky armor offered almost no resistance.

Its entire leg separated from its body.

Blue blood erupted into the air.

The towering creature lost its balance instantly.

Unable to support its own enormous weight, it toppled sideways.

BOOOOM!

Its collapsing body crushed the transformer pole beneath it into twisted metal.

The sharpened remains of the broken pole drove straight through its exposed neck.

The gigantic body twitched once...

...before becoming completely still.

[Enemies Defeated: 6/50]

’Damn.’

’A long way to go.’

Ray slowly exhaled.

Allowing his perception to spread across the battlefield once more, he scanned every corner of the city.

The battlefield unfolded inside his mind.

Countless clashes.

Explosions.

Crashing buildings.

The roar of Aberrants.

The movements of every Aspirant.

Then...

His gaze naturally drifted upward.

High above the city...

Van was still battling the Mother Ship with unwavering determination.

Laser beams crisscrossed the sky while the white mech suit darted between them like a streak of light.

So far...

He was still safe.

Still fighting.

Still fulfilling the role he had chosen for himself.

’Trust him...’

’He doesn’t need saving every single time.’

Ray clenched his jaw before tearing his eyes away.

Using the perception that blanketed almost the entire battlefield, he could accurately sense where every Aspirant was.

Who was struggling.

Who had gained the upper hand.

Who needed immediate assistance.

Then...

He relayed that information.

It wasn’t limited to his own squad anymore.

Every Aspirant benefited from Ray’s guidance.

...Well.

Almost everyone.

Except Berg.

’That bastard surely doesn’t need my help... right?’

At first...

Most of the Aspirants had doubted Ray’s information whenever he called out an Aberrant’s weak point.

It sounded too unbelievable.

How could someone possibly know where a moving target’s heart was hidden?

Still...

With nothing to lose, they gave it a try.

And one after another...

The Aberrants fell.

Every call Ray made proved accurate.

Slowly...

Their doubts disappeared.

Replacing them was absolute trust.

— Ray! Where?! Where?! I’m losing steam!

Ray tapped his temple twice.

[Thermal Vision]

His vision shifted instantly.

"The neck."

"The left side of its neck."

— Thank you!

Lincoln immediately vaulted backward.

An earth spear erupted from the ground before rocketing toward the Aberrant.

CRAAACK!

The spear ripped cleanly through the creature’s leg, forcing it off balance.

Still breathing heavily, Lincoln tapped his comm device.

"Mina... how many Aspirants have we lost so far?"

A brief silence followed.

Lincoln’s eyes remained fixed on the surveillance drones weaving through the battlefield.

— Surprisingly... we haven’t lost a single Aspirant.

His brows knitted together.

— Even the weaker Aspirants are holding their own remarkably well.

"Huh?"

"How is that possible?"

"Are they actually taking down the Aberrants?"

— Yes.

— They’re consistently targeting the Aberrants’ weak points and dealing critical damage before the creatures can benefit from their passive evolution.

Lincoln frowned.

"...How?"

"I’m not complaining..."

"But that doesn’t make any sense."

— Honestly...

— I don’t know either.

"Hmph."

Lincoln let out a quiet breath.

His eyes shifted ahead.

Nineteen Two-Spined Aberrants stood together in the distance.

Unlike the One-Spined creatures rampaging throughout the city...

These ones merely watched.

Observing.

Waiting.

His gaze slowly rose toward the Mother Ship where Van continued exchanging fire with the remaining emitters.

Lincoln tightened his grip.

The earth beneath his feet rumbled.

Two massive earth swords burst upward into his waiting hands.

"Well..."

"If they’re doing their part..."

"Then I have to do mine as their superior."

— Wait!

— What the fu—?!

Too late.

BOOOOM!

Lincoln exploded forward.

His body shot across the battlefield like a spear that had just been unleashed.
