Chapter 412
One of the Aspirants’ top brass who was going all out against the Aberrants was none other than Berg himself.
Unlike the others who were receiving Ray’s assistance in locating the creatures’ weak points...
He wasn’t.
Since they were practically enemies, Ray couldn’t care less whether the arrogant Legacy lived or died.
The feeling was mutual.
It wasn’t as though Berg even knew Ray possessed the ability to identify an Aberrant’s weakness.
What nobody realized was that it wasn’t a skill at all.
It was one of the hidden perks granted by the Tribrid System.
Through the use of **[Thermal Vision]**, Ray could perceive far more than ordinary heat signatures.
He could see the aura flowing through every living being.
Wherever the majority of that aura gathered and condensed...
...was where their vital point lay.
For the Aberrants, that point was their hidden heart.
Once he identified it, Ray simply relayed the location through the comm devices to his teammates.
Everyone...
...except Berg.
The Legacy was currently weaving between attacks with astonishing fluidity.
So far, he had already brought down two Aberrants.
This...
...was his third.
Showing exactly why the Immortal Flame Family stood among the Big Four, Berg fought with relentless ferocity.
Flames screamed around both of his arms.
He darted between claw strikes capable of cleaving him clean in two, something made obvious by the buildings collapsing around him like fragile paper whenever an attack missed.
Each dodge was separated by a barrage of blazing fireballs.
Every single one was as large as the heads of two wolves combined.
The blazing spheres swallowed the Aberrant’s vision.
Using the brief opening, Berg glided toward the side of a nearby building before crouching behind its concrete wall for only a heartbeat.
He watched as the creature swung a massive arm through the incoming flames.
WHOOSH!
The attack split one of the fireballs apart.
Even so...
The intense flames scorched its rocky arm.
Unfortunately...
That meant almost nothing.
To an Aberrant...
Pain was merely another step toward becoming stronger.
The single spine protruding from its back glowed faintly.
Blue blood trickled down its arm as the wound slowly empowered it.
Swinging its enormous head from side to side, it searched frantically for the tiny human that had disappeared from its sight.
Then—
BOOOOM!
A thunderous explosion echoed from a nearby building.
The Aberrant instinctively turned.
A window imploded inward.
A blazing figure shot out like a meteor.
Orange flames erupted behind Berg’s boots, leaving fiery trails through the air.
At the same time, the inferno around his arms rapidly condensed, taking the form of two enormous flaming scythes.
Within a blink...
He appeared directly before the Aberrant.
Both scythes swept forward with overwhelming force.
The surrounding air distorted from the tremendous heat.
The Aberrant reacted quickly.
Crossing both arms before its face at the last possible moment—
WAAAAAM! BOOOOM!
The flaming scythes collided with its rocky guard.
A deafening explosion rolled across the battlefield.
The impact forced the gigantic creature to slide uncontrollably backward, its massive feet carving deep trenches through the road.
CRAAASH!
Its back slammed into a towering skyscraper.
The entire structure groaned before leaning dangerously beneath the tremendous impact.
Berg landed lightly upon the cracked asphalt.
He didn’t pause.
Didn’t breathe.
Didn’t hesitate.
The instant his feet touched the ground...
He exploded forward once more.
BOOOOM!
He streaked ahead like a blazing arrow.
Flames gathered around his arms, roaring hotter and hotter without leaving so much as a scorch mark upon his uniform.
As he accelerated...
The wind itself shimmered from the heat.
Loose rubble ignited.
Shattered debris blackened.
Tiny tongues of fire spread across the broken streets behind him.
Drawing one flaming scythe behind his body, Berg fixed the Aberrant with a burning glare.
Yet...
For a fleeting instant...
Ray’s face replaced the creature’s.
The memory instantly ignited the fury buried within his chest.
The flames around him flared even brighter.
The Aberrant had no intention of waiting for the human to reach it.
With an enraged roar, it lowered its body before charging head-on with earth-shaking speed.
The ground cracked beneath the Aberrant’s feet with every thunderous step it took.
Berg didn’t slow down either.
The flames around his fists intensified, blazing hotter with every passing second.
Within a blink...
The duo met in the very center of the ruined street.
Berg’s fist crashed forward with earth-rattling force.
The sound barrier shattered around his punch.
The Aberrant answered with a hardened rocky fist of its own.
BOOOOOOM!
The two attacks collided.
For the briefest of moments...
The world seemed to freeze.
Then—
Everything exploded.
The concrete beneath them burst into thousands of fragments as crater after crater formed beneath their feet.
Pellets of blazing fire scattered in every direction, raining across the street and setting part of a nearby shop ablaze.
A violent shockwave erupted from the collision, sweeping across the battlefield.
Loose rubble, shattered vehicles, and broken signposts were all hurled away as though caught in a hurricane.
Alas...
Berg had made a foolish decision.
No matter how overwhelming his flames were...
He still couldn’t rival an Aberrant in raw physical strength.
CRAAASH!
His entire body was blasted backward like a falling star.
He smashed through the front of a shop like a human cannonball.
Crimson blood sprayed into the air as his body ricocheted violently across the interior.
Broken shelves exploded apart.
Glass panes shattered around him, sharp fragments digging into his skin as he tumbled uncontrollably.
He had barely begun forcing himself upright when—
BOOOOOM!
A second Aberrant swung its enormous leg straight into the building.
The entire shop collapsed instantly.
Concrete, steel, and shattered glass erupted into a massive cloud of dust.
For a brief second...
Berg disappeared within it.
Then—
PFFFFFF!
His figure burst through the smoke like a bullet.
Both arms crossed before his face.
Blood trickled slowly from the corner of his lips as he slid across the ruined street.
His gaze instinctively lifted...
...and froze.
"...Ba-thump..."
’Wha—?!’
Protruding proudly from the creature’s back...
...were two spines.
Two perfectly formed bone spines jutted from its rocky body.
A Two-Spined Aberrant.
Before Berg’s mind could fully process what that meant—
WHOOM!
The creature spun with terrifying speed.
Its gigantic backhand ripped through the air.
Berg’s mind instantly snapped back to reality.
Flames erupted around both of his feet.
BOOM!
With a powerful kick, he launched himself high into the air, narrowly avoiding the devastating strike by the skin of his teeth.
"..."
The attack hadn’t struck a single building.
It didn’t need to.
The sheer wind pressure generated by the swing alone sent over a dozen abandoned cars flying across the street.
The vehicles whistled through the air before crashing into nearby buildings with deafening explosions.
Even faced with a Two-Spined Aberrant...
Berg’s eyes burned with stubborn determination.
’I will show that bastard.’
Landing atop a damaged building, he locked eyes with the towering creature.
Without the slightest hesitation...
He exploded forward once again.
His blazing figure streaked through the air like a living comet.
The Two-Spined Aberrant slowly turned to face the incoming human.
A cruel grin spread across its face.
"Foolish human."
CRAAAAASH!
Berg’s pupils contracted.
His heart skipped a beat.
He had made a fatal mistake.
Bursting straight through the wall of a nearby building came the One-Spined Aberrant he had been fighting moments earlier.
Chunks of concrete exploded outward as the towering beast lunged from the collapsing structure.
Its razor-sharp claws were already reaching for Berg...
Only inches away from tearing his face apart.
