Chapter 418
The sound of blades cutting through the air echoed overhead, and soon, two hellicarriers came into view.
Energy shells were immediately unleashed upon the Aberrants at the food factory.
While the bombardment continued, dozens upon dozens of Corps members slid down thick ropes, landing perfectly atop the surrounding buildings.
Leading them was a man.
He wore the Iron Corps uniform, with a single star embedded on the shoulder of his jacket.
A mask covered the lower half of his face.
A pair of gloves wrapped around his hands as he gripped his mechanical rifle firmly.
The weapon whirred loudly.
His spiky green hair almost seemed to glow beneath the sunlight.
"Captain Drey. You made it?!" Jake uttered with a small grin as he watched the man straighten himself while his soldiers charged forward to reinforce the Militants.
Looking in Captain Jake’s direction, Drey scoffed before cocking his rifle with a stern expression.
Because the Aspirant Corps existed mainly to train the younger generation, Captain Jake and his Corps were often underestimated.
Compared to the Vanguard Order and the Iron Corps, the Aspirants rarely received public recognition.
People viewed them as weaker.
What the public—and practically everyone else—kept forgetting was that without the Aspirant Corps, neither the Vanguard Order nor the Iron Corps would continue to exist.
Without them constantly training future warriors, the other Corps would have long since become severely understaffed.
Crack! Crack!
The rifle whirred loudly as Drey pushed off from the rooftop.
His VMS boots activated with a burst, sending him hurtling through the air like a broken arrow.
The muzzle of the rifle glowed with brilliant light.
Energy danced around its barrel in dazzling flashes before—
POW!
A blazing energy shell ripped through the air with terrifying force.
It punched cleanly through an Aberrant’s chest.
A gaping hole appeared in its torso as blue blood dribbled down.
The beast staggered backward for a brief moment.
Then, a wide grin slowly split across its face, as though the devastating wound hadn’t affected it in the slightest.
Instead, its aura seemed to intensify.
The creature bolted toward the Captain with frightening speed.
Even then, Drey didn’t look remotely afraid.
He calmly watched as the Aberrant’s tail lashed through the air, slicing through a nearby building as though it were paper before speeding toward him.
Drey didn’t even react.
Instead, a thick wall of earth burst upward between him and the incoming tail.
BAM! BOOOOM!
The earth wall trembled violently from the impact.
It lasted barely a second before collapsing—a testament to the tremendous boost in strength the Aberrant had received.
But alas...
The Captain was no longer there.
Instead, he now stood atop the Aberrant’s head.
His rifle whirred loudly.
Chaos erupted all around him as the reinforcements and the Militants fought with everything they had.
Abilities, gunfire, and artillery shells rained relentlessly upon the Aberrants from every direction.
"Goodnight."
Those were the first words the Captain had spoken since arriving as he pressed the muzzle of his rifle against the side of the creature’s neck.
The Aberrant twisted around sharply, its claws rushing to tear the man apart.
Yet even the sudden movement wasn’t enough to shake Drey loose.
His feet remained firmly planted atop the monster’s head.
BLAM!
A concentrated beam burst from the muzzle.
It was as thin as an ordinary bullet, yet infinitely more destructive.
The beam pierced the side of the Aberrant’s neck, leaving behind only a tiny hole.
At the very same instant, Drey vaulted backward, narrowly avoiding the claw that sliced through the space he had occupied.
The tiny wound seemed to accomplish almost nothing.
The creature even flashed the Captain a puzzled grin.
Drey simply ignored it and moved toward his next target.
’Huh? Is he deadass?’
"Hey! Come back here! I’m still ali—!"
The Aberrant was about to give chase when the flesh around its neck suddenly began to swell.
It expanded larger and larger like rising dough until...
BOOOOM!
Its entire neck exploded apart like a gutted beast.
The severed head slid from its shoulders before crashing heavily onto the ground, followed moments later by the colossal body.
The entire exchange had taken less than a minute.
Jake didn’t even spare it another glance.
The moment he greeted the Captain and received no reply, he had already thrown himself back into battle.
He was taking on two Abberants at once and was still coming out on top.
With his masterful swordsmanship, Earth ability, and the assistance of his VMS boots, he was more than holding his own against the damned creatures.
"Oi! We tried contacting the Vanguard Order, but they haven’t replied. Why didn’t you head over to the Wall instead of coming here? I didn’t even need your help!" Jake spat through his comm device while launching backward to avoid being trampled.
The instant his feet clamped onto the side of a building, he exploded forward again.
His longsword knocked a claw strike aside before an earth spear erupted from the ground and tore straight through an Abberant’s eye.
"You didn’t need help, yet you were being overwhelmed?" Drey asked calmly.
It was as though the entire situation didn’t bother him in the slightest.
Despite the Iron Corps being looked down upon by many youngsters for always protecting the Walls instead of venturing outside like the Vanguard Order, they were still a force no one dared underestimate.
They had been entrusted with humanity’s last line of defence.
Failure simply wasn’t an option.
Drey weaved between claws and whipping tails with flawless precision, streaking past shattered buildings while his boots constantly adjusted his trajectory.
His mechanical rifle never stopped firing.
Just as Jake was a master swordsman...
Drey was a master marksman.
Having trained with firearms since the age of ten, the specially engineered mechanical rifle created by the Blue Family felt like an extension of his own body.
A weapon that even gifted soldiers struggled to operate was wielded effortlessly in his hands, unleashing shot after shot upon the Abberants.
Jake refused to fall behind.
He zipped across the battlefield, appearing before Abberants one after another, refusing to let their passive abilities activate before cutting them down.
"...And about the Wall... you’ll be surprised."
Jake raised an eyebrow as he drove his sword into a nearby building.
Dragging the blade through reinforced concrete, he ripped out a massive chunk before launching it toward an approaching Abberant.
"What do you mean?"
"....."
"Captain! They’re here! They’ve finally arrived!" Mina’s voice suddenly rang through Jake’s comm device.
"Who—?!"
"Damn it... Can’t we catch a break? We just got back from a mission and we’re already dealing with this?"
A tired sigh echoed through Jake’s earpiece, followed by the roar of an aircraft slicing through the skies above them.
Jake instinctively looked up.
A sleek aircraft sped over the food factory before continuing toward another battlefield.
It wasn’t a helicopter.
Nor was it a hellicarrier.
It looked... different.
Far more advanced.
"Anyway, sorry we’re late. Hopefully, the Wall hasn’t fallen yet."
"The Vanguard Order!" a Militant shouted excitedly, staring at the aircraft as though a group of superheroes had just arrived.
