Chapter 423
’Wha—?!’
Berg didn’t have time to think.
An Aberrant was charging in from his flank, its claws mere inches from his face.
At the same time, the Two-Spined Aberrant he had intended to attack stood only a few metres ahead.
For the briefest instant, his mind froze.
His body didn’t.
Years of brutal training...
Countless battles against the elite members of the Immortal Flame Family...
His instincts took over.
He whirled around in a storm of flames.
Pellets of fire burst from his body in every direction.
At the same time, he shot forward with explosive speed, crashing straight through the window of a nearby house.
Glass exploded around him.
His body ricocheted across the tiled floor.
There wasn’t even a second to regain his bearings.
He slammed both flaming palms against the ground, grinding himself to an abrupt halt.
Just in time.
With nothing more than a lazy kick, the Two-Spined Aberrant smashed into the house.
The entire structure began collapsing around him.
Berg was already gone.
He burst through the ceiling—
Only to come face-to-face with the One-Spined Aberrant he had been fighting earlier.
Its enormous jaws were stretched wide open.
Ready to swallow him whole.
’Not today.’
Berg clapped his hands together.
A blazing spear of fire shot forward at breakneck speed.
It pierced straight into the creature’s open mouth before disappearing down its throat.
Without waiting to see the outcome...
Berg twisted through the air before diving beneath the Two-Spined Aberrant’s incoming fist.
The attack missed him by a hair.
BOOOOM!
The air behind him cracked from the sheer force.
The One-Spined Aberrant was still reeling from the inferno raging inside its body.
It couldn’t react in time.
Its ally’s fist slammed squarely into its head.
CRACK!
The towering creature was launched away like a collapsing pillar.
Berg propelled himself higher into the sky.
He tilted his head just enough to avoid another claw slash.
Heat erupted around him.
With another thunderous clap of his hands—
A massive wave of flames surged toward the Two-Spined Aberrant.
The creature immediately dropped into a crouch.
Its back...
And the two massive spines protruding from it...
Were left completely exposed.
The flames crashed against its rocky armor.
Most of the attack dispersed harmlessly.
But Berg wasn’t finished.
He thrust both hands toward the sky.
Then violently dragged them downward.
A towering pillar of fire descended from above.
BOOOOOM!
It crashed directly onto the Aberrant’s back.
The impact shattered nearby windows into countless fragments.
The creature roared in pain.
Part of its rocky armor melted away beneath the intense heat.
It immediately rose to its feet—
Only to realize...
Berg had vanished.
The Legacy was already weaving between the surrounding buildings.
Using them as cover while his Vector Mobility System boots propelled him from one structure to another.
His eyes never left his prey.
Flames wrapped around both his hands and boots, further increasing his speed as he circled the Aberrant over and over again.
"Why are you hiding, you puny human?!"
The Aberrant roared.
Its massive tail whipped through the air.
CRAAASH!
Two buildings collapsed from their foundations.
As they crumbled, the creature caught the briefest glimpse of Berg’s silhouette...
Before he disappeared once more.
"Oh?"
A savage grin spread across the Aberrant’s face.
Slowly...
It spread both arms wide.
As though inviting someone into an embrace.
Then—
CLAP!
A colossal shockwave erupted from the impact.
The entire street trembled violently.
Windows shattered instantly.
Cars.
Motorcycles.
Lamp posts.
Anything not firmly anchored was hurled through the air.
Even the surrounding buildings groaned beneath the force.
Berg was caught in the expanding wall of pressure.
His body was blasted backward helplessly.
Like a falling meteor, he crashed onto the roof of a parked car.
The metal caved inward beneath the impact.
"Gotcha."
With a single step, the Aberrant crossed five metres in the blink of an eye.
It appeared directly above Berg, who was still grunting in pain from the impact.
A sinister grin stretched across its face.
The creature lifted one massive leg before bringing it crashing down with blistering speed.
Berg’s eyes snapped open.
At the last possible moment, he slammed both palms against the crushed roof of the car.
His Vector Mobility System boots ignited.
Flames erupted beneath them.
He shot sideways just before the attack landed.
BOOOOM!
The Aberrant’s foot crushed the vehicle into a mangled heap of scrap.
The ground split apart beneath the impact.
A massive crevice spread across the street.
Berg tumbled several times before finally skidding to a halt.
A grunt escaped his lips.
Blood trickled down his chin.
A Two-Spined Aberrant was already far beyond what an ordinary Aspirant was expected to face.
Yet...
The Legacy simply refused to back down.
Slowly, Berg pushed himself to his feet.
He wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.
His burning gaze locked onto the grinning monster.
Flames erupted around both fists.
"This is starting to become fun," the Aberrant smirked.
Both of them prepared to charge.
Then—
"Man... we really don’t have time for this."
A calm voice drifted from behind the Aberrant.
Its instincts screamed.
The creature spun around instantly.
Its claws carved through the air.
Only to strike...
Nothing.
The human had vanished.
’Huh...?’
The Aberrant suddenly felt additional weight on its head.
Berg instinctively looked upward.
Standing atop the creature’s head...
Was Ray.
His expression remained calm.
"Two-Spined, huh?"
A grin spread across his face.
"You should be worth quite a lot of experience points."
Before the Aberrant could react—
BANG!
A deafening gunshot-like crack echoed through the battlefield.
White lightning flashed.
Then—
BANG!
Another explosive report rang out.
WHOOOSH!
The Aberrant swung both claws wildly above its head, determined to rip the human apart.
Blue blood streamed down its face.
Instead of weakening it...
The injury only amplified its strength.
A familiar surge of intoxicating power coursed through its body.
Its attacks became faster.
Sharper.
Deadlier.
But...
Ray was faster.
He slipped effortlessly between every slash with feline grace.
Not a single claw came close.
BANG!
A spear of crackling lightning tore through the air.
Before the Aberrant could even register the attack—
It pierced cleanly through the side of its neck.
The spear burst out the opposite side with a shrill screech.
Blue blood exploded into the air.
The creature froze.
Its eyes widened in disbelief as it stared at the human who had already landed atop a nearby car.
Ray let out a quiet breath.
’H-How...?’
THUD!
The towering Aberrant collapsed to the ground the very next second.
