Chapter 428
Crouching atop a small car, Ray stood with his hands out in front of him as he stared ahead.
Berg stood frozen in place, staring at the Two-Spined Abberant lying on the ground.
...Unmoving.
How had Ray managed to defeat something that even he had struggled against?
And he had done it so easily?
A storm of emotions rose within the Legacy’s chest as he stared ahead.
It seemed as though Ray was looking directly at him, but in reality, he was reading the system notification floating before his eyes.
[Enemies Defeated: 12/50]
’Ugh... This is taking too long.’
Ray mused inwardly, panting silently.
He had been moving throughout the battlefield, carefully picking his enemies. But what could he do when his friends were doing almost all the heavy lifting?
’Those guys are maniacs.’
He had caught sight of the others taking down Abberants one after another, with Ray’s help, of course.
These were the same creatures that could easily one-shot them, yet a group of fifteen-, sixteen-, and seventeen-year-old kids were taking them down with only a bit... a tiny bit of struggle.
It was more than impressive.
’...Actually, these bastards are easy prey once you know where to strike. Thank goodness for my skill. Otherwise, this whole battle would have been ten times harder. If I couldn’t see where their hearts were...’
Ray left the thought unfinished.
He was about to check which of his skills were still on cooldown when a loud growl echoed through his ears.
It wasn’t an animalistic growl.
It was human.
"How dare you?!"
Ray waved the system screen away and looked up.
Berg was glaring daggers in his direction, flames licking across his hands every now and then.
Ray raised a brow, genuinely having no idea why the arrogant Legacy was so pissed.
"Don’t you dare play dumb with me, bastard! How dare you take my kill?! How dare you?!"
’Oh?’
Ray let out an exhausted sigh before standing upright.
Running a hand through his silver hair, he shook his head.
"Even with the supposed blood of the Immortal Flame Family running through your veins, you’re still this dumb?"
He jumped off the car and landed with feline grace before sliding his hands into his pockets.
"Look around you. Listen to these..."
Berg fell silent.
For a brief moment, he looked around.
All he could see and hear was chaos.
Buildings crumbled as though they were nothing more than trees in a forest.
Loud roars from the Abberants permeated the air.
Thunderous bangs and heavy thuds echoed from every direction with each passing second.
There was barely a moment of silence.
Even the artillery vehicles in the distance continued to pummel the Mother ship in the sky with energy shells.
"Can you hear that?"
Ray’s voice hardened.
"This is a fucking invasion, not some military-planned beast hunt. Nobody is coming to save you. You’ll have to save yourself."
He pointed a finger at the Legacy, his expression turning stern.
"...And for fuck’s sake, dumbass, this ain’t no competition. This is war. Nobody is going to award you points for your contribution. We’re fighting for survival, so stop sulking and get back to work."
A static sound suddenly echoed through Ray’s ears.
"Oi, Ray! Where are you? I need help. Where should we strike?!"
Ray placed a finger against the bud in his ear.
He closed his eyes for a moment, allowing his perception to flood across the battlefield.
Then, he tapped the bridge between his temples twice.
"Left side. Close to the stomach."
"You’re a lifesaver, bro. Thank you!"
Ray nodded before looking back at Berg.
He let out another sigh, then turned around and began walking away.
"When this is all over, I will make sure I skin and burn you alive," Berg threatened.
His palm pointed forward, balls of flame dancing across his fingers.
Ray halted.
A slow smirk crossed his face.
He lifted one finger into the air.
Sparks of lightning danced across its tip.
"Not if I electrocute you first."
Then, without saying another word, Ray simply vanished from view.
He was gone with such speed that Berg’s eyes could barely keep up.
"Tch. Bastard." The Legacy scoffed before turning around and rushing in a different direction.
.....
Landing atop a building, Ray immediately darted forward, sliding beneath a claw that crashed into the roof behind him.
CRACK!
The impact smashed the rooftop open, sending chunks of concrete tumbling into the street below.
Ray spun around, his feet barely touching the broken surface before he pointed both hands forward, his expression turning stern.
[Arc of Judgement activated]
BOOOOM!
A sword-like beam tore forward like a bullet.
It struck the Abberant’s shoulder and ripped straight through its body, bursting out the other side in a shower of blue blood.
The creature let out a deafening roar before losing its balance and falling face-first onto the building.
CRASH!
The structure couldn’t withstand the impact.
The entire building crumbled beneath the creature’s weight, swallowing its massive body beneath a mountain of rubble.
Ray landed on the edge of a chimney with feline agility.
Blue blood painted his face, streaking across his cheeks like a gruesome mask.
He barely had time to breathe.
Another Abberant had already closed in on his position.
A massive fist came rocketing towards his head.
Ray’s instincts screamed.
The boy launched himself into the air with all his might, narrowly avoiding the incoming fist.
Now, he was several metres above the ground.
His hands shifted.
Claws extended from his fingertips.
His eyes glinted with a murderous light.
’I wonder what happens when these two mix.’
His entire arms had now grown fur, becoming thicker and more muscular as sharp, curved claws extended from his hands.
From the tops of his shoulders to the tips of his claws, arcs of lightning crawled across his fur like living serpents.
Ray stared down at the Abberant.
He was about to try something crazy.
He was going to fuse his bloodlines together.
Ever since he had obtained his System, Ray had become accustomed to switching between abilities as quickly as possible.
Human.
Werewolf.
Celestial.
Each possessed their own strengths.
But what if he stopped treating them as separate powers?
What if he combined them?
What would happen?
There was no better opportunity to find out.
This was a battlefield, but Ray wasn’t genuinely worried about his life.
These weaklings couldn’t even touch him.
So why not experiment?
Crack—!
BANG!
The boy shot downward like a bolt of lightning.
His body became a blur as he drove both hands forward like bullets, aiming directly for the face of the Abberant that had attacked him.
The lightning surrounding his arms became increasingly violent the closer he got.
Until—
"....."
For a brief moment, it felt as though the entire world had gone silent.
Ray’s fist collided with the Abberant’s guard.
Despite the boy’s incredible speed, the creature wasn’t completely helpless.
Its hands had crossed in front of its face at the last possible moment.
Ray’s fist remained pressed against its guard.
The two seemed frozen in place.
Lightning crawled violently across Ray’s furry, muscular arms.
Neither moved.
Neither gave way.
The world itself seemed to hold its breath.
Then—
A heartbeat later, a sonic boom tore through the battlefield.
BOOOOOOM!
Windows across the surrounding buildings shattered into countless shards.
The rooftop beneath them blew apart as violent sparks of lightning erupted in every direction.
The Abberant’s entire body suddenly lit up.
Its muscles spasmed.
Its massive arms trembled.
Then—
BOOOOM!
A thunderous kinetic discharge exploded from Ray’s fist.
The concentrated force smashed into the Abberant’s guard like a cannon fired at point-blank range.
The creature’s arms immediately went limp.
Its limbs practically turned into wet spaghetti as the overwhelming force ripped through its body.
Its towering frame was uprooted from the ground and sent hurtling into the distance like a discarded ragdoll.
Ray remained suspended in the air for another second before slowly descending.
His eyes widened slightly.
He looked at his own hand.
The lightning was still crawling across his claws.
A grin slowly spread across his face.
[Congratulations, Host has just created his own skill.]
[Skill Name: Railgun Punch]
[Enemies Defeated: 14/50]
Ray landed on the shattered roof of the nearest building.
He stared at the System notification for a moment before looking down at his fist again.
The feeling was different.
This wasn’t simply him using two abilities at the same time.
He had created something new.
Something that belonged to him.
A small smile curved across his lips.
"Beautiful."
