Chapter 429
The battle at the food factory was reaching new heights.
With the arrival of Captain Drey and the Militants from the Iron Corps, they were quick to get to work and push the battle further in humanity’s favor.
With the use of his mechanical gun, Drey instantly became a menace on the battlefield.
Precise shots of energy shells tore through the air, piercing the bodies of the Abberants and destroying them from the inside out.
He didn’t speak.
He didn’t need to command his crew.
They simply followed his movements.
Mechanical guns in hand, they spread throughout the battlefield, supporting the Militants from the Aspirant Corps as they fought the Abberants.
With more than two hundred Militants now present, it seemed as though the tide of battle was finally shifting toward humanity’s side.
But deep down, they all knew the truth.
If the Abberants became injured enough, things would turn bad for all of them.
For every single Abberant that lost its life, two or three humans could lose theirs.
They had to be cautious.
Unfortunately, they didn’t have Ray here to help them locate the hearts of the Abberants.
Neither did they possess the technology capable of finding them.
So all they could do was fight.
Keep fighting.
Keep pummeling the creatures with heavy attacks while desperately hoping that one of their strikes would finally land the killing blow.
There were a few string and plant ability users among the ranks of the Militants who weren’t directly fighting the Abberants.
Their role was simple.
Whenever one of the creatures fell, they redirected its body away from the important sections of the food factory.
Any serious damage to the factory could cripple humanity’s food supply in a matter of days.
With the help of Mina and her drones, the Militants had been able to perform their jobs as perfectly as possible.
Captain Jake had already picked himself back up.
Blood rolled down his temples, but he paid it no mind.
Quickly grabbing his longsword, he rushed straight into the midst of the Abberants.
He danced and weaved between their strikes, his sword flashing repeatedly as he cut down limbs with as much precision and speed as he could manage.
But it seemed as though he was becoming slower.
And there was a reason for that.
They had already been fighting for ten minutes before the Iron Corps arrived to assist them.
Performing high-level stunts in the air for that long had placed an enormous strain on his VMS boots.
The gas reserves were being exhausted rapidly.
Tilting his head to the side, Jake narrowly avoided a claw that sliced through the air beside his face.
His sword snapped upward.
SHING!
The weapon cleaved through the limb in one clean motion.
Jake immediately vaulted off the fist of another creature, sending himself soaring into the air.
Earth erupted from the ground beneath him.
The material twisted and wrapped itself around his longsword, extending its length while increasing its size and weight.
.... And bulkier.
With a loud grunt, Jake hurled the enlarged sword downward.
BOOM!
The weapon slammed into the side of an Abberant’s neck.
It sank deep into its flesh.
Jake gritted his teeth and pulled the weapon back and forth, sawing through the thick neck with as much force as he could muster.
The Abberant roared and thrashed violently.
But Jake didn’t stop.
A few seconds later, the creature’s head finally separated from its body.
Unfortunately, that moment of concentration cost him.
A massive fist from a Two-Spined Abberant came racing towards him.
Jake’s eyes widened.
He had nowhere to dodge.
Nowhere to run.
He was still in the air.
Luckily—
POW! POW!
Two precise shots tore through the battlefield.
Energy shells slammed directly into the creature’s outstretched hand.
The Abberant’s fist stopped just inches away from Jake.
Then—
Frost began crawling across its arm.
Ice spread from the point of impact, rapidly encasing the creature’s entire limb before it could react.
Jake snapped out of his daze.
Without wasting a second, he raised his sword and brought it down against the frozen arm.
CRACK!
SHATTER!
The whole hand shattered into shards of ice.
Drey kicked off from the building he had been perched on just as a massive leg slammed into it.
While still mid-air, the man quickly swapped his spent rounds for another magazine before aiming and firing several shots.
Laser beams tore through the air, slicing through the creature’s neck before bursting out the other side.
It was injured.
But not dead yet.
Drey didn’t need it to be.
Landing atop a chimney, he watched as his Militants vaulted into the air and began bombarding the wounded creature with rapid fire.
Jake slid between the second set of claws from the Abberant whose hands had been encased in ice moments earlier.
Gliding around its head, the man positioned himself behind the Abberant before thrusting his sword forward with all his might.
The earth encasing his sword burst forth like a spear.
It tore through the back of the creature’s neck before bursting out the other side, carrying fragments of its heart with it.
Before the body could even hit the ground, Jake found another building and landed on it.
He drew in several ragged breaths while watching his Militants continue the fight.
"You didn’t happen to bring a few cartridges of gas, did you?" Jake asked through his comm device.
Due to the fact that they had little to no time to prepare, they hadn’t been able to bring a fresh supply of gas for their boots.
It was a miracle that Jake had been able to assemble so many men in such a short amount of time.
It was an even greater miracle that they had arrived in the nick of time to intercept the Abberants before the factory fell.
With a grunt, Drey unleashed several shots into the eyes of another Abberant before slinging his gun over his shoulder.
He immediately pulled out a short sword and jammed it into the side of the creature’s neck.
Blue blood poured out like a geyser as the Abberant thrashed wildly, desperately trying to catch the man off guard.
But Drey was already on the ground.
Swiftly switching his ammunition to another round, he raised his weapon and calmly placed his finger on the trigger.
Then—
Bang!
A beam fired from the weapon.
It collided with the creature’s head, ripping a gaping hole straight through it.
Smoke oozed from the muzzle of the gun.
"Yeah, I did," Drey replied to Jake, blowing the smoke away.
Letting his gun hang over his shoulder, he glanced toward the Hellicarrier he had descended from.
It was still bombarding the Abberants with energy shells.
Tapping his comm device, he ordered,
"Send fresh cartridges down now."
Looking toward where Jake was perched with his longsword, he nodded at the man.
"You and your men go and get your refill. We’ll cover for you."
As he finished speaking, more men began descending from the Hellicarrier, carrying fresh cartridges of gas.
"Thanks," Jake uttered before vaulting away with his men.
They left the Iron Corps to face the now fifty-something remaining Abberants.
A number that might have seemed small to anyone who didn’t understand just how powerful these creatures were.
Because even fifty Abberants were enough to turn the entire battlefield into a slaughterhouse.
