Chapter 470
Finally, the day had arrived.
The day Ray’s fate would be decided.
The day of the trial had arrived after the Tribrid was successfully transported to Wall Diamond.
Unlike the other walls, Wall Diamond was basically the capital of Alcatraz.
All the important figures that mattered, incredibly wealthy people with generations of wealth, lived here.
If you were rich, you could live in Wall Steel.
But if you were rich and attempted to stay in Wall Diamond, you would go broke within a few days.
That was how expensive this place was.
Only VVIPs could afford to live here.
The security, the buildings, the technological advancements—everything was on another level.
If it wasn’t for this trial, Ray would have never dreamt of stepping foot into Wall Diamond.
From an average boy living in Wall Rose, where life was almost like the medieval era, to an Aspirant transported to Wall Steel for training.
Being in Wall Steel, though he hadn’t gone out much, had been a dream come true.
And now, he was a criminal in Wall Diamond.
All within a fucking year.
.....
Zooming through the streets at incredible speed was the transport taking him to the trial.
Ray was handcuffed behind his back, with about four Vanguard members sitting around him.
Their hands remained on their weapons, ready for anything whatsoever.
«What will you do if you are announced as a threat today?» Bruce couldn’t help but ask.
Ray didn’t reply.
He only smiled as he continued looking at the Vanguard members surrounding him.
They were obviously uncomfortable.
Yet the boy didn’t stop scanning them.
With the way he smiled while silently observing them, he almost looked like a psychopathic killer.
But he said nothing.
He simply enjoyed the ride.
Within half an hour, the transport could be heard coming to a halt.
"Tsk. Too bad I was unable to see Wall Diamond in its full glory because of these damned tinted glasses."
"We are here."
A Vanguard member announced.
The door opened.
Two of the members stepped outside before gesturing for Ray to come down.
Ray stepped out.
The remaining two Vanguard members followed after him.
The other vehicles were opened as well, with Captain Ella and a few more Vanguard members stepping out.
They stood before quite an impressive building.
The moment Ray took a step forward—
Flash! Flash! Flash!
Tons of cameras immediately went off in front of him, nearly blinding him.
Ray squinted.
The flashes irritated him even more because of his sensitive eyes.
Dozens of reporters stood behind the barriers, cameras and microphones in hand as they shouted questions at Ray.
The Vanguard didn’t fret.
They had already stationed several men around the trial house, and they were doing a fine job keeping the reporters at bay.
Barriers created from different abilities had been erected around the area to keep the news reporters from getting too close.
After a few seconds, Ray’s eyes finally adjusted to the flashing lights.
He heaved a sigh.
"Never knew I would be treated like a celebrity in my lifetime."
A grin spread across his face.
"Feels good, I must say. Is this what the Big Four Legacies experience too? Well, I can’t know bec—"
"Just move, talkative."
Ella snarled as she gestured for her men to move.
The Vanguard members nudged the Tribrid forward, and Ray obediently began walking.
There were dozens of hover cars lining the area around the trial house.
Hundreds of men from different factions stood guard.
Ray glanced around at the massive gathering.
"I’m sorry, am I talking too much?"
He shrugged.
"I mean, you can’t really blame me. I was chained in a damn dark cell for a month with nobody to talk to."
He looked toward Ella.
"If it were you, I’m sure you would have gone mad by now—"
Ella abruptly turned around.
Her sharp glare silenced him for a moment.
"If I hear a peep from you again, imma make sure you aren’t able to say a single word ever again."
Ray smiled.
He raised both his hands as much as the cuffs behind him allowed before making a zipping motion across his lips.
Then he threw away the imaginary key.
Ella stared at him for a second.
Ray’s grin widened.
She simply shook her head and continued walking.
They finally reached the steps leading to the trial house.
Two men standing guard stepped forward and pushed open the massive double doors.
Stopping just shy of the entrance, Ella turned her head slightly to look at Ray.
Shockingly, the boy remained completely composed, as though the entire ordeal wasn’t affecting him at all.
"You aren’t nervous?"
Ray simply shrugged without saying a word.
Ella stared at him for another second before turning back around.
She walked into the hall, with Ray and his ’bodyguards’ following closely behind.
And soon—
Ray gulped loudly.
The chamber they had entered was vast and imposing.
Its towering metallic walls enclosed a space large enough to accommodate hundreds of people—and it did.
Rows upon rows of humans occupied the seats, their attention focused entirely on the center of the chamber.
Tiered spectator stands rose along both sides of the room, with each row providing a clear view of the chamber below. The seats extended upward across several levels, forming a wide semicircle around the central floor.
At the far end stood a separate elevated platform reserved for the jury panel.
Several long rows of seats were arranged across it, positioned high enough for the jury to overlook the entire chamber.
Above them, on an even higher platform, stood a large solitary seat reserved for the Commander of the Military.
Its elevated position gave whoever occupied it an unobstructed view of the entire room.
At the exact center of the chamber stood a long metallic pole anchored firmly into the floor.
It rose several metres into the air, its thick cylindrical body forged from dark, reinforced metal.
Numerous locking mechanisms and metallic restraints had been built into its surface, giving the structure the appearance of something specifically designed to hold even the strongest of beings in place.
Cold white lights illuminated the chamber from above, casting sharp reflections across the metallic surfaces while leaving the corners of the room shrouded in faint darkness.
Every single stand was occupied.
From the spectator stands to the jury platform and even the Commander’s seat, there wasn’t a single empty space.
Although, for some reason, the Commander wasn’t the one occupying his seat.
Instead—
Jack Kyre sat there.
There was also a separate stand on the ground floor occupied by a few familiar faces.
The moment Ray laid eyes on them, his heart dropped.
His eyes almost welled up.
"G-Guys..."
He whispered.
Felix.
Van.
Kai.
Chloe.
Trisha.
And even Caster.
They were all sitting together on that stand.
But they weren’t alone.
Berg and three other people were sitting there as well, although Ray couldn’t make out their faces clearly from his current position.
A Vanguard member suddenly pushed Ray’s back, forcing him to stagger forward.
Ray clenched his teeth before continuing.
He walked toward the center of the chamber until he finally stood before the metallic pole.
His eyes slowly scanned the enormous room.
A few drones buzzed through the air, their cameras pointed toward him.
Bonny and Johnny could also be seen standing quietly off to the side.
Ray’s gaze then shifted toward the jury platform.
Captain Drey.
Captain Jake.
And ten other unfamiliar faces.
’Hang on...’
Ray’s eyes suddenly stopped on one of the figures.
The man wore the standard uniform of the Iron Corps.
A pair of khaki pants.
A brown long-sleeved shirt.
And over it, an earthy-brown coat whose length reached the back of his heels.
It was the standard attire of the Iron Corps.
But there was something else about his uniform.
At the back of his coat, two spears were drawn crossing over a shield of some kind.
And on his shoulder, two stars were firmly embedded into the fabric.
The man leaned forward slightly as he stared at Ray.
’Fuck.’
Recognition immediately dawned on Ray.
’This General?’
His eyes widened slightly.
’The same General from the Shelter?!’
’Wh-What is a General of the Iron Corps doing here?’
A few months ago, after the Abberants’ invasion of Wall Rose, Ray, Van, and the other survivors had been sent to the Shelter.
It was there that Ray had encountered this same General, who had come to deliver the news that all the surviving teenagers were to be sent to the Aspirant Corps.
Ray’s thoughts were abruptly interrupted.
Whoosh!
Ella spun her staff fluidly before bringing it crashing into Ray’s thighs and knees.
Thud!
The boy’s legs gave out beneath him, forcing him to drop to his knees directly in front of the metallic pole.
Before he could react, his hands were pulled around the pole.
Clack!
Handcuffs snapped into place around his wrists.
The restraints locked firmly.
Ray tested them instinctively.
They didn’t budge.
After ensuring that he was securely fastened to the pole, Ella stepped away alongside the other Vanguard members.
Ray slowly lifted his head.
His eyes trailed across the entire hall.
It was packed to the brim.
Aspirants from the Corps.
Civilians from Wall Steel.
Civilians from Wall Diamond.
And members of the Iron Corps.
Hundreds of humans occupied the chamber.
All of them had gathered to witness his fate.
And beyond these walls, millions more were watching through the livestream.
Ray swallowed silently.
This wasn’t just a trial.
It was a spectacle.
"Ahem..."
Jack cleared his throat.
The noise immediately drew the attention of the entire chamber.
"The Commander of the Military Force is unfortunately not around again."
Jack paused briefly.
"And with his permission, he asked me to head this trial to determine what is to be done with Aspirant Ray Dawson."
The chamber remained silent.
Jack’s gaze swept across the room before finally settling on Ray.
His expression hardened.
"With the power vested in me as one of the Big Four Legacies, and the authority vested in me by Commander Blake to oversee this trial..."
He paused.
The silence became heavier.
Jack’s eyes remained fixed on Ray.
"I hereby declare..."
A brief pause.
"Let the trial begin!"
