By the thirty-third minute, Demien noticed Rodri shading toward Rashford’s side on two separate transitions, moving there before Demien had even fully received the ball.
The second time, he smiled slightly.
He said something quick to Bruno while City had the ball.
In the thirty-fifth minute, Haaland received with Maguire tight on him, protected it, and laid it to Álvarez.
Demien got across and shoulder-to-shoulder with Álvarez before he could turn.

Højlund laid it to McTominay, who drove into the box.
Stones slid across and blocked the final pass.

But Demien pointed toward Rodri while jogging toward the corner setup, and Bruno understood exactly what he’d noticed.
City cleared United’s corner in the thirty-seventh minute, Bernardo receiving and trying to counter.
Demien tracked him for twenty yards and forced him toward the touchline rather than diving in.
Bernardo returned it to Stones.
United reset their shape.
No activation needed.
City tried again in the thirty-eighth minute, Stones to Rodri to Foden to Haaland in the right channel, Maguire tracking.
Haaland protected it and returned it to Álvarez.
Demien anticipated the return and stepped ahead of him.

Rodri slid left again, chasing Rashford’s transition run.
Demien saw the space opening behind Rodri and accelerated through it.

Demien took one touch diagonally across Ederson’s angle.
Ederson committed to the ball.
Demien finished low across him toward the opposite corner before Dias could reach it.

Then he screamed, turned toward the Stretford End, and ran.
He slid onto his knees at the corner and punched both fists toward the crowd.
Bruno crashed into him.
Højlund arrived and nearly knocked them both over.
McTominay threw himself into it.
Amrabat arrived from deep midfield.
The screens flashed the two names everyone had been waiting for.

"Haaland gave City the lead, Walter’s answered it," the commentator said, "but the real story is tactical — Rodri kept protecting Rashford’s lane because United had threatened it repeatedly, and Walter attacked the space that left behind him. Bruno found the run. That’s a goal built over thirty-nine minutes, not one moment."

Haaland waited near halfway with his teammates, no dramatic reaction, taking a drink and saying something brief to Rodri while United celebrated.

City tightened up again almost immediately, Rodri sitting slightly deeper to deny Demien the same space, Bernardo dropping closer during buildup, Grealish isolating Dalot, Álvarez working around Amrabat.
Demien spent several minutes almost entirely without the ball.
In the forty-second minute, Evans fouled Grealish near the edge of United’s defensive third.
Álvarez curled the free kick toward goal.
Onana read it and saved.
City recovered the rebound and kept United pinned.
Demien glanced at the clock once United cleared — still several minutes to halftime, and City looked angrier rather than shaken.
In the forty-fourth minute, Demien won another second ball after Maguire’s challenge on Haaland dropped awkwardly.
He took it under pressure from Bernardo.

He released Bruno, who immediately found Rashford.
United countered, Rashford carrying centrally this time, McTominay running toward the edge of the box, Demien staying underneath the attack.
Rashford found McTominay.

Ederson reacted and tipped it over with the opposite hand.
Old Trafford began to celebrate before the ball had even cleared the bar.
Then the groan.
McTominay grabbed his head with both hands.
Demien grabbed the back of his own head too — United had been inches from the turnaround before halftime.
City cleared the resulting corner and rebuilt.
Deep into stoppage time, City kept possession patiently rather than forcing anything, working it through Rodri, Stones, Bernardo, back to Rodri.
Grealish received on the left and drew Dalot toward him.
Bernardo moved around the channel.
Demien tracked Álvarez centrally.
Amrabat protected the space in front of the center-backs.
Bernardo eventually received near the left side of United’s box with room to lift his head — exactly what Ten Hag had warned about all week.
Maguire and Evans had both shifted toward the ball.
Haaland waited alone at the far post.
Bernardo clipped the cross over everyone.
Haaland rose above the recovering defender and headed downward from close range.
It looked certain.
Onana exploded across his line and got one hand into the path of it.
The ball deflected away.
The stadium reaction wasn’t celebration — it was a roar of pure disbelief.
Haaland landed staring at Onana.
Onana screamed and punched both fists outward.
Demien turned straight to his goalkeeper, shouting approval while pushing United’s line out before City could reach the rebound.
The referee blew for halftime seconds later.

City left the pitch without any sign of being rattled, Rodri walking beside Bernardo discussing the space United had used for Demien’s run, Haaland speaking briefly with Álvarez, Guardiola already gesturing to his staff before the players had even reached him.
United left with more visible emotion.
Højlund still looked frustrated about the penalty.
Maguire slapped Onana on the back for the final save.
McTominay kept replaying his shot with his hands.
Demien walked beside Bruno. "Rodri’s shifting toward Marcus’s side almost every time we win it back centrally," he said.

Demien sat with his chest still heaving, in no mood to be pleased with himself just because he’d scored.
His eyes went straight to the analysis screen when Ten Hag started replaying City’s last chance.
Ten Hag froze it on Bernardo, cross about to leave his foot, Haaland almost alone at the far post, Maguire and Evans both drawn to the near side, Demien outside the box with Álvarez.
"You can’t solve this one from where you’re standing," Ten Hag said. "The back line and the wide midfielder have to stop Bernardo getting time to lift his head. That’s not on you."
He changed the clip.
Demien’s equalizer, frozen a few seconds before the finish — Rashford running left, Rodri shifted toward him, Demien behind Rodri preparing to attack the opposite space.
Ten Hag tapped Rodri’s position. "They started protecting Marcus before we’d even released him. That’s a central lane — but only if we move it fast enough before Stones or Bernardo repairs the space."
He adjusted Demien’s starting position slightly higher for the second half, Amrabat sitting underneath him.
"Scott, you occupy Stones the second he steps into midfield — don’t let Rodri recover onto Demien for free. Bruno, release the pass the moment Demien’s beyond Rodri, don’t wait. Marcus — keep making that run even when you don’t get it. It’s still dragging their protection away."
He went back to the frozen image of Bernardo lifting his head, Haaland waiting at the far post.
He tapped Bernardo’s position twice.
"We got away with that once," he said. "Don’t give him the same cross again."
