"We got away with that once. Don’t give him the same cross again."
Demien looked from Bernardo frozen on the screen to Haaland waiting beyond United’s line.
He drank, wiped the sweat off his face, and asked, "What happens if Álvarez drags Sofyan the other way before Bernardo overlaps?"
Ten Hag moved the markers. "Then you can’t just abandon the center to follow Bernardo. Diogo or the nearest wide player has to delay the overlap long enough for the back line to reset. Harry and Jonny cannot both step toward the same delivery — one of them has to stay with Haaland regardless of where the ball goes."
He switched to the equalizer, freezing it with Rashford pulling Rodri toward City’s left, Demien attacking the space behind him.
"Marcus, keep making that run even when the ball isn’t coming to you — Rodri reacting to you is what opens the lane," Ten Hag said. "Scott, you occupy Stones the second he steps into midfield. Rasmus, keep giving him that wall pass when he goes beyond Rodri. Bruno, release it the instant he’s past — don’t wait for the picture to get any cleaner."
Demien listened with his chest still rising and falling hard, shirt soaked through, the adrenaline from the equalizer still in him but the whole first half’s workload sitting heavy in his legs too.
Højlund sat retying the same bootlace twice, barely looking up, still carrying the weight of the penalty he’d given away.
Demien noticed.
As the players stood to head back out, he bumped Højlund’s shoulder once. "Next one," he said.
Højlund looked at him and nodded.
City came out of the tunnel calm rather than frustrated at being pegged back, Rodri talking with Bernardo, Guardiola catching Stones for a word before he stepped onto the grass, Haaland already jogging toward the center circle.
City circulated through Dias, Stones and Rodri to start the half.
Stones stepped into midfield.
McTominay moved to meet him.
Demien checked Bernardo.
Álvarez dropped closer to Amrabat.
Grealish stayed wide.
United held the structure and forced City backward, a full sequence defended correctly before anything else happened.
United recovered through Maguire.
Demien received.
Bernardo closed from behind immediately.
Demien released Amrabat first time rather than try to turn.
Amrabat found Bruno.
Bruno tried to release Rashford, but Walker read it and cut it out.
City rebuilt instantly.
In the forty-ninth minute, Álvarez received centrally, Demien positioned between him and Bernardo.
Álvarez didn’t force the middle.
He switched it to Grealish on City’s left.
Grealish controlled it facing Dalot.
Bernardo began the overlap outside him.
Dalot couldn’t fully abandon Grealish.
Demien started toward Bernardo, but Álvarez kept drifting centrally behind him, and for a half-second he hesitated between the two threats.
Grealish waited just long enough, then released Bernardo outside.
Bernardo reached the left edge of the box.
Maguire shifted toward the ball.
Evans took a half-step the same way.
Haaland stayed behind them both at the far post.
Demien saw it and shouted.
Too late.
Bernardo clipped the cross over the line.
Haaland rose.
Maguire tried to recover underneath him.
Haaland powered the header down and past Onana.
Manchester United 1 — 2 Manchester CityErling Haaland 49’
Ten Hag had shown them this exact danger minutes ago.
Haaland celebrated toward City’s traveling end.
The screens flashed HAALAND — 26’, 49’, then WALTER — 39’.
Demien stopped with his hands on his hips, looking at the space Bernardo had crossed from, then at Maguire and Evans.
Maguire swore and pointed at the far post.
Nobody argued — everyone already knew what had happened.
Demien glanced at the scoreboard once.
Statistics weren’t what bothered him.
United had fallen behind again the moment they’d fought level.
He ran for the center circle. "Give me the ball," he told Bruno.
United tried to answer straight away in the fifty-first minute, Bruno finding Demien with Rodri waiting ahead.
Demien drove at him, Bernardo closing from behind.
He looked toward Rashford first.
Rodri shifted left.
Demien turned right toward McTominay.
Stones stepped out before McTominay could turn.
City won it back.
Guardiola had changed something — Rodri now sat slightly deeper on recovery, Bernardo stayed closer to Demien, Stones stepped to the receiver rather than automatically joining every attack.
City had adjusted specifically for him.
City kept United pinned through the fifty-third minute, Rodri finding Foden between Lindelöf and Amrabat.
Foden turned.
Demien recovered toward him.
Foden released Grealish, who cut inside Dalot and bent a shot toward the far corner.
Onana got down and pushed it away.
City reached the loose ball before United could counter.
Demien took two steps toward it and stopped — Rodri had already got there.
City started again.
Through the fifty-fifth to fifty-seventh minutes, Stones and Rodri moved the ball around United relentlessly — Demien closing Bernardo, Bernardo giving it backward, Demien turning toward Rodri only to find he’d already moved it, McTominay closing Stones, Stones finding Foden, Foden turning back to Walker.
United kept shifting five or ten yards and arriving half a second late each time.
"He’s not losing every duel," the commentator said. "The problem is City keep presenting another receiver the moment United close the first one. They need the ball themselves just to stop defending for a minute."
Maguire finally won a direct header against Haaland in the fifty-seventh minute.
It dropped toward Demien.
Álvarez attacked the second ball.
Demien got his body between Álvarez and possession.

He won the contact and controlled it.
Bernardo arrived from behind immediately.
Rodri positioned ahead.
Demien tried to carry through both anyway.
Rodri got a toe to it.
City regained possession.
Demien slapped both hands together and cursed at himself — the simple pass to Amrabat had been right there.
City attacked off the turnover, Álvarez receiving, Haaland starting behind Maguire.
Demien sprinted back.
Álvarez tried the through ball.
Maguire stretched and blocked it before Haaland could reach the box.
Demien raised a hand toward him — Maguire had just repaired his mistake.
United regained possession in the fifty-ninth minute, Demien receiving in almost the same spot.
Bernardo came.
This time he didn’t turn — he played it first time to Bruno.

He moved past Bernardo after releasing it.
Bruno sent it to Rashford.
Walker shifted to cover.
Rodri shaded left too, protecting United’s usual transition route.
Demien noticed, and this time he didn’t sprint beyond Rodri like the first-half goal.
He slowed.
McTominay kept going instead.
Rodri checked McTominay’s run, and for one step his body turned away from Demien.
That was the opening.
Demien accelerated through the center.
Bruno found
Dias pressed into his back.
Højlund protected it.
Stones started stepping toward Demien.
Højlund laid it into his path.

Demien took it beyond Rodri’s recovering shoulder.
Stones stepped into his path.
Demien pushed the touch outside him rather than try anything elaborate, his acceleration carrying him clear.

Walker recovered inward.
Demien reached the box with Ederson coming off his line.
He waited until Ederson set his feet, then drove a low right-footed finish beside him before Walker could reach him.

Manchester United 2 — 2 Manchester City Demien Walter 61’ (Assist: Rasmus
Old Trafford erupted before he’d finished his turn.
The second time City had led.
The second time Demien had answered.
He didn’t run away from Højlund — he turned straight to him, already screaming, and grabbed him around the shoulders as they crashed together, Bruno and McTominay arriving a beat later.
The screens read ERLING HAALAND — 2 GOALS, then DEMIEN WALTER — 2 GOALS.
"Both of them have scored twice now," the commentator said. "But look at how differently it’s happened — Haaland’s goals have come from City methodically building chances around United’s back line, while Walter’s have come from attacking the space City’s own structure keeps leaving open. Two completely different games producing the same number."
「MATCH MISSION PROGRESS」 「Direct Goal Contributions: 2/2」 「Transition Entries: 4/4」
Haaland stood near halfway during the celebration, no reaction beyond taking a drink and saying something to Rodri, who pointed toward the space Demien’s run had come from.
City were already working on it.
By the sixty-third minute, Guardiola had adjusted again — Rodri sitting several yards deeper on every City attack, Bernardo told to close Demien the instant United won it back, Stones reining in how often he advanced past Rodri.
City were trading attacking aggression to stop Demien running straight through the middle again.
The next United recovery, Demien received it with Bernardo already within touching distance, Rodri ten yards beyond him, Rashford starting to run.
Demien turned and found no central lane.
He played backward to Maguire.
No activation.
The adjustment had worked.
He glanced toward Guardiola on the touchline — not dramatically, just long enough to register that City had changed because of him specifically.
The match turned physical through the sixty-fifth minute — McTominay colliding with Rodri over a second ball, Højlund and Dias wrestling on a long pass, Maguire stepping hard into Haaland, Bernardo clipping Demien after he released the ball.
No confrontation.
Just heavier and heavier derby contact.
United won another transition in the sixty-seventh minute, Maguire heading clear of Haaland, Amrabat collecting the second ball and finding Demien.
Bernardo closed immediately.
Demien took his first touch away from him.

Rodri stayed central.
Rashford started between Walker and Dias.
Demien didn’t wait for Rodri to adjust, releasing the pass early with the outside of his foot — nothing more than that, the strongest version of that idea still in reserve.
The ball bent behind City’s line.
Rashford took it on his chest entering the box.
Walker recovered.
Dias came across.
Old Trafford rose.
Rashford let it drop, shifted to his right foot and shot across Ederson.
It went just outside the far post.
He froze for half a second.
Then swore.
Demien bent forward with both hands on his knees — he’d thought that pass had just won the lead.
Rashford turned toward him. "Fuck."
Demien clapped twice and pointed forward.
No blame.
City answered immediately in the seventy-first minute, Grealish receiving left, Maguire stepping toward Álvarez, Grealish slipping Haaland through the gap.
Haaland attacked the box.
Evans couldn’t catch him.
Onana rushed out.
Haaland tried to guide it past him.
Onana threw himself across the angle and got enough on it to keep it out.
Old Trafford reacted like a goal had nearly happened.
Haaland put both hands on his head.
Onana got up shouting.
Demien turned toward him and screamed, "André!"
Onana pounded his chest and pointed for United to reset.
Haaland had two.
Demien had two.
Neither had converted the chance to pull ahead.
