"So... what’s the plan?". Yuri asked as Andrea and Daisy walked up to her. She was sitting cross-legged in the snow while a female soldier carefully wrapped another layer of bandages around her wounds. Yuri’s expression remained calm despite the blood covering her clothes, though the slight tension in her face made it obvious that the injuries were still bothering her.
If the healers could have been taken to the battlefield, they wouldn’t have needed bandages in the first place. Yuri would have been mostly healed by now, and the wounds she had suffered during her fight with the Divine Priest would have been nothing more than memories. Unfortunately, the healers were already being evacuated through the ice caves, and there was no way Andrea could risk bringing them back into the middle of the battlefield.
Andrea sighed lightly as she looked towards the distant Eidolon army.
"We need to improvise a new plan for now. Everything went to shit the moment the Eidolons managed to launch a successful surprise attack on our main fighting force."
The original plan had already been destroyed by the siege weapon. Hundreds of humans and Eidolons had been caught in its path, and the surviving humans were now scattered across the battlefield, trying to reorganize themselves before the Eidolons could launch another attack.
Daisy looked between Yuri and Andrea.
"Mm. Should I leave? I don’t think my position in the camp is high enough for a conversation like this."
Andrea shrugged.
"It’s not, but things have changed. If we don’t find a way to pull off a win today, they might not be a human camp anymore."
"Oh."
The grim truth was difficult for Daisy to swallow. It reminded her why she liked avoiding all these overly serious roles to begin with. She preferred lazing around, doing whatever she wanted and leaving the important decisions to people who actually cared about them. Unfortunately for her, the Tower of Mysteries had other plans.
Yuri looked towards Andrea, waiting for her to continue.
Andrea remained silent for a moment, her eyes fixed on the massive siege weapon standing behind the Eidolon army. The enormous railgun-like weapon was still visible from their position, its massive frame towering above the battlefield while faint energy continued moving through the runes carved across its surface.
They couldn’t allow it to fire again.
The female soldier finished wrapping Yuri’s wounds and tied the bandage tightly before stepping away.
Andrea finally looked at her.
"We need to change how we’re approaching this battle, which is why I brought our little friend here."
Yuri nodded towards Daisy.
Daisy remained floating a short distance above the ground, her body suspended effortlessly as she looked between the two women. She seemed to realize that Andrea had brought her here for a reason, but she wasn’t entirely sure she wanted to find out what it was.
"And what exactly are we supposed to do about that thing?" she asked, pointing towards the massive siege weapon.
Andrea answered in an all too calm manner. "I don’t wanna just destroy it anymore." She turned towards Daisy with a smirk. "We are gonna use it on them."
Daisy’s face remained frozen in place for several seconds. Then she suddenly chuckled. "Good one. Never pegged you as the type to make jokes."
Both Yuri and Andrea remained silent. Their expressions became deadly serious as the seconds passed, and Daisy’s smile slowly disappeared. She looked from one woman to the other, waiting for either of them to laugh and admit they were joking. Neither did.
Daisy’s expression twitched.
"There’s no way." She pointed towards the siege weapon again. "I mean, look at it. It’s literally behind them, protected by an army of its own. And what if they activate the weapon while we’re attacking it? Then we’re all going to die, that’s what. If our army even manages to get past them."
Andrea didn’t seem particularly bothered by Daisy’s panic.
"Who said anything about getting past their army?"
Daisy’s head shot in Andrea’s direction.
...
With Andrea’s command, the human army quickly sorted themselves out and separated into two roughly equal groups. The survivors from the first advance force were distributed between them, while the newly arrived soldiers filled out the remaining ranks. Enzo took one group to the left side of the battlefield, while Ryan led the other towards the opposite flank.
Both Enzo and Ryan received the exact same orders. They were to attack the Eidolons, draw their attention and keep as many of them occupied as possible, but under no circumstances were they to push too deeply into enemy lines.
The request was unusual.
They weren’t being asked to break through the Eidolon army or kill as many of them as possible. They were being told to fight just enough to make themselves a threat, then pull back whenever the Eidolons began surrounding them.
Neither man questioned it.
The orders came from Andrea, and that was enough.
Ryan raised his blood stained hand and looked towards the soldiers gathered behind him. Most of them were still wounded, some barely recovered from the siege weapon’s attack, but they had managed to form a proper fighting force again. Across the battlefield, Enzo’s group was doing the same, his massive centaur body standing at the front of the formation as he tightened his grip around his crooked blade.
Then Ryan looked at Andrea, she was standing alongside Yuri, Daisy and two others. Then Andrea gave him the signal.
"Advance!". His voice was loud enough for all to hear, and almost immediately, the march began.
Andrea turned to Daisy.
"Alright, it’s time".
Daisy shivered.
"Just so we’re clear, my dormant ability, Light feather, can’t actually make you all fly like I do, and I have only ever used it on myself and objects, so I’m not entirely sure how it would affect you all. With that, I would assume everyone is fully aware of the risk?".
The two newcomers raised their hands in unison, but Daisy instantly cut them off.
"Good, now hold hands".
