The ancient ice of the frozen wasteland had stood undisturbed for countless years, but today, it fractured beneath the force of a violent impact. Cracks spread across the frozen ground before the ice suddenly broke apart, sending chunks of it flying as Ryan’s figure shot high into the air.
Below him stood the Eidolon Chief. The massive creature gripped his giant red signature axe tightly in both hands and roared aggressively towards the sky. As the roar echoed across the battlefield, the Chief’s fur began to change, its original colour rapidly darkening until his entire body had become blood red.
"Dormant Ability, Blood Rage."
The runes engraved across the Chief’s axe immediately lit up brilliantly, the red glow spreading across its enormous blade. He swung the weapon upwards, and the air itself seemed to respond to the force behind the attack. The wind raged violently as a curved wave tore through the sky towards Ryan.
But before it could reach him, Ryan’s body suddenly vanished.
The Chief growled aggressively. He knew Ryan wouldn’t remain in one place for long, so he planted one leg firmly behind himself and swung his axe using the full weight of his body. The massive weapon swept around him in a complete three-hundred-and-sixty-degree arc, tearing through the surrounding air with enough force to destroy anything caught within its range.
The Chief wasn’t being overly cautious.
He knew what was coming.
As expected, his vision suddenly disappeared.
For a brief moment, everything around him became completely black, leaving him swinging his axe through empty air. The Chief’s expression didn’t change. Instead, the runes covering his weapon suddenly burned even brighter.
The space around him fractured.
Cracks appeared throughout the air before the entire area suddenly shattered, creating a miniature vacuum around the Chief. The violent force tore through the surrounding space, but the strange distortion only lasted for a moment before the damaged space rapidly began healing itself.
Ryan appeared a considerable distance away.
His heart was beating wildly, and blood dripped from his fist onto the frozen ground below. He stared at his hand for a brief moment before looking back towards the Chief.
That had been close.
If he had reacted even a second later, he would have lost his hand.
The Chief slowly rested his enormous axe against his shoulder. Despite the violent exchange that had just taken place, his expression remained calm, almost satisfied.
"You are a strong opponent, but I still outclass you."
He paused for a moment, his eyes narrowing as he looked directly at Ryan.
"That Dormant Ability of yours..."
The Chief released a deep breath, almost like a satisfied sigh, his expression carrying the strange look of someone complimenting an opponent he had finally found interesting.
He slowly pointed his axe towards Ryan.
"What you’re doing is creating a separate space that belongs solely to you, right?"
The Chief tilted his head slightly before shrugging his shoulders, displaying a level of careless confidence that he probably shouldn’t have been showing against someone like Ryan.
"I’m curious. How do you make me go blind without making direct contact?"
He turned his head fully towards Ryan again, his gaze remaining fixed on him.
"I understand the fact that you can move freely through your own space, but the other effects of that ability of yours..."
The Chief’s grin widened slightly.
"It truly makes one worry."
If the Chief wasn’t going to attack immediately, then Ryan saw no reason why he shouldn’t be afforded a one-minute break from his relentless assault.
"My Dormant Ability is called Blackout. The space-related part of it doesn’t exactly fit the name."
The Chief mused silently for a moment before getting back into his stance. He had already realized that Ryan was struggling to keep up with his attacks, and now he was ready to finish him off.
The massive Eidolon shot forward like a tornado, the force of his movement blasting away the surrounding Eidolons and humans as he closed the distance between them.
Blackout activated.
An invisible force suddenly spread around Ryan, creating a separate space that forcibly disconnected itself from the rest of the world. Within that space, Ryan could move freely, almost as though the surrounding world had become water and he was the only thing capable of moving through it.
But that wasn’t the only effect. Ryan could steal the vision of anyone caught within his space, and he did exactly that.
The Eidolon Chief’s vision suddenly disappeared.
His massive body continued forward, but Ryan was already gone, vanishing completely within the space he had created.
The Chief didn’t lose his momentum. He swung his axe forward with all his might as the runes along its blade activated once more. The independent space cracked violently before shattering apart.
Ryan was forced out of it, but he was already above the Chief. By the time the Chief’s vision returned, Ryan was already descending.
His fist crashed into the back of the Chief’s head.
Ryan’s physical strength was frightening to begin with, but combined with the momentum of his descent, the impact was devastating.
The Eidolon Chief’s massive frame was driven into the ground. The ice shattered beneath him as blood burst from his mouth, and his vision disappeared once again.
Within that darkness, Ryan attacked.
A fist suddenly crashed into the Chief’s side.
The blow came from an impossible angle. Ryan had somehow appeared beside him from within the ice, a fact that the Chief couldn’t comprehend.
But Ryan was once again the master of that space, and his blows weren’t becoming any slower.
The Chief felt one of his ribs crack as the force sent his massive body tunnelling sideways through the ice and snow. He tore through the frozen ground, clearing a wide path as hundreds of low-ranking Eidolons were thrown into the air. Even several unlucky humans were caught in the destruction and sent tumbling away.
But Ryan wasn’t slowing down. He was only becoming more aggressive.
He roared as his fists rained down on the Eidolon Chief, refusing to give him even a moment to recover. Every punch carried everything Ryan had, his fists repeatedly crashing into the Chief’s body as the frozen ground continued breaking apart beneath them.
Ryan could feel the reinforced bones beneath the Chief’s flesh vibrating with every impact, but the damage was minimal at best. The realization only made Ryan hit harder.
The Eidolon Chief clenched his teeth as the pain gradually became unbearable. His body was being battered, then his mouth suddenly opened wide.
The Chief’s neck twisted violently to the side, searching for anything he could reach.
Ryan was too close.
The Chief’s jaws snapped down onto Ryan’s shoulder.
His teeth pierced through the flesh, and before Ryan could react, the Chief yanked him away with tremendous force and threw him far into the distance.
Ryan’s body spun through the air before crashing across the frozen wasteland.
He had been so focused on his relentless assault that he hadn’t even noticed the Chief’s sudden counterattack.
The Chief felt as if his dignity had been trampled upon by a lower life form. The humiliation was almost unbearable, and the moment he managed to get back onto his feet, he released a soul-tearing roar that reverberated across the battlefield.
The sound was so violent that several nearby Eidolons instinctively stopped fighting for a moment, while the humans closest to him felt their bodies tense from the sheer pressure of his rage.
His physical body then began to enlarge. Muscles expanded beneath his fur as his frame continued growing, his shoulders becoming broader and his limbs thicker until he gradually became larger than a story building. The ice beneath his feet cracked under his increasing weight, and the massive axe in his hand suddenly looked much smaller compared to his enormous body.
"I will crush your skull and drink your blood. I will tear your skin from your flesh and grind your bones to dust. So you will be deformed beyond what the God of Death and Carnage would allow, and your soul would forever wander the endless realms of the abyss."
The Eidolon Chief wiped the shameful blood from his mouth and nose, his eyes burning with murderous intent. Then his enormous body shot towards Ryan in the distance, each step causing the frozen ground to tremble beneath him. The distance between them disappeared rapidly, and the moment the Chief got close enough, Ryan’s Dormant Ability activated.
His body vanished.
The Chief’s eyes narrowed, but his axe was already descending.
The massive weapon came crashing down with enough force to tear through the space before it, and the runes engraved across its surface ignited brilliantly. The independent space Ryan had created suddenly cracked apart, fractures spreading through it like broken glass before the entire space shattered completely.
A bloodied human figure was violently thrown out of the broken space and sent flying into the distance.
Ryan gritted his teeth as he struggled to move his arms or even stabilize his body, he shot back like a broken kite and collided with a distant group of Eidolons.
