That explained why the markings on his axe had resembled what was engraved across the skeleton, but it still didn’t explain what the writing inside the book was supposed to be. The markings looked similar enough to have fooled him, yet according to Andrea, they were fundamentally different things.
Andrea reached out and took the Tome of Avarice from Damien’s hands. She carefully examined the symbols covering the page. Her expression remained focused as she traced the patterns with her eyes, seemingly trying to understand the logic behind whatever language had been written inside the ancient tome.
"This is a type of language. They might look similar, but they are not the same."
Damien watched her for a moment before asking the obvious question.
"Can you understand it?"
Andrea paused, then she threw the book back to Damien.
"No, but perhaps Hanna might be able to. She spent most of her time here studying the runes and the dead language of the natives."
Damien caught the book and looked down at it again.
If Hanna could understand the language, then he had already made up his mind about what he was going to do. Once they made it back, he was going to find her and ask her for reading lessons. He wasn’t particularly interested in admitting that he needed them, but there was no point possessing an ancient artifact if he couldn’t even understand what was written inside it.
More importantly, the fact that the Tome of Avarice contained an actual language only made him more curious about what exactly had been sealed inside the book.
"Come on, let’s move. We can’t allow the Chief too much time to recover."
Damien agreed inwardly and followed Andrea as they continued deeper into nowhere, neither of them spoke much as they continued forward, eventually, they finally came across the Chief.
The sight waiting for them immediately made both Damien and Andrea stop.
The Chief was bound tightly by dozens of vines, their thick tendrils wrapped around his body and limbs. They had pierced into his flesh in several places, greedily draining his blood as the glowing plants surrounding them continued to pulse with strange light.
Damien stared at the scene, his expression slowly changing, Andrea’s skin crawled as she looked at the vines feeding on the Chief, they both reevaluated the glowing plants around them.
Perhaps they had been far too quick to assume that everything growing here was harmless.
"You’ve found me," the Chief said. He could barely even focus his pupils on them, his eyes struggling to remain open as his body hung helplessly against the glowing vines. Blood continued flowing from the wounds they had made across his body, disappearing into the strange plants wrapped around him.
Damien looked at him for a few seconds before clicking his tongue in amusement. "You don’t look so good, Chiefty. Perhaps killing you will be doing you a favour."
The Chief’s eyes shifted toward him, his expression difficult to read in his weakened state. "We are bitter enemies. You have no reason to do me such favours."
Andrea’s eyes were as cold as ice. "You’re right. We do not."
She lightly jumped onto his chest before bringing her fist down. The force behind the attack was so powerful that it directly shattered the skull of the Eidolon Chief, his head snapping backward from the impact as his body immediately went limp. The vines wrapped around him violently recoiled before tightening around his corpse again, continuing to feed as though the sudden loss of their host meant nothing.
Finally, the Chief’s reign of terror had come to an end.
Andrea jumped back and landed next to Damien, looking completely unfazed by what she had just done. Damien stared at the corpse for a few seconds before turning toward her, still slightly stunned by how quickly she had decided to end things.
"You couldn’t wait for him to give his villain farewell speech?"
Andrea glanced apathetically at him. "If you care so much, why don’t you bring him back? We could use an Awakened undead."
She wasn’t wrong. An Awakened undead would certainly be useful, especially one as physically powerful as the Chief. Damien had already experienced his strength firsthand, and adding that kind of power to his undead legion would have been a significant advantage.
He approached the corpse anyway, ignoring the glowing vines wrapped around its body. They continued feeding on the Chief, apparently uninterested in Damien. He reached the corpse and placed his palm against the Chief’s body, preparing to use his Dormant ability.
"Ri—"
"Get back."
Andrea launched herself forward and managed to grab Damien before the vines could latch onto him. The instant he began to trigger his Dormant ability, the plants reacted violently.
Their previously passive movements became frantic as the vines twisted around the corpse and snapped toward Damien with surprising speed, almost like animals protecting their territory from an intruder.
Andrea pulled Damien away before the vines could reach him. Her face ended up inches from his, close enough for him to feel her breath against his cheeks.
Damien glanced at the vines still writhing around the Chief before looking back at Andrea, seemingly more surprised by how quickly she had reacted than by the fact that the plants had attacked him.
After a second, Andrea suddenly let him go and allowed him to fall to the ground.
"It looks like we’re gonna have to let this go."
Damien looked back at the Chief’s corpse and the glowing vines surrounding it. They had already returned to their previous behaviour, calmly feeding on the blood as though they hadn’t just tried to attack him.
He considered trying again, but the thought of fighting an entire ecosystem just to raise one corpse wasn’t particularly appealing.
Damien agreed without much argument. "I’m really not in the mood to fight glowing blood-sucking plants".
"Let’s find and kill the Therizon".
Damien wasn’t the least bit reluctant, but he wondered why she wanted to help him get stronger, they weren’t exactly friends, or were they? Damien couldn’t put a label on them.
He certainly wouldn’t help someone else get stronger than he was, Damien took great pride in not being altruistic.
