"Do you know where we’re going?" Damien asked after walking for an unknown amount of time.
They had been moving through the strange underground ecosystem for what felt like far longer than it should have taken.
Andrea walked ahead of him with the confidence of someone who knew exactly where she was going. At least, that was what Damien assumed until he noticed that she had begun looking around far more frequently than before.
Andrea wasn’t entirely sure herself, but there was no way she was admitting that to Damien. She had already spent enough time listening to him question her decisions, and admitting that she had no idea where they were going would only make things worse.
"Yeah, of course. My sense of direction has always been my strong suit."
Damien narrowed his eyes at her back. He didn’t believe her for a second, but before he could say anything, the ground ahead suddenly disappeared.
"We’re walking into a dead end."
Andrea stopped only moments away from falling into another bottomless abyss. She looked down at the empty space beneath her feet before slowly glancing back at Damien. There was barely any ground separating her from the edge, and one careless step would have sent her falling into the darkness below.
"This isn’t a dead end," she said calmly. "It’s just a cliff."
Damien was at a loss for words. He looked past her and stared into the vast nothingness separating them from the other side.
"That definitely looks like a dead end to me."
"Well, your eyesight needs some work. We just need to reroute, and we’ll be on our merry way."
Damien stared at her for a few seconds, wondering whether she genuinely believed what she was saying or had simply decided that admitting they were lost would hurt her pride more than walking around aimlessly.
"Yeah, okay."
He pretended to agree with her logic, though his expression made it obvious that he didn’t. Damien walked closer to the edge and looked across the enormous gap. There was no visible path leading around it, and the opposite side looked ridiculously far away.
"So reroute where exactly? All I see is nothingness in all directions. Our best bet is to jump over."
Andrea clicked her tongue before looking across the gap again.
"Since you suggested it, let’s do it."
Damien slowly turned toward her. "Do what?"
"Jump over."
For a few seconds, Damien simply stared at her. He had already accepted that Andrea could sometimes be strange, but this was beginning to test the limits of his patience. He had been wondering whether she was the sane one between the two of them, yet apparently that assumption had been a mistake.
"We’re never gonna make a jump that far. It’s a kilometer or more. Perhaps if we had Dormant abilities that could let us fly, but between me and my undead legion and you with your Fatal Inkling, I don’t see us taking to the skies anytime soon."
There was no hesitation in his voice. Damien had no intention of testing whether his undead body could survive a fall from that height, and he certainly wasn’t interested in discovering whether Andrea could somehow turn a suicidal jump into an actual strategy.
Andrea looked at him for a moment before a small smirk appeared on her face.
"And here I thought you enjoyed the thrill of adventure. Literally every adventure story involves jumping over or climbing a cliff. This could be your opportunity to become a legend."
Damien’s face turned ugly.
"No, no, Andrea. Don’t do that. Don’t try to motivate me to do something that will lead to my immediate death. You might as well take a pistol and shoot me right now."
Andrea blinked. "No. A pistol can’t kill you. You should have proposed that I use a vestige."
Damien was left slack-jawed by her response.
He had been expecting her to laugh, argue, or at the very least understand that he was joking. Instead, Andrea had somehow managed to take his ridiculous suggestion and turn it into a completely serious discussion about which weapon could actually kill him.
Damien stared at her, wondering how exactly he had gone from questioning her sense of direction to having a conversation about the most efficient way for her to murder him.
"Let’s try going around," Damien proposed.
Andrea really wasn’t having that, so she countered almost instantly. "The Therizon is just beyond this cliff. If we go around, it will escape."
"How are you so sure it’s there? I don’t see anything other than ice boulders as far as the eye could see."
She went silent for a moment before answering. "The Therizon attacked me earlier. I can still sense its general location, but it won’t last long. Once the sense of death I’ve had completely fades, it will be able to get away from us."
Damien had to admit that he didn’t know about that aspect of her Dormant ability. He had assumed Fatal Inkling was limited to whatever information it gave Andrea about impending danger, but apparently there were other effects he hadn’t known about. Although, thinking about it, it sounded more like a by-product of her Fatal Inkling, similar to how his black miasma was actually a by-product of his undead legion.
The comparison made some sense to him. His undead legion wasn’t simply a collection of corpses he controlled; his ability had developed alongside them, and the black miasma was one of the strange effects that came from that connection. Andrea’s ability seemed to work in a similar way, producing effects that weren’t necessarily obvious from its name.
Damien finally nodded, accepting her explanation. He still wasn’t particularly convinced about their chances of crossing the enormous gap, though. After once more looking down at the bottomless abyss below, he couldn’t help but ask the question that had been bothering him.
"How do you suggest we make it across?"
Andrea turned away from the cliff and looked at Damien like he had just asked the most redundant question imaginable.
