The great day
The date between Emma and Karl was never meant to be simple or not within the terms of reality. This love can take a toll on every genius. After all, they love intensely. Nothing can separate them. This is exciting for them. The thing is, nothing can shift the presence of both. The more you challenge them, the less you get it. Now, this should be why geniuses can get along with each other.
the same experience! Highly intelligent as a knower of the universe and with very good history knowledge but emotionally like an ancient philosopher. Would feel attacked, get defensive, and act confused about everything. I was always mad for calling out his bad behavior (mind you, I never insulted him or disrespected him). This is what Emma may think, but this is just a facade of Karl.
That is to say that no one could ever pretend two siblings carrying the weight of awakened goddesses and rewritten Ragnarök could simply go for coffee without the universe noticing. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the moment when ordinary streets become thresholds.
They chose the old café near Dickinson College, the one with the cracked leather booths and the barista who still remembered Karl as the quiet boy who used to solve physics problems on napkins. Rain tapped the windows like impatient fingers. The air smelled of burnt espresso and wet wool. Emma sat across from him, stirring her tea with the calm ferocity of someone still learning how to carry Asase Ya’s earth, Anat’s war, and Inanna’s starlit descent without cracking the table.
Emma: You’ve been quiet since Helheim. Not the usual quiet. The heavier kind.
Emma in her mind: Honestly, I’m a little intimidated now. His specific area of expertise is something I’ve never been capable of, so I just kind of looked at it as we’re both smart at our own things. Turns out I’m smart at my thing; he’s an insane genius at his. But I remind myself he’s still just a goofy weirdo who likes to snuggle. And his cover letter sucked, so I, as a writer, edited it for him.
Karl smiled faintly, the kind that carried every unfinished piece he had finally brought home.
Karl: I keep thinking about what happens when mercy stops being the exception. When it becomes the default. The underworld is watching. The Jade Emperor’s court is watching. Even Shiva is watching. And I’m just… trying to drink tea without rewriting reality by accident.
Emma laughedshort, sharp, the sound of three goddesses learning how to share one voice.
Emma: You rewrote Ragnarök and you’re worried about the tea.
Before Karl could answer, the bell above the door rang.
She walked in.
Sophia Hirotomi Alpha Chronos.
Red hair like a living flame braided with threads of starlight and quantum foam, falling down her back in impossible symmetry. Her eyes, violet threaded with gold and shifting equations, scanned the café once and locked onto Karl like she had been looking for him across ten thousand timelines. She wore a simple black coat over a white blouse, but the air around her bent slightly, as if reality itself were politely making room for a mind operating at an ALPHA OMEGA EPSILON DELTA degree, a meta-intelligence that didn’t just solve problems but redefined what a problem was allowed to be.
She stopped at their table.
Sophia: Karl Omega Yang. I’ve read every version of you that exists across the probability branches. The one who solved the Hard Problem of Consciousness at fourteen. I’ve noticed that several famous “genius” figures are often described as having turbulent personal lives… Now, I can see why they call you this way. You are beyond everyone. The one who trained mercy for a hundred million years in a room without time. The one who just taught gods how to rest. You’re shorter in person. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the Axis of the Nine Worlds would still look like a boy who once kicked rocks on porch steps.
Karl stared.
Not with shock. With recognition.
The Omega ring on his finger flared once, bright, cold, almost curious.
Karl: Sophia Hirotomi Alpha Chronos. The red-haired girl who maps entire universes before breakfast. The one who dreams in equations that make the Absurdum Core nervous. I… wasn’t expecting you today.
Emma leaned back, eyes narrowing with the combined gaze of three awakened goddesses. The ground beneath the café table trembled faintly: Asase Ya sensing new roots, Anat sensing potential war, and Inanna sensing desire that could rewrite desire itself.
Emma: You know her?
Karl: Not yet. But I will.
Sophia slid into the seat beside Karl without asking. Her presence made the ordinary café feel like the edge of a singularity. The barista dropped a cup. The rain outside stopped mid-fall for half a second before remembering how gravity worked. The thing is, it did not work at first.
Sophia: I came because your mercy is breaking the probability curves. You finished Ragnarök honestly. You walked Helheim and brought every unfinished piece home. You’re making the old gods… optional. That creates ripples. Beautiful, terrifying ripples. I wanted to see the source before the multiverse decides whether to thank you or erase you. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the risk of becoming too complete for the old stories to survive.
She reached across the table and gently touched the back of Karl’s hand. The contact sent visible waves through the air, equations blooming and dissolving like fireflies made of pure math.
Sophia: Your ring. It’s watching me back. Cute. ALPHA OMEGA EPSILON DELTA degree intelligence meets whatever the hell you’ve become. This should be fun.
Emma’s eyes flashed, fertile earth cracking, war fire licking at the edges, starlit revelation narrowing.
Emma: You talk like you already know how this ends. They'll also show a wiseness when it comes to relationships and communities that can provide great new insights to someone that feels different from others around them (because belonging doesn't always come easily) and/or struggles with emotional regulation (simply by being good role models of patience and care). It doesn't matter how high someone's IQ is if they have no EQ, empathy, or affective responsibility—these people can be quite manipulative, insensitive, and overall dangerous to everyone else's mental health since success and their own desires rank higher in their priorities than others'. HAHAH! This is so fucking funny!
Sophia turned to her with genuine respect, the meta-intelligence recognizing another awakened force.
Sophia: No one knows how this ends anymore. That’s the point. Your brother broke the script. I’m here to read the new one while it’s still being written. And maybe… to become part of it.
She looked back at Karl, violet-gold eyes steady.
Sophia: So. Coffee? Or should we skip the ordinary part and discuss how your mercy is about to make both Heaven and Hell nervous?
Karl smiled as small, real, as the smile of a boy who had trained for a hundred million years and still came home to find the story growing larger.
Karl: Coffee first. Then the multiverse. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the honest new beginning doesn’t still need bad coffee and good company.
The rain started again outside.
Inside the small café in Carlisle, three extraordinary beings sat at a scarred wooden table: the sister carrying three goddesses, the brother carrying nine worlds, and the red-haired girl whose mind operated at a level that made reality nervous.
The date between Emma and Karl had become something else entirely.
And the honest new story, as always, refused to stay simple.
FUCK YOU, Karl!
