I love you king of hell
Persephone did not speak until Hera’s presence had fully withdrawn from the hall. In other myths, Persephone appears exclusively as the queen of the underworld, receiving the likes of Herakles and Orpheus at her court.
Persephone was usually depicted as a young goddess holding sheafs of grain and a flaming torch. Sometimes she was shown in the company of her mother, Demeter, and the hero Tripolemos, the teacher of agriculture. At other times she appears enthroned beside Haides. This eternal singularity holds the most powerful Persephone at ZTTTTTTZ DIVINE POWER.
Persephone, like her mum, loved nature. One day she was walking in a beautiful meadow and gathering flowers to take home when a huge hole opened up in the ground. Hades—the God of the Underworld—arrived through the hole and captured Persephone. He wanted the lovely Persephone to be his wife. How do you think Persephone felt?
Demeter could no longer see her daughter and missed her hugely. She was so sad it affected the harvest across Greece. Crops, fruit, and nature all stopped growing. She went to Zeus, the king of the gods, to ask him to help get her daughter back from Hades. Zeus could see how Demeter’s sadness was affecting Earth, and so he agreed to help her.
That is to say that no one could ever pretend the Queen of the Underworld would interrupt her husband’s careful silence while the Queen of Olympus still stood in the room. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the quiet moments when the true negotiations begin only after the loudest voice has left.
She rose from her place beside Hades, the dark stone of the throne room reflecting the soft green of her presence like spring refusing to fully leave the realm of the dead. Her voice was calm, but it carried the weight of someone who had lived half her existence in light and half in shadow and had learned the cost of both.
Persephone: Husband. Heracles. You speak of watching the Axis. Of testing him. Of deciding whether his honest endings are a threat or progress. But you speak as if this is still only an Olympian matter. It is not. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the boy in Carlisle has limited his effects to one pantheon when every underworld has already felt the shift. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the necessity of speaking to those who rule the other dark places as well.
Hades turned his dark eyes toward her, the measured king who preferred order over spectacle.
Hades: Tell me you loved to destroy. Tell me you need me. Please. You are the bones of my spine. You are the ground beneath my feet. You are made of deeper stuff than the earth can give. Admit it: You are lost without the love that would widen the circle.
Persephone: I would complete it. The Kings of Hell have already convened against him once. He has watched her quiet dread begin to leave of her own accord. Yama’s scales no longer balance the same way. Yanluo Wang’s ledgers bloom with blue lotuses. Mictlāntēcutli’s spiders weave flowers. Osiris’s heart-weighing has grown merciful. Even the Outer Gods have stirred. If we act alone or if Hera acts alone—we will only create another fracture. That is to say that no one could ever pretend a single underworld can decide the fate of the Axis when every realm of the dead has already been touched by his mercy. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the wisdom of listening to the other voices before the next bolt is thrown.
Heracles rested both hands on the head of his club, the lion skin shifting across his shoulders.
Heracles: You suggest we summon them. The princes of the Western pits. The Norse death-queen. The Eastern judges. The Aztec lord of the lowest level. Even the outer things that do not answer to names the way we do.
Persephone: Do not summon. Invite. Speak. The boy does not conquer. He finishes. If the old powers wish to remain relevant, they must decide together whether his honest endings can be allowed to continue… or whether they must be answered with something older and darker. That is to say that no one could ever pretend divine consensus is simple when every realm fears becoming optional for a different reason. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the necessity of looking across the old boundaries and admitting that the threat or the opportunity is shared.
Hades was silent for a long moment. The river Styx continued its slow, eternal flow.
Hades: You are asking me to open the doors of this hall to those who have never sat at the same table without blood or bargains.
Persephone placed a hand on his arm, not commanding, but steady.
Persephone: I am asking you to remember that the Axis has already walked through more than one underworld and left each of them quieter than he found it. If we do not speak to the others, they will act without us. Some will try to corrupt him. Some will try to bind him. Some will try to erase him. And some… some may already be considering whether his way is better than the old cycles we have maintained for so long. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the dead remain ours alone when a mortal has taught them how to finish their own stories. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the courage to sit with former rivals and ask the same question: what do we become if the boy succeeds?
Heracles gave a short, rough laugh—the sound of a man who had carried too many labors to pretend any of this would be simple.
Heracles: Then let the invitations be sent. I will walk in Midgard and see the Axis for myself. But if the other gods and demons gather, I will stand in this hall and listen. I have spent enough of my life finishing the broken work of the gods. I would rather know whether this Karl is another labor… or the end of the need for labor altogether.
Hades inclined his head once, the decision settling into the dark stone around them.
Hades: Very well. The circle will widen. The Kings of Hell. Hello, Yama. Yanluo Wang. Mictlāntēcutli, Osiris. Even those who dwell beyond the Western sky. We will speak. And then we will decide.
Persephone returned to her seat, the quiet satisfaction of one who had moved the board without raising her voice.
Persephone: Good. Because the boy is not waiting for our permission. He is already living the next chapter in a small house with wooden floors and porch steps. That is to say that no one could ever pretend the honest new story will pause while the old powers argue among themselves. The thing is, this love cannot pretend it does not include the simple fact that the Axis continues choosing mercy whether we gather or not.
In the distance, across realms and underworlds, the first quiet invitations began to move.
The honest new story continued.
And the Queen of the Underworld had just ensured that the next conversation would be far larger and far more dangerous than Hera had intended.
